Yesterday we had Orson (Every Day Should Be Saturday) and Peter (Burnt Orange Nation). Today we get Benny and Yost from the M Zone, one of the most entertaining sports sites around the internets (not just the blogosphere). Benny and Yost are two genuinely good guys who are as addicted to their Wolverines as we are to our Bruins. Give them a warm welcome as they drop by to wish us good luck against our enemies in Red. GO BRUINS. -N
Some of the biggest Bruin fans in the country this weekend don't reside in Westwood or even California for that matter. They never went to UCLA and probably can't name many players on the team. Hell, they might not even have a strong opinion one way or the other about Karl Dorrell.
But they'll be cheering like crazy for the True Blue and Gold against their crosstown rivals from USC on Saturday. They'll be singing the school's fight <s>song</s> songs at the top of their lungs. They'll be on the edge of their seats with each play. And these "Bandwagon Bruins" will all be Michigan fans.
Why? Because a UCLA victory could put Michigan in the BCS title game. So we at the MZone - and Wolverines everywhere - are latching on to your great rivalry for selfish reasons this weekend.
Now, we trust dyed-in-the-wool Bruins fans understand. We'd expect nothing less if the roles were reversed. Such fleeting college football "fanbases of convenience" in the BCS age - where championships are decided by so many more factors than Xs and Os - are as much a part of the game as tailgating.
Hell, last week Michigan fans actually had to cheer for Notre Dame. Thankfully, the bond between the Irish and Wolverines lasted about as long as that of a computer programmer with an expense account and Vegas hooker during Comdex. But even for a few hours, it was painful. It left scars. To put having to do this in a way the UCLA faithful can appreciate, it was akin to Bruin fans cheering for the return of Bob Toledo.
Luckily, in terms of this weekend, I've always liked UCLA. So cheering for them is easy. And no matter what the reasons that have brought our schools' destinies together, I only wish we Wolverines could offer some sort of tangible help in leading you to victory in your big game against your hated conference rival.
Unfortunately, like you of late, we've, uh, had a little bit of trouble leading ourselves to victory in our big game against our hated conference rival. So I'm afraid any suggestions might not do much good. In fact, we'll take some advice ourselves if you have any.
So we'll just leave you with a "Go Bruins!" Kick some ass this weekend.
And please don't be upset if we're not here Sunday morning. Like a drunken fling during Spring Break in Cancun, we both knew this week was going to end. And no matter what happens down the road, we'll always have Saturday. But we'll definitely call again if you win. No really. Promise.
