Fellins No More

Fellins No More
The play of RH this year has been remarkable, especially the second half of the season.  Without him, I don't think we get that win at Cal and the outright Pac-10 championship. The Bama game would have been tough without him as well.  RH is shooting over 70% since the disaster at SC (mostly dunks). The guy has stepped up his play with good defense and gives us a presence inside. He's playing with energy and heart in his senior year. I don't think it's fair to lump him with Fey (to create Fellins) anymore. Fey has done nothing for the team this year - I don't think it's all his fault though - he just doesn't have the athleticism or energy to play with this Bruin squad. So I'm calling for the death of Fellins and the emergence of RH as his own entity - sorry MF you're now on your own. We will need RH to continue his consistent and high level of play for any hope at the final four (or better yet banner #12).
Go Bruins - 2 down and 4 to go for #12

Ryan Hollins
Ryan has quietly been one of the main stories of this season.  I had a good seat for the 'Bama game and Belmont game.  This kids played his arse off on both ends of the floor.  He will never be the most coordinated big, but somehow along the way he has learned to leverage his big frame, be active without being out of control, and play exceptionally good defense.  Moreover, he has become a leader on the floor.  Our perimeter players finally seem to have enough confidence to throw the ball inside to him.  I would love to see us run a little high/low with Luc at the free throw line area looking to dump it down to Ryan sealing off his man.

Anyway, I don't think we are here right now without Ryan Hollins.  Never thought I would be typing out those words.

ryan
I was behind the basket when we were on defense and I noticed that ryan got burned at least 3 times (leading to 3 dunks early in the game) when he went to double team a guy in the paint because he didnt keep track of the man he freed up.  I agree with everything being said about ryan lately, but I think his defense wasnt so great against alabama, at least in the first half.

Yeah
I said something similar earlier.  I noticed at the beginning of the game, our interior help defense was non-existent.  Alabama kept going right at the basket, and Hollins was nowhere in sight.  I think their big guy kept coming out of the paint and Hollins would be pulled away from that area.  I'm not sure about all the defensive rotations, but whoever was supposed to be there at the beginning of the game was not.

They definitely did a better job of stepping that up towards the middle of the first half, and throughout the rest of the game.

Hollins always seemed to be high energy...
He just needed to learn to control it as well as learn some of the simple fundamentals.  He has had a bit of a raw deal all these years.  A crap "coach" to start.  Then learning a new system that wasn't all about being athletic.  Then he quits the high jumping and was going to bulk up only to need an operation that hurt his Junior year and he couldn't get bigger.  Now he is a senior with 2-2.5 years of REAL playing time and 3 years of coaching.  This kid has shown he has a lot that was untapped, and it is a shame we/he won't get to see that with another year.

It's too bad
that he and Cedric couldn't get some sort of "sympathy redshirt" for having crappy coaching at the beginning of their college careers.  Just think: Cedric would have 2 more years and Hollins would have 1 more!
