UCLA is a deep team with a lot of talent.  However, we do lack size in the interior, and after watching the Florida game last year, I still get nervous about big teams.  Well -- Hello Stanford and the Lopez twins.

I can't say I am really nervous about the game.  I know we could lose, but don't really care if we do.  What is most important to me is that we get experience against a big team with shot blockers.  That will happen today, and it is a good thing for our team.  Win or lose, we gain experience, and experience and learning will get us back to the title game.

All that said, I expect to win--It's Ben Howland, how can I expect any different.

Go Bruins!

First!
Ah, 8pm start time here, wishing I had some sort of cable.  Regarding Stanford away, in 97-98, I heard Lavin talk at a chocolate factory owned by a UCLA alum somewhere between Burlingame and San Mateo, back when I was the Bay Area young alum director.  I remember him making apologies and his hot girlfriend, who had tagged along, standing in the back of the room semi-smiling.

Two years later, when UCLA came back thanks to JaRon Rush (sad) and beat #1 Stanford at Maples, with that ass Billy Packer saying the game was over, I drove out to SFO to congratulate the team. This was when you could go thru security even if you weren't flying.

I found a flight going to LA, and sure enough, Lavs and the boys eventually show up.  I introduced myself, mentioned our chocolate factory meeting two years ago, and asked if it was OK to thank the fellas.  Sure, he said. All I remeber was Moiso was kind enough to take off his headphones.

Lavin could somehow coach those games, which made his coaching tenure so frustrating.

I was also going to school at Georgetown when UCLA came in and stopped its losing streak, meeting Ray Young on the street, and getting to mock GU students in their own student section.  The life of a traveling alumnus, sorry about the long post,  but the memories . . . and its late on Sun night.   Go Bruins!

Impressed
I watched Stanford destroy Southern Cal on Thursday, and I thought we would have problems with the Lopez twins.  Maybe it's because Robin Lopez has two fouls, but Mata is doing good.

by bruinbabe2000 on Jan 28, 2007 5:42 PM PST reply actions

Someone pointed out
that justsc is a bit stupid.  They had about a third of their shots blocked.  But that didn't matter, I guess.  They had a point to prove about shooting from inside, and they were going to prove it no matter what.

I thought we might have trouble (I'm nervous about every game), but not because of the problem justsc has.  I think we might have trouble because of a dreadful case of Lingering Lavinism which I haven't been able to shake.  I haven't realized that the anti-Lavin sits at the end of our bench.

UCLA - 5-9. Stanford - 4-8.

by Nestor on Jan 28, 2007 6:13 PM PST up reply actions

You youngsters won't remember this
but way, way back when the Bruins played Puke for their first championship (or maybe it was the next year vs Michigan), we had to go up against the twin giants, one of whom was named Hack Tyson or Tison.  Our tallest guy was Slaughter or Erickson at 6-5, and both their guys were 7 feet or something.

We beat them like a drum.  Their tall guys were tall, but that was it.

I hope that's the way things go here.

I am VERY reluctant to criticize officials.  They have a tough job, and with basketball it is a very subjective job.  With that said, these Pac 10 officials are doing a terrible job.  There is no consistency from one trip down the floor to another.    Absolutely horrible.

The Only Way We Can Lose
So far this season, the only way we lose or come close to losing is when the refs start calling phantom fouls on our big men (e.g., Oregon). This takes our team out of its rhythym and it logically affects the rest of the team's play. Frankly, Howland does an amazing job keeping his cool and helping the kids keep their cool. If I was out there I would have a couple of technicals and would be off the floor.

Yes, the refs have a hard job but theoretically they are trained to call games consistently throughout the season and certainly during a particularly game. But it is the rare occasion that this happens.

Now, all this said, why the hell are we not getting the ball to Afflalo off screens more here in the 2nd?

by Nestor on Jan 28, 2007 6:47 PM PST reply actions

I was going to respond in the earlier post...
But you deleted it - when I say comfortable it's because win or lose I know tomorrow this team's going to be one of the best (if not -the- best) in the country. What happens tonight will change that little. "Comfortable" was never in reference to the outcome of the game (I'm not comfortable with 30-point leads) - the fact that the Bruins were playing so well before Stanford's current late-game run proves my point, that UCLA is a great team and it takes outside interference to derail that.

And yes, the possibility of a loss is my fault (or should we skip straight to the part where we blame Koach?), clearly. My most sincere apologies for having angered the great and powerful basketball gods.

Offensive boards. Furd has 14 of them (37 overall). UCLA has 25 rebounds in total. That's a problem.

Lopez gets away with murder
i don't care which one it is, brook or robin. maybe it's because of their pretty-boy names. these guys just go over the back, push off, etc and get away with it. we always seem to be playing both the other team and the refs. what's up with that?

Just got home...
And checked the score... clears throat WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?! We were up 12 and then fell this far behind? I've been reading the posts about bad officiating, but still, what's going wrong?

Apparently it's my fault.
Beware the great and powerful Underbruin, destroyer of UCLA athletics, or something.

Alternatively, it could be because the +5 turnover and +1 free-throw margin in the first half became even on turnovers and -13 free-throws in the second-half. Possibly.

Though probably it's still me.

at least
during the ncaa tournament there isn't any pac-10 officials referring the games or is there?

by abby8065 on Jan 28, 2007 7:00 PM PST reply actions

Not as a "crew"
...there is an occasional PAC 10 official, but they don't referee as a "crew".  And there won't be any PAC 10 officials in games UCLA plays...

Never will we get a freaking break from these goddamned refs.

Look, i'm going to blame the refs and Nestor is going to blame you guys for saying the game was over it half. So those are the problems here if we lose.

So friggin light-headed from this game.  Stupid-asses saying the game is over 10 minutes into the game.  Hope you learn from your stupid comments!

More on crap officials...
Stanford has been in the bonus since the 13 minute mark.  We STILL aren't in the bonus..

Collison pisses me off!
He's quick, but holds onto the ball too long and makes some questionable decisions at times.

UCLA Free Throws- 15
Stanford- 31

Even worse than that...
Stanford FT's...35
UCLA...15, only 4 after halftime

You're right, he's still young and will continue to improve, but he better improve on his mental weaknesses very soon!

What is with the court rushing
It seems now anytime someone beats a higher ranked team the students have to rush the floor.  WTF?  Stanford has a pretty good basketball tradition.  Beating UCLA at home is not something that should lead to a riot.  Who was it that said "act like you've been there before"?

God I feel like an old man now.

The Silver Lining
This game probably will have little effect on our tourney seeding and should help our team grow for the important games in March and April.
Bruins Forever

by bruinsince69 on Jan 28, 2007 7:12 PM PST reply actions

Disagree
I think this game could have a big impact on our tourney seeding.  We are now tied with Oregon in the Pac 10.  There are no easy games in the Pac 10 either.  We still have to go out to the desert and up to Washington.  The Pac 10 championsihp is hardly locked up.  If Oregon wins the Pac 10 I don't see how we could be a #1 seed.

by MOlson on Jan 28, 2007 7:17 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed
Makes beating the Ducks this Thursday all the more important.

by mcbruin on Jan 28, 2007 7:19 PM PST up reply actions

Yes
I should have said: if we win our home games. Of course if we start losing left and right it won't matter, but my assumption is that this coach and team are far better than that. This looked like an aberation to me.

Congrats to the Cardinal
They came out in the second half and took it to us.  Fifty points in the second half is pretty inexcusable.

by Sweetbreads Bailey on Jan 28, 2007 7:14 PM PST reply actions

Yep
We got outplayed.  They used ALL of their homecourt advantage and now we have to come out strong v. Oregon.  Coach will have them ready.

by sausmaf on Jan 28, 2007 7:16 PM PST up reply actions

Exactly,
However bad the refs may have been, Stanford took full advantage. Allowing 50 in the second half regardless of circumstance is just unlike us. No way I cna say that we should have won this game after that.

by bruinhoo on Jan 28, 2007 7:19 PM PST up reply actions

Half of the Tree's shots were pure luck, but I'll
still give them credit for battling back.  We, on the other hand, sucked nuts in the second half.  It was a combination of our overconfidence and poor shooting.  Goddam Tree!  Hate them!

by 7SouthHederickHall on Jan 28, 2007 7:14 PM PST reply actions

We
can still we got a number seeding if we win the pac-10 title. lets get ready for Oregon on Thursday! Go Bruins. We can't change the fact those Refs are blind, or  were bribed.

We can all take solace in the fact that Stanford gets the award for having the "fattest and ugliest cheerleaders in the country!" Where did they get them from a Jenny Craig Clinic?

by abby8065 on Jan 28, 2007 7:16 PM PST reply actions

Just pulled up some stats
3,204 women attend Stanford and that's the best they can get?
Go Bruins!!!

by JKNaka on Jan 28, 2007 7:22 PM PST up reply actions

Ref's Killed Us
They shot 33 FT's, we got 15.

We had to play in deep foul trouble all game long.

Many were BS.

The refs converted our tough D into a liability.

We also had great shots that just didn't go down. We could have won at the end -- if we had gotten any good bounces. They got them tonight. We didn't. Shit.

All combined for a loss.

There is nothing good about losing. Nothing.

But, it is one game in a season.

by bruinmike88 on Jan 28, 2007 7:21 PM PST up reply actions

Yes, we can definitely still get a #1 seed in the
tourney.  We only have 2 losses.  I believe that the only team in the country that has a better record than us is Wisconson.

by 7SouthHederickHall on Jan 28, 2007 7:20 PM PST reply actions

No excuses.
They got more points than we did.  If we have to play 5 on 8 then we have to win playing 5 on 8.  That ain't easy, but it's a fact.  (And nobody outside BN cares if we play 5 on 8, just as nobody really cares that Puke gets as many seconds as they need to get that last shot.)

(And no Dorellian cliches until at least tomorrow.  Ben won't be making them, and none of us should either.)

by Fox 71 on Jan 28, 2007 7:23 PM PST reply actions

A long way to go
This team is great, even though they had horrible calls, they showed a lot of poise and composure during the end. And Yeah they had a chance to win. Absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. Stanford is going to make the Tourney so it's ok!  I think we all think we will never lose, I know I don't.

by abby8065 on Jan 28, 2007 7:27 PM PST reply actions

Worst. Officiated. Game. Ever.
Despite the screw job by Libby and company, the Bruins still had a chance to get back in it. Collison made a couple bad mistakes after steals. That's where missing Farmar hurts because he made good decisions with the ball.

Still... while the NCAA investigates those cheats across town in the Bush-gate, they should investigate the Pac-10 refs for just being the worst officials in all of college sports.
