UCLA Basketball Recruiting Notes

Lifted from the diaries on the right. Joe scooped everyone on the internets including paid premium sites re. the Buddinger info. So we are going to pay close attention to what he has to say re. Bruins hoops. Remember ... paid premium sites are not the only source of info./thoughts/analysis when it comest o Bruin sports info. Blogs like ours will continue to grow, and we don't need to shill/spin for an athletic department to protect much cherished press passes either. - Nestor.

So now everyone has confirmation that Budinger will be going to Arizona, and thus we must look elsewhere for a 2nd member of the 2006 class.  To me, there wasn't much of an urge to get a wing in this class, unless an elite one simply fell into our lap (which almost happened, obviously) and for that I'm not concerned about losing out on this recruit.  As most here know, Mike Roll is going to be terrific, and he's still stuck behind Josh Shipp for at least the next two years, throw in Luc, and its a nice problem to have.

We should've been looking at getting a 1 or a 2, in my opinion.  Farmar may jump after this year, and then we are stuck with Collison (who will be very good, but can't play 40 minutes a night) until either Drew Jr. or Jennings (grades) comes in 2008.  We are going to need another ballhandler badly if Jordan leaves us high and dry.  I also feel as though recruiting a SG would've been more beneficial than going after a 3, a spot where we are pretty well stacked for a while.  Afflalo isn't staying 4 years, and while Roll can fill in at the 2, I'd like a little more security there.

So what are we doing?  Going after Deon Thompson, which is fine, I think he's going to be a productive college player, but we've already got Mata, Aboya and Wright as young players with very good potential at Thompson's spots on the floor.  Like I said, its a nice problem to have, but I firmly believe that if we aren't going after a high quality PG, we should be saving scholarships for 2007...Period.
