Non-Revenue Sports Bruin Review and Calendar
Bumped from the diaries. GO BRUINS. -N
Let's start at the top where our #1 ranked women's soccer team beat Oregon St. 1-0 Friday night when Christina DeMartino scored in the 82nd minute. Then, the Bruins took care of Oregon in impressive fashion 3-0 Sunday to assure they maintain their #1 ranking for another week. They will take on Stanford and Cal this weekened in the Bay Area, hoping to remain undefeated in Pac 10 play.
Meanwhile, the #12 men put on a strong showing this weekend, first getting a 0-0 draw on Friday night versus a good Stanford squad. Then, they beat #16 Cal 1-0 on a goal by Maxwell Griffin in the 87th minute. The win leaves the Bruins overall record (5-5-2) and conference record (1-1-1) at an even .500. The Bruins will head north this weekend to play Oregon St. Friday night and Washington Sunday as they hope to get above .500 for the first time this season.
The #4 men's water polo team got stuck in a few tight battles against the nation's best this weekend and came out decently. First, they beat Pacific and #3 Cal to get to the SoCal tournament semifinals where they lost a tight match in overtime to #1 USC 7-6. Then in a consolation match, the Bruins fell to the same Cal team they defeated earlier 8-7. This week,
The #7 women's volleyball team took on Oregon Friday night and Pauley Pavilion and won in 4 games, 31-29, 22-30, 30-24, 36-34. Then, the Bruins were stunned by Oregon St. as the Beavers took down the Bruins in 5 tough games, 29, 16-30, 30-27, 17-30, 15-13. UCLA will not finish off the first half of their conference schedule this weekend at the Washington schools this Thursday and Friday.
This weekend, both the men's and women's golf teams will get to work. The #1 ranked women will play at the Stanford/Pepsi Invitational, while the #2 men are in Evanston, Illinois for the Pac 10/Big Ten Challenge.
In cross country, both the men and women Bruin teams were in Terre Haute, Indiana. The #19 men, finished a very impressive eighth at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational while the women finished a disappointing 25th out of 35 teams. Both the men and women will go to Fullerton this weekend for the Fullerton Invitational.
The women's swim team had another, expected easy victory as they went to UCSB and dominated 160-102. Meanwhile the women rowers finished 3rd in Oklahoma City at the Head of Oklahoma. The rower's have the week off.

4 games over the weekend
I wasn't too impressed with the Men's team in either game - they seem to lack a cutting edge in terms of actually scoring. Constantly, they seem to get the ball in good position (I'd say they had more chances in both games, even if they had fewer shots than the other teams), only to do nothing with it. It really annoys me when yet another cross goes straight to the goalkeeper, as it passes only a couple yards in front of the goal line, along the ground, or when there's no one to pick up the loose ball just outside the area after a corner or free kick. They seem to constantly throw too many people too far forwards - someone needs to stay back in the open space you create by bombing forward. That's how the Women scored on Friday - instead of standing inside the six-yard box, DeMartino was waiting in about mid-penalty area, completely open. If only the men were watching. Maybe I'm just frustrated after seeing 197 goal-less minutes. And when they finally did score, Griffin appeared to be almost offsides on the through ball that led to his shot off a rebound. I wouldn't say I'm an expert, but surely that's being involved in the play...
I also went to the Oregon volleyball game. Fun, but I don't know much about the sport. Kevin Love was there, though, and seemed to be teaching Stanback(? - that's a pure guess, cause I only saw his back) what was going on.
Can't go to anything this week though, except for the water polo at Sunset Rec (and maybe at the Rose Bowl if the bus arrives early enough).
