Coach Howland extends

Coach Howland got his contract extended today with a nice pay increase and incentive package. He's worth every dollar. I'm sure everyone here is happy that Ben Howland will be our coach for a while.

From ESPN

The Bruins reached the Final Four in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1976. The Bruins won the Pac-10 title the last two seasons, finishing 30-6 in 2006-07.

"There is no place I would rather be coaching than UCLA," the 50-year-old Howland said in a statement. "This has always been my dream job. I grew up a Bruin basketball fan and it still is hard for me to believe that I am the caretaker of the program that Coach (John) Wooden built.

"Back-to-back Final Fours are great, but our team is looking forward to the challenge of taking the next step."

...

"He has re-established UCLA as one of the nation's elite programs, as our back-to-back Final Fours illustrate, and has built a solid foundation that will keep us at the forefront for the foreseeable future," athletic director Dan Guerrero said. I can't wait for the season to start. I miss camping outside of Pauley with pizza courtesy of Coach. What a great guy.

On a side note: the Red Sox beat the Angels and the Rockies beat the Phillies. My money is on the D'backs over the Cubs.

If you haven't read it Page 2 explains why the Cubs must lose. Sorry Cubs fans.

UCLA Fight Fight Fight!

We are solid
just effing amazing .. Howland deserves everything he's getting.  We are set for a very very long time.  And to think it wasnt long ago that were stuck in purgatory not knowing if we'd ever be saved ... which of course is where we are at with football.

Amazing
It's incredible how humble this guy is after taking his team to back-to-back Final Fours.  He is still looking to improve his team in order to win Championships.  I would never in a million years expect to see someone like Coach Howland talking about "answering the bell" after a Meaningless win to a crappy team .... Dorrell has got to sell himself, but Howland can afford to let the results do the talking.

This guy is my hero

Seven More Years Of Greatness!
$1.5 Million for an elite coach? What a steal. He'll pay for all seven years with this year's team alone.

With every big win he lessens the chance of Steve Lavin ever getting a coaching job again.

This extension will also help fend off NBA offers should Coach Howland draw attention.

I'd also say the Pauley restoration is now 100% likely with it's most vocal supporter locked in for seven years.

Ben Howland is a blue and gold dream come true.

Don't Look Now....
Timmeh is using UCLA as the standard in his latest quotes about difficult games.

"But we have a young team that will have expectations, and we will need to learn that you play the game a little differently on the road. You don't experiment with that at UCLA or at Washington or at Stanford. ..."

(Talking about mid-major road games)

"As coaches, we're always pointing to games that are likely to be very difficult," Floyd said. "At our first meeting, I addressed this game as one of major concern for me. I told them I knew they'd be ready to play against UCLA, Memphis, Oklahoma, but that this was a game that is going to be of utmost importance on our schedule. A lot of our players don't quite yet have a full understanding of what the road's like. They need to know that teams at every level know how to play."

No mention of Arizona aka The Old Standard

Old Lute needs to think
hard about retirement now.  He did well with a program at rock bottom before his arrival but I do think time is passing him by rapidly.  Whatever are those pennants they're so proud of at Mckale may only be what they really deserve in the years to come.  Bye bye Mildcats.

God Bless Howland and UCLA Basketball
His comments about our school's history, tradition and how many NBA players we've put out there, gave me goosebumbs! He's genuine, bleeds Blue/Gold and the kids he recruits see that! If you want to play with the best, learn from the best, be apart of a grand tradition and have a legit shot at being ready for the NBA.. you go to UCLA! Good call, good move Dan!
