The Quest for Banner # 12: UCLA v. UF NCAA National Championship Game Open Thread

I can't believe I just wrote that title.

It still has not completely sunk in yet. Regardless, the Bruins are back. We can talk about our superstitions, funny pictures, mojo, and all of the other fun we've been posting during this fabulous run. However, the most comforting thought is that our beloved UCLA basketball program is in great hands, and, regardless of what happens tonight, the Bruins are back for good. Make no mistake though, the Nation wants ONE MORE WIN!

With that said, let's not take any chances:

Star-divide

Let's go with what got us here.

don't post anything about your superstitions until after the game!  If people find out about them, they won't come true!

of course, I guess that means I am superstitious about superstitions...

Yeah, baby, yeah!  I'll post my superstitioins after the game, but I do know that me watching an uninterupted UCLA tournament game will not hurt them (I found that out on Saturday).

Great article
about our superb assistant coaching staff in the Daily Bruin.

Just another reason I think we will be prepared tonight to make a run for #12. I wish we could lock all of these guys up in multi-year contracts.

Today is the anniversary of Howland's hiring.

Not just Howland's Hiring
It's also exactly 11 years to the day since we last won, and I believe exactly six years to the day that Florida lost in the championship game.

My stomach is in knots.  I don't think I have ever been this nervous about a sporting event.  Even in 1995, I wasn't as nervous/anxious as today.  I envy those of you on the West Coast, because you probably had 2 less hours to think about this today...

Win or lose, I love these guys.

Nantz/Packer
Theyre all over Noah's nuts. We need to make our gimme shots.

by BuckFitty on Apr 3, 2006 7:15 PM PDT reply actions

I hate Noah
He's got 5 blocks at the half!!!  We keep getting stripped from behind.  We're missing layups and putbacks.  AA didn't bother to come out of the locker room.  This is so frustrating!  That said, at least we are a second half team.  Let's stir up some good 2nd half karma!

by chaphill1 on Apr 3, 2006 7:20 PM PDT reply actions

is it just me or...
is Noah allowed to smack hands when he gets his blocks.  I saw some clean ones but I also saw a few where his whole arm smacked hand.  Grrrr

GO BRUINS
I don't care that we lost this year. The Bruins brought back something this year that can't be defined by one loss. Coach Howland brought respect and class back to the program. We're gonna be in many more championship games in the near future.

by BuckFitty on Apr 3, 2006 8:40 PM PDT reply actions

congrats to Florida
They were definitely the better team out there, and there's no shame in losing to a better team. Our Bruins are something special, and Howland has rejuvenated the program. Next year we have Josh Shipp and new recruits and hopefully most of the current guys will stay put to finish what they started.

by njbruin on Apr 3, 2006 8:44 PM PDT reply actions

I'm not going to lie
I'm disappointed.

But unfortunately, Florida was too much for us to handle.  Next year, we are going to  be older and more consistent.

Florida's tempo
We played their game.  But like others have said, there is no shame in losing to a better team.  Florida was better tonight, and they made us take bad shots, just like we did to all the teams we faced before.  Congrats to Florida, and I hope we can make this run again next year, and finish the job.

I'm disapppointed
But only because when you get that far, you want to have the whole thing.  But I promised myself to keep grounded and remind myself that we were playing with house money.

When JShipp went down, I'll admit that the doubt crept into my mind, but today I am still one satisfied Bruin fan.

Next year...
We will come back hungrier and better prepared.

Props to Florida, clearly the more athletic team tonight, and the team that wanted it more...

We'll be back.

Too bad Bruins...
Look at the bright side though, you still have Coach Howland. He made UCLA a national power in only three years! Imagine what what he's capable of with even MORE time. I may be smiling right now but you guys shouldn't be frowning. Keep your heads up.

by Trojan1880 on Apr 3, 2006 8:55 PM PDT reply actions

I ALMOST know how it feels to be a trOJan
Well, except for the fact that we were unanimously picked against and overacheived instead of underacheived in playing in the big game.

by scittles on Apr 3, 2006 9:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't even get me started
Maybe Howland should have substituted some 1960's banners for the starting lineup. I was sick of hearing about what happened 50 years ago for Christ's sake. You know what else I was sick of hearing...UCLA's supposed lock-down defense. Joakim Noah officially made Hollins his own personal bitch, while Afflalo laid an egg in the biggest game of his life. The entire UCLA bench played no better than my 11 year old brother's YMCA team. Can anyone say overrated !!! UCLA is a perfect example of a Cinderella team that celebrated Cinderella type wins to reach this point (ex. The Gonzaga game).I was not impressed the least by UCLA, considering their win over more overrated LSU.

Don't even get me started on Howland, the guy looks like he never even coached a game in his life, much less like a coach of the millenium candidate. Wooden could have risen from his wheelchair and coached a better game. I think this game reflects the light years UCLA has to go before they even think of raising another banner. So while the panzies in Westwood talk about the future, I will sip some champagne and enjoy this assraping.

Where did this asswipe come from? Instead of celebrating his team's victory with class, he comes scouring through Bruin messageboards to give us a cheapshot when we're down. Florida played great tonight, and we didn't, simple as that. No need to come on our turf and shove it down our throat. Funny, i just get the same type of vibe from Joakim Noah. He's a great player, and had an outstanding tournament, but something about blowing kisses during the game and giving little smirks at the opposing team shows a lot about his character. Gator16, your school won your first basketball title ever, go celebrate with class. Dont come in here like some shitface trying to start trouble.

You bring classless to a whole new level.  And, if you were going to gloat, you'd think you'd try to at least make some small amount of sense.  But, oh no, you decide to just demonstrate how big of a retard you are.  So, I hope it was fun, but you may now kindly make your way back to the short bus and take your sorry ass home.

What is the deal with uclawarren?  Are u a bruin fan or a texas fan?  Are u just a usc hater that jumped on the texas bandwagon since your own pathetic school couldn't keep leinart and bush under 70?  Bitch!!  At least usc earned their way to the title game and went down fighting.  Whereas ucla got lucky and clearly didn't belong on the same court as Billy Donovan, Joakim Noah and Co.  Florida doesn't lose by 80 points to Florida State, we compete against our rivals asshole!!!

I love the fact
that after Florida won, you are sitting at home (most likely allowing your 11 year-old brother to moisten up your dry, scaly cock) and getting on the internet to talk shit to UCLA fans.  I guess celebrating national championships is a new experience to you, so you have no idea how to react.  I'm guessing you're not a real Florida fan, just some teenage loser whose parents won't let him out of the house.

If we had won, we would be out celebrating.  Your idea of celebrating is getting on the internet to talk shit.

Congratulations on your 1 cute little banner. The stars aligned for the Gators this season. Now let the countdown begin for Horford and Noah to declare for the NBA, and for UF to return to their rightful place in the world of college basketball--somewhere in the middle of the SEC.

By the way, does UF really have a major called Leisure Management Studies?
