UCLA pride

I've always been a supporter of pure and true school spirit.  I love UCLA and support all BRUINS whether they are our amazing women's water polo players or our not-so-appreciated-this-year offensive line.  Additionally, I think that there is sooo much more to all of this than just a win or a loss.  My buddy Derrick Williams is one of our running backs.  Now, when he goes onto the field, he isn't as succesful as Markey.  However, I still frickin' scream my lungs out for him.  That's what friends are for, right?  Well, I feel the same way about everything which encompasses UCLA.  Thus, through good or bad choices, I am going to support KD and all that he does for our team while he is here.  Win or Lose, I am going to continue supporting our team and being proud of them.  Good or bad performance, I am still going to appreciate the good, acknowledge but forgive the bad, and look forward to next game with confidence and faith.  That's what true dedication to something means to me.  It's easy to fly a banner during a winning season.. but it's only hard to fly a banner during a losing season if your pride is dependent upon your record.  Call me an ignorant optimist.. but I don't feel like I can call myself true blue unless my love for everything Bruin is unconditional.  GO BRUINS!!!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Well Said!
Well said! Who can argue with that?! Even though I may be authoring more critical and constructive comments, I have no problem with such a position. I appreciate it very much. I would argue, as Im sure others would, that I have the same dedication and the same pride. Go Bruins!!

I appreciate your comments
And yes, you definitely have just as much of a right to your opinions as I do to mine.  Heck, if we all had my attitude we'd probably lose a lot more... haha
Everyone was having their say so I just figured that I should throw in my bit, too.

I have a similar attitude.  One thing I've been reading a lot of on other boards is that Ucla fans leave early and don't really support their team.  My family has season tickets at Pauley and we always stay the whole time, but I see several people leave when the game is well in hand.  I really think more fans should stay and support Ucla until the end of the event and they also need to be more vocal like you.  The student section is great, but the rest of Pauley could stand to be louder.  I guess this is a rambling reply, but I praise you for being a true fan.  Los Angeles is full of bandwagoners... Southern Cal has a bunch of people who are of that category and even the current fans, while they support their nationally ranked football team do not support any other sport.  Why?  Because bandwagoners like winners.  Bandwagoners aren't true fans.  Let me provide a glaring example for you.  Ask a Trojan fan who Rob Johnson, Daylon McCutheon, Chad Morton, or RJ Soward are.  I guarantee you that most of them won't know who they are.  Why?  They don't know who they are because they weren't fans back then and/or they don't remember them because they were a losing team.  In the upcoming years when Southern Cal isn't a good football team (see the 90s), watch for their fan base to lose interest.

LA fans...
will always get a bad rap, and UCLA fans aren't much different. Pauley and the Rose Bowl aren't exactly intimidating places to play. Very few sell-outs, not much noise, fans leaving early to avoid traffic. It's sad, and I think it's one of the main factors holding our football program back from getting to the "next level". All you would really need to is attend a game in Austin, TX, Columbus, OH, or Knoxville, TN. Then, go to a game at the Rose Bowl. Unfortunately, the difference is night and day...

Austin, TX
DKR is not exactly an intimidating place to play either. Last time we were there we rolled up 66 points. And despite all their recent success DKR is still not an intimidating venue. From BON front page writers after the OSU game:
Oh, almost forgot. Those of you in the stadium - shame, shame on you. What a miserable effort to intimidate the opponent. Here's a primer for next time - try to make it hard for the opposing offense to run their plays. Stand up and yell like someone whose life depends on it.
and from the same post:
I am still disappointed, so excuse this comment. Maybe we can nickname DKR the Library.
By the way on the topic of being a "loyal fan", it looks like BON is also dealing with some newbie commenters unhappy with constructive criticisms of their coaching staff. So it likes gripe with crticisms of the coaching stuff is not just limited to a good, popular blog like BN. BN is in good company when it is also happening at BON.

Bad example...
perhaps, but the point is, Texas is going to average  about 80K in attendance this year, from a fan-base that lives, eats, and breathes football. We'd be lucky to average 65K in the second largest metropolitan area in the US. I'd also be willing to bet a "quiet" day in Texas, Columus, Baton Rouge, Nebraska, Ann Arbor, etc. is not the same as a "quiet" day in the Rose Bowl. It's not uncommon in the Rose Bowl for the visiting team's fans to make more noise than the home team's.

by norcalbruin95 on Sep 13, 2006 8:39 AM PDT reply actions

True ...
Although I think if our fans got the sense that we have a good coach and a solid team, I don't think we'd any problem averaging more than 65k each year at the home game.

The passion is there. We just need a team we can all believe in.

if this team meet that now accepted treshold of 9 wins/victory of SC, I don't think we have any problem generating excitement at the Rose Bowl next season.

But if this season turns out to be another dud with a deflating loss against SC (moral victory will not do), the apathy will continue.

Yup...
Nothing like winning and believing in your coaching staff/team to get the fans rolling in. Just imagine if we had Charlie Weis, Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, or Butch Davis leading our Bruins. Would also be nice to overhaul our Athletic Department as well, but I won't go into that right now...

20 game win streak
Anybody know what our average attendance was during that time??

by artybruin on Sep 13, 2006 1:20 PM PDT reply actions

1997
we lost two games to open the season, Cal and Tenn if I remember right.  I was going to all those games, but not too many other people if I remember.   Didn't draw 60K until the end of the season, then beat SC at the Mosoleum to get to the Cotton Bowl.   Maybe we beat SC at the Rose Bowl, my memory is blurred and my media book is in the next room

by MOlson on Sep 14, 2006 12:41 AM PDT up reply actions

1997
We beat Southern Cal at the Colosieum.

But I do remember drawing pretty significant sized crowds after that 66-3 over Texas.

We had a packed house for the Washington game at home, and good sized crowd for others.

I have been looking for stats for that 1997 season too. So if anyone can post them, it would be much appreciated.

Another great diary thread.

Keep it up fellas.
