The "Show Me" Season: Cal Open Thread

So here we go again folks. We can keep this simple.  We are confident that our Sleeping Beauty is going to deliver an expected W in this "show-me" season because it after all it's in those wristbands.

There will be  a huge crowd (featuring a real college band pictured below) at the Grand Daddy and they should go home happy because the wristbands will deliver a Bruin victory:

somebody get the band some friggin true blue unis already.

True Blue
I agree ..... I was at the UDub game .... first I'd been to in many, many years .... since Prothro's Gary Beban team beat sUc:) .... and thought they had a guest band when I first saw them.  Then I heard they were debuting their new unis and hoped they would be true blue.  Wonder why.  With all the different blues, it's hard to get the real sea of blue effect throughout the stadium like the reds and oranges of other schools.  Lots of navy and black to go with the Bruin Blue.

new uniforms
the band is actually getting new uniforms that are going to be debuted during Blue and Gold Week and at the 'SC game. they aren't quite true blue, but it's closer than this dark blue deal going on. it's more of the blue color used for the layout of this website (maybe a little lighter).

The Ol Football Coach Loses
The real USC losing to Vanderbilt.

Wonder if our targeting their coach as our near top pick affected their team morale. You know, tank the game so we'll take our eyes off their coach.

Getting Ready......
Going to follow the game on the computer today as ABC has Michigan State-Ohio State here in the upper Midwest.  Did get to catch some of my alma mater, Iowa, getting hammered by Purdon't and in a REAL laugher, NDSU (North Dakota State) beat the Goofy Gophers downtown at the Metrodome.  HILARIOUS.

Guess we'll find out how the rest of our season's gonna go after today, huh?

The game's not on TV in Tampa
For some reason, the local folks thought justsc against Notre Dame was a better draw.

So I got on the net and saw Bell up the middle for 2 yards, then Bell up the middle for two yards, then Cowan incomplete pass.  Then I knew that the TV people got it right.  Even I don't want to watch this sort of crap.

Let's just hope no one gets hurt.  And I include those of us at the keyboards.

Good commercial on the FL - KY game
A very familiar voice talking about championships, preparation and all that.  There's a shot of a lot of trophies.  The Hartford deer or elk or whatever it is walks out of the trophy room and onto a basketball court.  The familiar voice says something about preparation leading to championships.  Basketball fans will recognize the voice of Coach and John and Nell Wooden Court.  The commercial never identifies Coach or UCLA or the court, but you know.

Nice commercial.  I'm not going to buy any Hartford stuff, but it's still a nice commercial.

We have
3 scoring drives.  Cal has 2, but stil leads by 1.

Interesting, because KD's last job was here with the Denver Broncos. And the Broncos offense has been heavily criticized for the last 7 years for being very poor in the red zone.  Way too many FG's and not enough TD's.  Maybe KD was listening to Mike Shanahan a liitle too closely?

Maybe...
I wish we a lot of different guys on our sideline.  But without Elway and Terrell Davis, the Broncos' version of the WCO has been very very average.  Lots of 4 yd passes on 3rd and 7, lots of field goals inside the 20, lots of losses to less talented teams.  Sound familiar?

Nice inside pass to Forsett who runs past one tackler and goes to about our 4

Looked like a clip on Ward but no call.

They're picking on him no matter who he covers.  Why are at the very least we should be making them pass to somebody else.

That has to be one of the worst coaching decisions ever made.

KD calls timeout before 4th & 1
The play call was to draw Cal offsides and get a freebie.  Didn't work.  % yard penalty, punt into endzone, Cal ball on 20.

Fouts & Brand ripping CTS.  Just posted some of DD's stats on screen right before play too.

Here's an idea..
how about we use all timeouts in order to show Cal our #1 ranked hurry up offense should we still be in the game with 2:00 left.

Yes of course, thats CTS's way to play the game,
why use smart play calling for a TD when you can go conservative in the Red Zone, get a sure FG and produce a nail-biter finish to the game.

We all want KD gone
I'm sure many of us had him fired after not going for it on 4 and 1 and then taking the delay of game.

But it's always nice to beat Cal.

This was my biggest fear
The biggest window of opportunity of all time was the Sunday or Monday after the Notre Dame game.  If this win gets him another year, it will be the most costly victory in history.

No kidding
This victory was definitely bittersweet.  Just another reason for the "let's keep KD in Westwood" camp.  I'm happy for our players, but we all deserve better than this.  I can already sense the "undefeated in the Pac-10" trolls coming out of the woodwork.

Last year and this year.

He would have been fired had we lost this game.

But, I'm glad we won.

We will not win out this way.

This is an offense we can handle. We will have trouble with others. And, we still gave up a lot of yards.

Stat's look like we played a much better 2nd half on D -- but not on O.

I'll watch the parts I missed after I drive my daughter to a dance.

so which way is it gonna be... before a lot of people on here are expecting a win, or its a failure.  then we win, and they say, well, we shouldn't have won because we aren't as good on paper.  and... where are all the bruce davis and bruin defense haters now... fuck that. we took down #14 cal with our QB nursing a torn MCL.  We will always be better than cal... on paper and on the field.  And let me add that PC is an absolute stud.  He is more of a qb than sorry as ben olson will ever be.  what a game.  go bruins.

Pls justify the ND loss at the Rose Bowl
since you're on a roll.  ND at home is being pounded 38-0.  They are clearly one of the worst team in Div 1.  Yet their only win is over UCLA.

Cal's defense is pathetic, as evidenced in this game and its loss to Oregon State.

by bluegold on Oct 20, 2007 4:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

A great game by the players
But Dorrell did his best to lose the game.  Simple as that.

And I think Walker may have answered a lot of questions about his ability to stop the spread.  If we can repeat this type of performance against Oregon I would have no problem with keeping doing our best to keep him as DC after this year.

Taylor
Seemed to be carted off or stretchered off the field...after the game. When the team was leaving the field, there was still a group huddled around him and you could see a couple people who were probably his parents also down on the field. Looked like it might have been serious, given the behavior of the people (including players) around him.

Gutsy Bruins won this one
The Cowans, Verner, Bruce Davis, Bell, Markey was in there, skinny Breazell delivering the hit at the end of a run, - no doubt we've got some players with HEART.  Imagine the possibilities if we had a real coach.
