Fired out...
indeed. My doubts about KD were reinforced in a huge way tonight.

Those red zone calls ...
reminded me of the decision to punt on 4th against Southenrn Cal.

Playing not to lose.

Always comes back to bite you in the ass.

Then again what do we know ... we are just cranky alum not happy with "10 win" season.

by Nestor on Sep 23, 2006 7:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I got a reminder of that
in the literal sense, when we were near midfield in the first half and needed less than a foot on fourth down to get a first and we punted it. Ben is a big guy, and the sneak always works with him. I was already seeing flashbacks of that when I saw Perez come onto the field...and unfortunately, the end result was the same, an embarassing loss.

by scittles on Sep 23, 2006 7:32 PM PDT up reply actions

And ..
what about the calls when we got the ball with about a mintue to go in the first half.

Svoboda is a such a freaking joke as a OC play caller its not even funny.

by Nestor on Sep 23, 2006 7:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I can't even get into the playcalling
right now, because just the sheer number of things I wholeheartedly disagreed with would be too much to count.  All I can say is that Cable's offense might have been predictable, but so is Svoboda's, and at least Cable was smart enough to stick with something when it's working.

by scittles on Sep 23, 2006 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions

That pre-half time shit...
had KD's fingerprints all over it.

by Ajax on Sep 23, 2006 8:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Play-calling.
Did we even take a single shot at the end zone on all of our red-zone possessions. Truly sad. Some real killer-instinct there...

I'm pretty sure I've seen some 14 year old kids on Playstation calling a more creative/effective offensive game then what I saw today. Sad, just sad.

Can we officailly change our attention to basketball now??

My wife ...
Not a big football fan.

Even she was asking - honey what's going in. Why the heck are we not throwing the ball when we get closer to those field goal posts?

by Nestor on Sep 23, 2006 7:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Same here
My wife, a big football fan in general, but not a student of the x's and o's, was outraged.  "Why do they keep calling that same play."  "That Bell guy sucks"

I can't disagree.

Dorrell is a fucking loser
And whats a shame is that last year's bullshit 10 win season is going to keep him past this season.

And then we have a faction of UCLA fan base who will pay the loyalty card and a faction of students who have no concept of what is it like to have a good football program.

Bunch of fucking losers.

Fire Dorrell then promote Walker...
Hopefully before the trip to South Bend.

by MarcoTheBruin on Sep 23, 2006 7:34 PM PDT reply actions

May be ...
But I don't wany DeWayne anywhere near the HCing gig after the season either.

I am still not convinced we have a decent D.

by Nestor on Sep 23, 2006 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Defense
I thought the defense played pretty good, but the one play that changed the whole game was that 3rd and 18 play when the Huskies were backed up on the 5 yard line at the end of the first half... to that point they were getting absolutely nothing.

Rodney Van should have known where the first down marker was.  The WR caught the ball at least three yards short of the marker, but Rodney dove at the ball instead.  He could have just pushed him out of bounds and Washington would have had to punt, we would have gotten the ball in good field position and maybe scored and put the game pretty much out of reach.  That was a critical play and if our season falls apart I'll look back on that one in disgust.

by ucla21 on Sep 23, 2006 7:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Defense ...
did give up 29 points in pretty much one half.

Rodney Van had issues but so did lot of other guys. Its the coaches who put them in position to lose.

by Nestor on Sep 23, 2006 8:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I can't blame them too much
They allowed 22 points (they had nothing to do with the last TD) and 254 yards.  Our offense cost us the game considering how many times we were in a position to score touchdowns, and how we couldnt milk the clock whatsoever in the 2nd half.  I can't fault the defensive line, those guys are playing their hearts out.  Linebackers were OK, didn't contain Stanback well enough in the 2nd half.  Corners weren't very good.

by ucla21 on Sep 23, 2006 8:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Defensive backs ...
we are supposed to have the best secondary in the Pac-10 and our DC is a former secondary coach at the pro level. Kind of scray ... don't you think?

Cal will torch us up in Berkeley. As will Oregon. Yikes.

by Nestor on Sep 23, 2006 8:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm worried about Stanford
They have Evan Moore and Mark Bradford.  We SHOULD be able to score 80 on that horrible defense, but if Stanford gives us any trouble at all, the worst team  in the Pac 10 by far... god help us.

by ucla21 on Sep 23, 2006 8:19 PM PDT up reply actions

My thoughts exactly . . .
When Van dove and the UW receiver got the ist down . . . the bad news started flowing.

by TheStick on Sep 23, 2006 10:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Dorrell should take over the play calling.
The defense could have played better, but did a respectable job.

The biggest problem was the play calling.  We were so conservative the defense could just stack the line and stop us.  I think Dorrell should step up and call the plays.  We're very young at every position except WR.  Our coaches need to come through and they didn't tonight.

You need to throw deep once in a while;  not once in 3 games.    Ben Olson could be our big play guy and we need to use him.  I can't remember one pass into the end zone, which is ridiculous.

by MROZE on Sep 24, 2006 7:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Someone should take over the play calling
And, my first choice wouldn't be KD.  I assume he had a hand in the game plan, and for all I know, was calling some of the plays.  Whoever was responsible did an abysmal job.

by Menelaus on Sep 24, 2006 7:54 AM PDT up reply actions

The benefit of Dorrell taking over the playcalling
would be that he would no longer be able to scapegoat the OC's that he put in place. Since this is "his" offense, he should take the helm.

by Ajax on Sep 24, 2006 10:29 AM PDT up reply actions

Lack of a big play WR
Killed us today.  Major hole in our recruiting over the past few years, we don't have a 6'3''+ 210 pounder that can make plays and score touchdowns.  Even without it, there's no excuse for not tossing the ball into the endzone.  Shame on Dorrell/Svoboda for settling for triples and thinking it would be good enough to win against a good opponent on the road.

by ucla21 on Sep 23, 2006 7:39 PM PDT reply actions

Recruiting
Dorrell has had 3 years to get big play talent in here. So no talent excuse will not fly.

Plus we certainly have more talent than Washington and probably the third most talented team in the conference.

by Nestor on Sep 23, 2006 7:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed
It's a shame how a former reciever can't bring in quality recieving talent.  Our highest rated WR recruit stepped up today in pretty much the ONLY situation where he had the chance to make a play.  Why isn't he on the field more?  I know he hasn't been reliable catching the ball, but DeSean Jackson had the dropsies last year too.  He still ended up as Cal's best reciever and now he's got like 8 TD catches in 4 games.

by ucla21 on Sep 23, 2006 7:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Joe Cowan might have helped . . .
but that's the way it goes with injuries.  We DO have some taller receivers, D. Johnson is 6'4 and so is Ketchum, by the way, what's his deal?  Has he even caught a pass this year??  D. Johnson is a true freshman so he gets a break.  Taylor and Everett are 6'1, not bad.  We need some height!!!

by TheStick on Sep 23, 2006 10:34 PM PDT up reply actions

We've got big TE's
that can potentially fill that role with some creative play calling. If you remember, early in the game, we were getting good 10 yard gains from Moya and Paulsen, no reason why they shouldn't be in the picture in the redzone. In fact, I'd be looking at those guys even more considering that Ben has a better cannon than Drew did. The quick TE hit should be bread and butter for us this year, just as the MoDrew screen pass was that for us last year.

by scittles on Sep 23, 2006 7:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe but,
a lot of those long balls were horribly thrown.  5-10 yards past the receiver can't be caught by ANYONE.  The play calling in the Red Zone was horrible, but seeing how Ben threw deep, you have to wonder if the 5 yard slants were the only way to move the ball.

by MOlson on Sep 23, 2006 7:45 PM PDT up reply actions

No everyone should see the light...
Look around the boards, no one is standing by him. Not even his loyal supporters. Nestor and Co. have alrealy figured out that long before us. He does not belong in Div 1A as a head coach.

by justwatching on Sep 23, 2006 7:41 PM PDT reply actions

I want to be charitable
and still think this season is salvagable if we can hold serve at the Rose Bowl, beat ASU on the road, and then beat Southern Cal. But I am having a hard time believing.

That was one of the worst coached game I have ever seen even for a UCLA football game.

by Nestor on Sep 23, 2006 7:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Not feeling very giving
This loss was all about coaching.  At least, this was about coaching about as much as any loss ever is.  I, too, have hope, but it is diminishing....

by Menelaus on Sep 23, 2006 8:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Talent was not the problem today...
It wasn't talent, it was coaching, VERY BAD COACHING.

Why are we running the ball on 1st and 2nd down when we are down by 10 points in the 4rth quarter with less than 5 minutes to go?

by MarcoTheBruin on Sep 23, 2006 7:44 PM PDT reply actions

by JWongUCLA on Sep 23, 2006 7:57 PM PDT up reply actions

We jumped the shark when we didn't go for it
What's the dif between being up by any number between 3 and 7? Nothing. In a goal line situation, you go for it and our Defense will do the rest if we don't make it.
We didn't play the field position game.

by True Blue and Gold on Sep 23, 2006 8:01 PM PDT reply actions

Painful to watch both halves.
I think the play calling in the red zone told an underlying story: limited confidence in Big Ben. Maybe that's why there was not a single shot into the end zone in the air when we were in the red zone. If that's it, if Ben is still just getting used to the college game, then the play calling might make sense for most of the game.

However, what was stunning was the play calling once we fell 10 points down. Two running plays in a row when we needed two scores and had over 80 yards to go just to get the first one and the clock clearly not on our side???? If ever there was a time in the game when we needed to sell out and pass to have even a shot of winning, that was it. I was completely amazed and disgusted. That game was totally winnable for us, and should have been put away in the first half.

I love the United States, I mean no one should ever give up on it. I mean, I don't aprove of Bush either but I'm still going to be there for the 4th of July.

Don't Blame Markey or Austin
They both were brilliant and did what they were supposed to do.

They put the ball in the red zone -- on two great plays.

It's up to the offense to do the rest. And, it didn't.

Yes, neither has Drew's break away speed -- but Markey has the ability to run straight ahead for yardage -- consistently. Speed v. consistency? It's a trade off. But, to criticize Markey for what he didn't do is unfair. We didn't criticize Drew every time he danced around an lost yardage.

You take the best a player can give.

Yesterday, we got that from Markey and Austin. We just didn't finish up what they started.

They punished us for our awful predictable game plan just as they should have. I can just imagine the laughter of Husky fans when even they probably knew what plays we would run in advance in the second half.

i can't believe what just happened....
i remember back in junior high wrestling, our coach would say that for every move, there is a counter move and for every counter, there's a move. well, we were completely kicking their ass for most of the first half (besides in the red zone), then washington updated their game plan and then we were walking around with our cocks in our hands wondering wtf was going on. we had TWO WEEKS for prepare for this game and we still completely choked it away.

where's butch? what about spurrier? i was watching with some friends and after the game we all conceded that we "suck again". what a joke. i need another beer. let's just have howland coach football too and pay him double.

Time for AD to step up.
This game was typical of the KD era.  A  breakdown on every level, although the kids seemed to be trying hard in the first half.  Problem is, there's just no viable leadership.  Nowhere to point the finger except a KD and his exceptionally mediocre group of assistants.

Now, it's up to Guerrero to stop the bleeding and move on.  Lavin to Howland, KD to ?  Ball's in your court, Bob
