Why do you ask am I posting this at 4:30pm mst the day after the game? I live near Calgary, Alberta, Canada and I drove 9 hours to Pullman to see this game. 18 hours of drive time and that is what I was treated too.
You guys think your dissappointed! Because I am a glass half full guy, let me start off giving props where they are due. The the 200-300 or so Bruin faithful in the Bruins stadium section, we had a great time (until WSU blew the game open) and no one left early. Everyone cheered their guts out.
Pullman is the worst football town there is. The fans are stupid rednecks, only about 25-30000 show up in a stadium with ZERO intensity (the stadium was nowhere near full),and it is freakin cold. WSU does no deserve to be a Pac-10 team (but that is another rant). So for the fans that perservered, full marks.
The defense, they played their asses off. They couldn't get much pressure in the backfield though, but they did play hard. Kyle Bosworth was a machine out there, this kid really busts his ass every play. The offense was trying, but it is all play calling that is the problem. Ultra conservative annd poor execution when they did take a small risk. I don't want to bag on a kid, but Terence Austin could not catch a cold in that game. Had he caught even a couple of those "less conservative" passes (longer than 6 yard throws), the game may have been different. That is what a big time WR is supposed to do. But just ultra conservative play calls that to be honest, the players looked bored running.
To my final point, what I really noticed and what is most dissapointing is a lack of fire from the entire organization. I think a team is a reflection of their coach and this team just show's no spark. They work hard, which I can respect, but it appears the Bruins just don't want it. It was in the way they walked, when they came over to salute the fans before the game, and in their play. Everything is without emotion or fire. There was no burning in their bellies, and that was the worst part of going to the game. They have all the Xs and Os down, but it just looks to me like they don't enjoy being UCLA Football players. Bruce Davis aside though, I was very impressed with him, he came up and pumped the crowd and he looked like he truly loves playing UCLA football. But he was the only kid that had a real spark.
I blame Karl Dorrell for ruining these kids fun and drive to be UCLA Football players, a privilege for any kid who has ever played football. They seem like great kids that just need some real leadership. I knew 5 years ago after I heard Dorrell speak for the first time that he was no leader of young men and this game proved it too me. I don't really follow basketball but I do watch the Bruins when they are on and you can just tell that the guys love playing for Coach Howland and love to play UCLA basketball, and I pick this up from watching on TV while knowing little about the sport.
Thanks for allowing me the chance to post. The fans did Bruins Nation proud considering what they endured.
