OJ Mayo

Seriously now...something is seriously wrong when an elite hoops prospect like OJ Mayo is giving real consideration to the University of South Central.  And I sure as hell don't buy the "I want to play for a coach with NBA experience" because Tim Floyd was about as successful in the NBA as Rick Pitino was in Boston.

The truth probably goes something more like this: "I'm OJ Mayo and now that there is a 19 year-old age requirement in the NBA, I might as well go play my one year in college for a school corrupt enough to pay me an NBA salary for the year."  In that case, $C looks like a perfect match.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Bring Mayo and Walker to SUC
We want to be challenged.  We want to make sure that the team never plays to the level of the competition as we saw the Bruins do in the second meeting against SUC.

hmm
it would be nice to have a rivalry in bball with them, then again it would be nice if we could rival them in football :S

Fear Floyd
You should all be very concerned about Mayo and Walker over at SC, especially if Kevin Love goes to North Carolina like I think he's going to.  Their team could easily be better than UCLA's in a couple of years.

by Bruin Roar on Jun 30, 2006 3:24 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Uh no ...
UCLA has played Floyd many times while he was building a program in Iowa State. He is not all that.

And let's not be such wusses when it comes to the recruiting battle with UNC.

by Nestor on Jun 30, 2006 5:25 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

And another thing
I'm not an SC fan, but I think it's pretty classless to make accusations that have no basis in reality.  Unless something about it comes up, I strongly doubt Floyd or SC would pay anybody just like that.

You haven't been around much Roar
given SC's track record there is nothing classless about Sacto's post.

Yeah O J Mayo
is going to SuC because they have such a great basketball tradition and must because Floyd is a championship coach.

by bluestreet on Jun 30, 2006 6:06 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bring it on
I think that an OJ Mayo to SUC would be good for the Pac-10 and UCLA. There would be a lot of hype coming from our games and a lot more potential recurits would look to the pac-10. I would think that OJ coming to SUC would give us an edge in landing KLove. Seeing that he enjoys competition and he would get to face him head on, if not man-o-mano. I say bring on OJ and lets roll!!!

Yeap
that is exactly way to look at it.

Although I would love our football program to be catching up with their football program before seeing SC becoming too much of a factor.

Thanks to incompetence of Karl Dorrell our football program is irrelevant at this point of time.

UCLA takes on all comers
Mayo or not, the SCumbags will succumb to the suffocating style of Howlandball once again.  You're telling me we should be scared of a team that is coached by Dim floyd and couldn't make the NIT last year?  Not likely.

by scittles on Jun 30, 2006 8:28 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

UCLA BB
Let all other schools (scumbags included) worry about us, not the other way around.

There is probably a good reason Howland hasn't offered a scholarship to Mayo.

Mayo
Yes, Arty, I suspect that OJ Mayo is probably not the type of player Howland is looking to fill his roster with.  Now, this is total speculation on my part, because I don't know anything about Mayo's personality, but I would guess that he is not a team-first type of player, given his superstardom (as a high school player).  Furthermore, it is pretty clear that OJ is going to college next year because he has to (NBA age minimum) and as a result, is only biding his time before he can declare for the draft.  As such, his motivation is going to be to put on a show for the NBA scouts, and not so much to contribute to the development of a championship team.  That is not the kind of player that BH is bringing to Westwood.

Superstar
I agree with your point totally. Not every coach jumps to get the superstar. The good/great coaches want the player that will fit best in their system.

OJ Mayo is over rated
and a thug. Let him go to 'SC. He'll only stay one year after we sweep them. Playing us will be good for him, because he'll get a taste of what it's like to play against NBA talent. He'll get used to getting owned by AA, LRMAM, AA2, DC, and all the rest.

Why May is going to USC
it's nothing more than the result of the new one-year requirement rule.  He can't go to the NBA until he is 19.  So he has a year to kill.

If you had a year to kill, how would you do it?

It looks like he doesn't want to hang out in Lawrence or Chapel Hill.

Nor does he want to have to go somewhere where he will have to work hard.

Instead, he can go to USC, be the man and be in a media spotlight as a precursor before jumping to the NBA.  With his name being 'OJ', he will get an incredible amount of pub if he goes to USC.  And being in LA, he will be near Kobe his idol and all the Hollywood stuff he probably wants to be around one day.

Plus, his high school team was the Trojans.  And it's likely the likable Floyd has done a good job of selling USC to him.

Seems like a pretty simple explanation.

by Heismanpundit on Jul 2, 2006 1:46 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Simple explanation ...
He doesn't want to "hang out" in Lawrence or Chapel Hill because Self and Williams want nothing to do with a player with so much baggage.

USC seems to be the only option for him because only USC is desperate enough to take any elite player that no one else is interested in.

Yes ... a kid who wants to get pub because he shares the same name as one of the notorious double muderer in our nation's history.

Simple explanation only in the mind of a proven Trojan shill.

by bluestreet on Jul 2, 2006 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well
Did you know that North Carolina, as well as pretty much everyone else, has offered him a scholie?

No one else is interested in him?  You must be kidding, right?  He will be the first pick in the NBA draft in 2008.  The real truth is that he isn't interested in them.

by Heismanpundit on Jul 2, 2006 3:11 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Well ..
I am not going to speak for Blue. But I do follow college basketball recruiting as religously as anyone online, and I am aware who has "offered" OJ.

If you were actually connected to the recruiting scene in Southern California, you wouldn't sound so naive and out of touch about this specific case.

We appreciate your input on this matter as Trojan Honk. Thanks for that. Now if you want to start your patented pissing match, take it somewhere else.

We got your Trojan spin. And you heard our take. Now let it go and get back to obsessing about an award no one else really cares about this time of the year.

Happy 4th.

by Nestor on Jul 2, 2006 3:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The only take...
...i heard was that he was being illegally recruited or something.

I wasn't trying to spin anything, but was trying to figure out what the allure of going to USC would hold for him.

My response was to bluestreet, who claimed that certain schools want nothing to do with Mayo.

If you are so connected to the SoCal recruiting scene, then by all means let's hear why you think he is considering USC.  I'd be interested in hearing it.

As for being connected to basketball recruiting, I was at the UCLA advanced skills camp, hanging out with Frank Burlison and some scouts.  Were you there?

The one everyone was talking about was Jrue Holiday of Campbell Hall.  I thought Keefe looked good, but I was disappointed that Love didn't play.  Woulda liked to see him.

by Heismanpundit on Jul 2, 2006 8:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Uh ...
I am aware of what went on the UCLA basketball camp.

I don't feel the need to share the wisdom and act like a know it all asshole on a thread dealing with questionable SC recruit.

Not to mention
this is all stuff that can be picked up by reading the BRO article.  Wow, so either you're someone really important, or some random internet troll that can read an online article and use that information to appear as an insider.  Yeah, we all know it's the latter.  People loved Jrue Holiday?  You don't say!?

Dumbass.

by scittles on Jul 3, 2006 10:46 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who the hell cares?
If he wants to spend a year losing at SUC, then that's his choice.  I'm more interested in kids that have the desire to be winners (Love) rather than those that are chasing after the big bucks.

Heisman Pundit...
Let me make this very clear for you.  Nobody at this site likes you.  Nobody wants you commenting on this board.  You have the right to your opinion, but nobody here wants to read it.  Your columns are poorly written, your prose is best suited for middle schoolers, and your impartiality makes almost every point you make seem like nonsense.  Nobody likes your site, and nobody visits it.

Please stop posting on the Bruins Nation board.  You're not wanted here.

Have a nice day.
