Quick Thoughts on Today's Game

Thought I'd get some thoughts down on this one before I get too drunk to remember what happened:

Star-divide

    * UCLA won this game despite both the coaching staff and the officiating. Every decision Karl Dorrell makes is the wrong decision. He's simply in over his head as a game coach. How on earth do you burn a timeout to set up a fourth and one play, then run the crappy "try to draw them off" BS that they ended up running? The man is not a good head coach, and he should have been fired right after that play.
    * The officials were awful. First they needed 10 minutes to review a play that never should have been reviewed in the first place. They called UCLA for an offensive pass interference call that even the guys in the truck couldn't find on a replay. They handed Berkeley a touchdown on a play where Desean Jackson never actually caught the ball. And somehow six referees didn't see a trip in full speed that a million viewers did. It was the most obvious trip call I've ever seen. It cost UCLA a first down, possibly a touchdown, and almost the game.
    * The run defense was awesome. They dominated Justin Forsett for the majority of the game, and Berkeley really only ran the ball well out of the shutgun. The run defense was one of the major difference makers today.
    * There's something about Pat Cowan that just makes the team play better. I can't explain it. Apparently it doesn't come through in practice. It may have nothing to do with his physical ability, but there's something about the way the team plays when he's in the game that works better than when Ben Olson is in the game. I really like Ben Olson, and I was jazzed when he committed to UCLA, but the team simply moves the ball better with Cowan. And it's probably just coincidence, but the defense seems to have played better when Cowan's been in there as well.
    * Berkeley is a very good team, but they run a pro-style offense, which the Bruins can handle. It's the tricky stuff that gets them, and today, the defense won the game. Although the turnover battle was relatively even, Berkeley's were bigger, and obviously the ATV interception return at the end was the difference. The Horton pick was nice, but unnecessary.
    * I don't have the numbers in front of me, but it seems that one big difference today from what we've seen lately were negative plays, or a lack thereof. Cowan excelled today in two key areas: he didn't turn the ball over with ill-advised throws, or tipped passes that become picks, and at worst, he got the ball back to the line of scrimmage. It's a little thing, often overlooked, but there's a big difference between 2nd and 10 and 2nd and 15, especially with their limitations when it comes to gaining yards in chunks. Cowan gets the ball back the line of scrimmage, and that makes a big difference.
    * Like or not, the Bruins are 4-0 in conference, though they close with their three toughest games. I'd love for them to win the Pac 10 and go to the Rose Bowl, but it probably means Dorrell will come back. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I mean, I want him gone, but I can't root for the Bruins to lose. Maybe they'll face the Illini, who will then kill UCLA and get Dorrell fired. That may be the best possible end to the season. I could live with that.  Not I think Illinois will a) be in the Rose Bowl, or b) kill UCLA, but as an Illinois law alum, I could live with that outcome if it meant Dorrell got the boot.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

A win is
a win.  Yes, KD is toast.  Yes, we won. Nuf sed.

The 4th and 1 call
That offsets anything in this game that could be considered good game management by the head coach.  That was the worst decision that could have been made in that situation.

Thank you!
JESUS, that was embarrassing.  The Dorvell Monster should have been fired immediately after that play alone.

I could write an entire diary about that one play and I'm not kidding.

Holy sh*t, that was unbelievable.  I thought the entirety of Section 17 was going to grab their pitchforks and torches and head down after Dorrell after that call.

My head nearly exploded...
after the 4th and 1 call and subsequent punt that netted 18 yards.  Time and again in 'obvious' situations such as this, KD tries to out think the D  rather than letting players make plays.

Dorrell's inability to adjust/general stubbornness will ultimately prove to be his downfall.

On the officials
I may be completely wrong, but from my seat in Section 9 (3/4 up, near the General Admission section), two of those issues on your list can be mostly explained:

10 minute review: the referee got hurt and was out of the game for a while. It appeared the man taking over for the referee was also getting fitted with a microphone in that time. 10 mins may be too long, but I think that added to the delay.
Offensive pass interference (on Austin?): looking down the sideline, it appeared that Austin pushed off. I saw an arm extend, appear to make contact, and Austin veer off, with the Cal DB make no move with him. Also, almost all of the PIs called in this game looked fair. This, I'll grant, could be completely wrong - some of the PIs called in the Notre Dame game looked legit from the student section, and BS on replay.
Jackson's second TD, and the trip: couldn't see either of those at all. But, I would have said PI on Brown was fair, even if there was no catch. No idea when said trip even happened.

They were bad calls
There was a yard between Austin and his defender.  The trip was on the last drive when UCLA got the FG to go up 23-21.  There was a sweep to the left and a Cal player stuck out their leg to bring down Bell or Moline.

The pass interference on Brown was correct though, and Jackson did have the ball first.

Jackson's second TD
The pass interference was a good call, but the touchdown was not.  He never caught the ball.  It wasn't even close.  And normally, I wouldn't care.  You'd figure they'd score anyway, but:
  1. Against ND, the Irish had 1st and goal at the one, and had to settle for a field goal, and;
  2. Berkeley got shut down on a goal line stand last week against OSU.
Would they have scored anyway?  Maybe.  Probably.  But because of crappy refs, we'll never know.

The trip was on third and long from deep in Berkeley territory.  You may have been on the other side of the field, but on TV, it was the most obvious call I've ever seen.

The trip
It probably wasn't visible from the student section, and wasn't all that visible from the normal TV view.  But from close up it was obvious.

Again, I may have been very wrong.
Sometimes the seats in the student section aren't the greatest, and the Rose Bowl doesn't help, putting on so few replays of controversial decisions. I was mainly posting because of that first observation about the long review, and added on my thoughts about the other refereeing decisions, because the consensus about their quality seemed to be completely different from what I saw. That is all.

Normal TV view
I was in a bar watching it with no sound.  It was totally obvious, at least to me, at full speed.  I don't know, but for me, it was pretty easy to spot right away.

WRT Cowan
I think that it is less an issue of the team playing harder for one QB over another than it is that one player is more creative.  The system we are running doesn't work.  Pat's mobility makes improvisation easier, prevents negative plays, and keeps drives alive.  He also seems to do a better job of getting to the line and snapping the ball.  I wonder if olsen's cadence at the line is part of the reason for the OL penalties.

As for the defense playing better with Pat on the field... I think it is likely a result of the offense extending drives and giving the D some time to rest.  The run-run-pass-punt offensive game plan Dorrell uses when Olsen is in leads to a lot of 3 and out situations and keeps the D on the field too long.
