UCLA Basketball Camp

First of all, let me say our campus is easily the best looking in the country.  The women - the buildings - the architecture - the national titles - etc. just made me proud as ever to be a Bruin.

Now the entire freshmen class is on campus.  I saw the group taking a group photo in UCLA polos together.  Let me say this class is a major brick in the foundation Howland is building for a national title run.  Ryan Wright is a legit 6'8-6'9 stud.  The guy dunks and dunks and dunks.  He's so athletic on the block and has nice moves.  He will provide the most impact for us this season from the freshman class.

Alfred Aboya is going to be known as our warrior.  At 6'7, he was showing Fey with only one practice how to rebound a basketball with authority.  His offensive game needs work, but he will give us a lot this year on defense and rebounding.  He will be a major spark plug.  A side note on Alfred is my interraction with him today.  I let Alfred and Luc know we were going to be the "Cameroon Crazies" this year.  He was shocked to know that I even knew of him as a student, and then that he was from Cameroon.  I let him know the entire campus has been awaiting he, Luc, and Wright especially to shore up our frontline.  Wright let me know his love for Canada as well.  I also let our bigs know they need to show Fey how to dunk, rebound, and play defense.  They smiled and said, "you're going to see a lot of dunks this year."

Darren Collison - he has an ugly shot, but it goes in a lot.  Jordan Farmar and Shipp were laughing and poking fun of his form, but if it aint broke don't fix it.  He's going to really push Jordan this year in practice and for minutes.

Jordan, who looks much bigger than last year, needs to focus on turnovers and defense or else he will lose more minutes than he thinks.  With rumors swirling that he's thinking of going to the NBA, all we need to mention to him is his fellow McDonalds All-American from 2003, Randolph Morris, who left early and went undrafted.  Stay in school Jordan or else you could end up like 6 SEC stars who left early and went undrafted.

Now the biggest surprise to me of the afternoon was Lorenzo Mata's jump shot.  Yes, Lorenzo has a jump shot that was really good.  He suddenly has a jumper with great form and it went in over and over again.  Lorenzo could see some time at the 4 if this jumper is here to stay.  Oh, and Lorenzo showed his athleticism with an amazing dunk that won a dunk contest during the day.

Roll is Roll.  He and Afflalo have our 2G position set for the next four years.

Luc Mbah Moute could be a redshirt candidate.  His shot is ugly and it rarely goes in.  He's a fantastic athlete but with Cedric and Shipp at the 3, it might be best to redshirt him this year.

And last but not least, James Keefe would start at the 4 for UCLA this year.  He is THAT good.  He is physically ready and is just too good on both sides of the court.  If he has room for improvement is his offensive game.  He needs to hit his J more frequently, but thats all I can really knock him on.  He's going to be the most important recruit of the class, regardless if we sign Budinger.
