Coach K = Wooden?

From the diaries. Just one more add. Coach Wooden coached at an athletic chapel shrined with NCAA championships, the Chevy Salesman coaches at an athletic institution that has turned into USC of the East (a thug school). GO BRUINS -Nestor

I know many people have seen the asinine story comparing Coach Krackheadski's run of Sweet 16s to that of Coach Wooden's championships, and today in the LA Times, Chris Dufresne writes about how people (east of the Rockies, that is) tend to forget and understate Coach Wooden's achievements.

Among other things, he talks about people comparing Duke to Wooden's UCLA teams:

Last year, before Michigan State played Duke in the Austin Regional, Spartan Coach Tom Izzo was asked to compare Wooden's 12-year run to Krzyzewski's success.

"UCLA was awfully good," Izzo said at the time. "When you look at this modern-day era with the parity being so much better, it is more incredible what Mike has done there."

More incredible.

Wooden's record in the Final Four was 21-3.

Krzyzewski is 10-7.

Dean Smith was 8-11.

Wooden was 10-0 in title games; Krzyzewski is 3-4.

Let's get a grip.

It's a pretty good read, and still leaves me awestruck to read about all of this, even though I have heard it all so many times before.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Katz or Boeheim?
I thought it was Andy Katz of ESPN who was the idiot who tried to compare Coach K's Sweet Sixteens to John Wooden's 10 titles. I don't remember hearing or seeing Boeheim speaking about this issue.

Boeheim
basically echoed Katz's sentiment in Katz's article.

Tom Hansen - Pac-10's Commissioner
Tom Hansen has this quote in the article you linked above:
"It's absurd to say getting to the Sweet 16 equates to winning a national title," said Pacific 10 Commissioner Tom Hansen, who witnessed UCLA's budding dynasty as the conference's public relations director from 1960 to '67. "There's no question Duke's record of the past 15 years is impressive, but how many national championships have they won? Three doesn't equal 10."
What is really absurd to me is that Hansen waited this long to get that quote out. How hard it was to pen together those sentences and send out a quick, biting, rapid response press release from the Pac-10 office to every single media outelts accross the country.

What Tom Hansen and Marc Dellins (UCLA's PR Director) are so pathetic is playing the PR game. These guys are bunch of lazy dickweeds sitting on their fat assesses waiting for Chris Duffresene's of the world to come save the day.

It is apparent the East Coast media establishment will never care for UCLA. That is why the UCLA and the West Coast sporst establishment have to be aggressive with their media marketing, getting their message out.

I shudder to think what we would all be doing if we didn't have outlets like blogs and message boards to voice our collective frustrations on how our Bruins have been covered.

We are being let down by the staff in Morgan Center and the Pac-10 office.

Coach K VS Wooden
If the logic that Katz/Boehim used is rational thinking, then we should have kept Lavin, he made several sweet 16's and little did we know that was a mark of greatness.

I think we should take a collective sigh and remember this:

Rectal craneal inversion is curable only if you know you have it. The East Coast "experts do qualify under this parameter.

A must read article
I wonder what that whiny Zona bitch will have to say about this para:
Arizona, in 1997, won the NCAA title after finishing fifth in the Pacific 10, and none of the Final Four schools in 1989 -- Duke, Seton Hall, Michigan and Illinois -- won their conference or tournament titles.
Michigan won it all that year beating Seton Hall in the championship game if I can remember correctly. I don't remember any of the East Cast assclowns complaining about how Michigan was not the best team in the country.

ROFL...
As expected, JJ Reddick is named AP player of the year. Sure he put up some big numbers, but please, 3 of 17 against LSU when the money's on the table. We're looking at a poor man's Steve Kerr here...

Makes about as much sense as Roy Williams being named coach of the year. Howland gets 1 vote, John Calipari gets 2 votes. Go figure. Bias? What Bias??

GO BRUINS!

COY...
votes are placed before the tournament that's why Coach Howland didn't receive more than one vote.

by SOCOM on Mar 31, 2006 10:18 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

No, it's BIAS, pure and simple...
Even based on the regular season alone, Howland should have earned more than one vote. He orchestrated one of the single most dramatic turnarounds of a program ever, with a group of young, often injured players, and without his best offensive player, Josh Shipp...

Coach Howland didn't receive more than one vote because the voters themselves were heavily biased towards the Big East, Big-10, ACC, SEC.

Ratface = Wooden on a cold day in hell
Never that!

Ratfaceis one of the biggest underachievers of the 90s and 00s.  I mean really, for all the hype that Puke gets on a yearly basis, it sure as hell hasn't translated into titles.

PS: Upset losses to craptastic teams like Kent State in the Sweet 16 led to Lavin getting fired.  Ratface should get that memo.
