Kelvin Kim Update

For all of those wondering, Kelvin Kim is alive and well. My Intramural BB team squared up against Kim and some of his buddies in the semi-finals of the IM tourney last week. Until now, it's been pretty tough to evaluate Kim based on his ability to stand still while running out the clock. After playing against him, it's safe to say that standing still is his best skill. Imagine Brandon Lloyd, but much shorter, slower, and no range.

Before everyone goes crazy and rushes to his defense, Kim is a decent high school player, and a guy you wouldn't mind having on a pick-up team at the local rec center, but we'd be in trouble if KK ever had to do anything but stand around and dribble. Is that a bit harsh? Yes, but its true. Hey, UCLA would be in trouble if I had to play too.

To KK's defense, his team did win, but only because a guy on my team pulled a Lou Piniella on the ref and got the boot. Classic stuff really, but 4 on 5 wasn't much of a game after that.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Kelvin!
Quit knocking the legend of Kelvin Kim!!:

You are going to give his fans a heart attack based on that kind of report Nars.

PS: we need more of this!

coming to his defense
if I remember correctly, he DID get a D-I scholarship somewhere and decided to walk on at UCLA.  I'm gonna go ahead and take a guess that you and the rest of your team didnt get such an honor? :P

But if you are so much better than Kim, I suggest walking onto the team too, I'd sure as hell do it if I had any skills.

Brandon Loyd
I very much enjoyed the reference to Brandon Loyd (I think he only had one L in his name) in your post Nars.  I don't often hear his name mentioned except in reference to being the other half of the 1995-1996 freshman class wtih Jelani McCoy.  But if we're really going to talk about white guys who can allegedly shoot the lights out of the ball in practice but look completely lost during a game, we should give due credit to Kevin Dempsey in that department.  Am I the only one with fond memories of Dempsey hitting a clutch 3 pointer during garbage time to push the Bruins past 100 points for the game, thus rallying the Pauley crowd into a frenzy for free Whoppers?

Negative on Dempsey!!!
You are not the only one Sacto. Who can forget those unforgettable Dempsey reverse slam dunks during the garbage time when absolutely nothing was on the line.

And if I am not mistaken he was THE WHOPPER BOY who you can count on jacking up 3s that would get us over the Whopper margin.

Oh please...
KK is the Korean Muggsey Bogues!

Really, though, I'm not buying your "update". I doubt the guy could be co-MVP of the South Coast League as a junior, averaging 12 points/5 assists, if he was a poor man's Brandon Lloyd.

I wouldn't judge him based on what you've seen in games or what you saw in one or two IM games.

Look
I didn't say that I was better than KK, just that he wasn't that good! :)

I play with a bunch of Anderson students. Our team has two former college players (Emory and UCSD) and a couple of ex-HS players, me included. We won the IM title in the winter and came in second at a business school invitational (behind Stanford). We're not a total bunch of hacks.

I've played with lots of UCLA guys over the years, and KK wouldn't hold a candle to Brandon Loyd. But that's the reason BL got a scholarship and was a starter for a couple of seasons.

To use some stats from uclabruins.com:

"As a HS senior in 1995, Loyd averaged 22.4 points, 7.1 assists and 5.0 rebounds, while shooting 49.5 from the three-point line and 83.0 from the foul line. Following his senior campaign, Loyd was a two-time (following his senior and junior seasons) Oklahoma and Gatorade Circle of Champions Player of the Year ... Also earned All-State, All-Metro and Dist. VII high school Player of the Year following his senior campaign."

Sorry KK...

Brandon Lloyd
Well according to Harrick's recruiters (that'd be Gottfried, Romar, Holton, and of course Lavo) Lloyd was going to be next "Mark Price" from Oklahoma! Yeah baby.

How dare you!!!!!
The Kelvin Kim you speak of must be an imposter! The truth of the matter is that Howland doesn't want to expose Kelvin to the public. I once saw KK drop kick a basketball from Drake Stadium and it swished inside Pauley's Western hoop on 2 bounces(1 through an open door, the other off a railing at the top of the blue seats). Kelvin has repeatedly dunked from the John & Nell Wooden Court logo in practice. Coach Howland simply doesn't want the game to be unfair. Kelvin can dribble the ball with any single finger, though he prefers the middle one. My favorite KK play is the one where he moves so fast that it appears he disappears.

youre wrong
i know firsthand that Kelvin is at least a decent player and he does have range.  I've known his brother since our Freshman year (im a junior now) and last year when Kelvin was a senior, he would come up often to hang out since he knew he was coming to UCLA.  He played a few times with our IM team and he definitally played well.  He didnt take many shots and passed often as a point guard, however late in the game when the team was down by around 10, he started draining 3s to bring our team back.  Although we lost, it definitally showed his ability.  Granted, okay, yeah its going to take a lot to be a PG at UCLA, but really, im not too worried if Kelvin was our last resort.

Just curious
Is Kelvin Kim becoming the Chuck Norris of the Bruin message boards?  Is he going to be curing cancer with his tears and such?
