ESPN just compiled a report based on the last 5 years of the Sagarin Ratings to determine the best football/basketball combo schools in the nation. Texas, Florida, and LSU are 1, 2, and 3. UCLA checks in at #26. Quick, guess why we're rated so low (relative to our expectations). Done guessing? You're wrong. We're ranked the 22nd best football school in the last 5 years, and the 42nd best basketball school. Haha, WHAT? Man, the damage Lavin has done. For some perspective, here are the 5 schools that are ranked above and below in basketball:
- Oregon
- Washington
- UAB
- Michigan
- Clemson
- UCLA
- Iowa
- Vanderbilt
- Virginia
- Arkansas
- Missouri
It makes sense now that I think about it, we only really turned a corner last year, but wow that was a shocker. If we had Howland for the last 7 years, we'd be ranked around 3rd or 4th overall for sure. Well, at least we're ranked 2 spots higher than sc, despite their #1 football rating (they're #65 in basketball). This also flies in the face of those who say we're just a basketball school.
