Another Half Assed Practice Report

Spent another beautiful afternoon at UCLA today.  This time at Spaulding, enjoying the last 3/4 of today's second session.  As before, if you're looking for hard-hitting analysis from someone who knows all the players numbers and has a hearty background with X's and O's, this may not be all that rewarding for you.  If you want to read some blurbs from a wise-ass, please proceed.

A good portion of the afternoon was spent on special teams.  For the bulk of the day, the OL/DL/QB's were off separately working on various skills, far from my vantage point.  Nothing's quite as exciting as punt blocking, returns and coverage drills, and it was as scintillating as you'd expect.

On the kicking side, Perez put up some boomers, and Medlock looked solid.  Both were far superior than their marginal back ups today.  On the return side, depending upon the situation, Markey, Breazell, Austin, Verner, Ryen Carew and Jeremy McGee got reps (I'm forgetting a couple guys as well).  I was most impressed with Breazell, Austin and Verner, though a lot of the focus was on the blocking schemes so the guys weren't always going full tilt.  Markey also had a little brace on his knee, though it didn't seem to be slowing him down much, if at all.

After that, the LB's and CB/S's split off for some skills work, while the offense worked on the other side of the fields (with the lines still off by themselves).  It's somewhat interesting to see them work on fundamentals, but it's about this time I started looking around.  It's an interesting sort who will spend the day at practice.  An eclectic combination of press, girlfriends, family members, and assorted football junkies.  It's also somewhat amusing to hear people introducing themselves with their BRO aliases.

Anyway, back to practice.  It was passing drills for the last half hour or so.  Despite being named the starter, it didn't look like BO got any more reps than Pat, and Osaar got a fair amount of work too.  Both BO and Pat looked fine, though not spectacular, with perhaps BO having an edge.  His throws just look crisper to me.

Had to leave a bit early, but all in all, it looked like a productive afternoon.  The overall vibe seemed to be pretty good; I'd say workmanlike.  I understand future practices will be closed to the public, so that's it from me until Sept. 2.

GO BRUINS.
