A Stanford case analysis

I realize this isn't a Stanford blog, but talking about our current program is so depressing that I think looking at what an amazing thing Stanford just did with their piddly-sh!t roster last week could provide us some hope for next year and a new era in Bruin football.

I remember at the beginning of the year with BN's Stanford analysis in the days leading up to the season opener - and for good reason this site described the Cardinal as likely to be one of the more pathetic Pac 10 teams in recent memory.  Their "reasonable expectations" before the season surely were that Harbaugh's fire would eventually catch on and the team would believe in itself and improve as the season progressed.  Last Saturday, just five games in they shocked the world.

We need a coach with fire.  I don't want to praise Harbaugh too much because he's a bit brash, but his fire and confidence gets into his players and for that - good for Stanford.  It's darkest before the brightest dawn, and the turnaround needn't take 3-4 years.  We've got the athletes in our program and the ones coming in (and will we really lose that many commits when they see Dorrell go?  do we honestly think these 17 years olds are deaf and blind and can't read the writing on the wall the Dorrell's gone?) that this ship can be righted next year.

I realize this post didn't bring any groundbreaking analysis to the table, but it's been nice to vent.  UCLA deserves better ... being at the Rose Bowl Saturday - it was a disgrace.

Basketball can't come soon enough ... GO BRUINS!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

A little OT
but it was nice to hear about the Toejam family booing the team both at halftime and at the end of the game.  Very classy.

Of course, based on my visual observations only, it appears that about 50% of the people wearing SuC jerseys in L.A. not only never went to SuC, but they also are in severe need of a good Weight Watchers program.

Now watch it, Barnes
You're hitting a little too close to home with the Weight Watchers crack.  Remember, I just got back from a cruise, and the ultimate destination on any cruise is the Dining Room.  Carnival has this thing called the "Warm Melting Chocolate Cake."  It is to cakeness what CTS is to coaching ineptitude.

But Fox
We are all beautiful, slim and talented over the internet.  :)  I hope you had a great trip.

And I'm just calling 'em like I see 'em.

Next time there is a SuC game in L.A., everyone check out the SuCster slobs picking up sandwiches at Phillippe's downtown.  It's like a convention of gangsta fatties.

Hey there Barnes
Don't knock Phillippe's. There's not a better french dip in the city. Although I'd take a good brat grilled on the Rose Bowl golf course any day

Philippe's ROCKS.
For those that haven't been to Sandwich Mecca, get a lamb, double-dip, with Swiss, and the hot mustard on the side.

You'll thank me for it.

Swiss??
Blue cheese!

But the mustard IS great.

No, I'm with you
I like Phillippe's a lot.  That's why I know so many SuC slobs go there on game day.  I'm there, too.

Actually, my favorite is the the lamb sandwich (double dipped) with blue cheese at Phillippe's.  And the prices can't be beat.

Great, now I'm hungry.

I knew Rye would start agreeing with me!
Phillippes (or however you spell it) is about as good as it gets.  There are some bizarre looking things sitting in jars that I'm really afraid to look at too closely, but that's the only bad thing.  I understand that French Dip sandwiches were invented there.  Even if they weren't invented there, I believe in my heart of hearts that they were perfected there.

There really isn't anything not to like about Phillippes.  And as I mentioned, my son did a short bit about Dodger fans stopping there on the way to a game for the Fox game of the week, and it was actually pretty good.  (And to his credit, he got some free sandwiches.)

Holiday tradition for me...
... is taking Ms. M and M, Jr. and Little Princess M to the Xmas tree auctions in December, buying a 5-6 footer, then schlepping to Philippe's for sandwiches to take home.  Kids eat and watch Xmas videos while Ms. M and I eat and hang ornmaents.

If I'm luck enough to get to heaven, I want to be able to do that every weekend that I'm up there.

Brad Paisley has a great song called...
... "Online."

Some of the words are:

"When I'm online
I'm out in Hollywood, I'm
SIIIX-foot-five
And I look damn good

"And even on a slow day
I can have a three-way--
Chat with two women at one time.

"I'm so much cooler online. ..."

You get the idea.

2 years in UCLA University Chorus, baby...
Hey, there's a reason I do a bunch of song parodies.  ;-)

Next step - opera chorus!
You can't miss, having a UCLA background.

But don't start with "La Boheme."  The chorus part is short but difficult.

On the subject of the recruits
Who here believes that the recruits are coming to UCLA DESPITE of KD and not BECAUSE of him?  They are coming to play for UCLA, not to play for KD.  I mean, given KD's track record the past 4 years, how could any recruit say -- Hey, I really like KD's system and I'm anxious to play for his system.  KD has no system.

I am almost certain that many, if not most, of the recruits relish the idea of playing at UCLA under a new and more capable headcoach, and are hoping right along with us that a coaching change is going to occur.

If KD is fired, they'll stay if . . .
. . . we hire a GOOD coach QUICKLY after he's gone.  If it takes a while, then I think that'll be a problem.  If he's fired right after SC, despite going to a bowl game or not, they need to find a good coach quickly so the recruits don't get anxious and go elsewhere.  you know SC will be all over them when that happens.

recruits
Some come to the program, most come for the coach. Recruiting is done at a very personal level and done by mainly the assistant coaches. Keep in mind that for all of his many faults KD is a very personable guy.

Most of KD's bad recruiting classes of the past were built on bad seasons. Last years class was because the Bruins had just finished with a 10 win season and bowl victory. This years class was built on that momentum and a win over USC. Hopefully the Bruins don't lose many from this incoming great class based on this seasons results. The problem is the '09 class will likely be bad if there isn't a coaching change.

One Reason Recruits Will Come If KD Fired
Everyone on the team starts in the same place with a new set of coaches.

We will be young and, by necessity, will play young players.

BUT -- we must hire a great coach for them and for posterity.

I actually think firing him now will increase our chances of holding on to the verbals. If they think he might be back and that we tolerate this mediocrity -- they may take off.

Recruiting Issue
Will they come, or won't they come may not be the biggest issue for our new coach to deal with.  While it has been reported that this is an excellant class of recuits, since almost all the available schollies have been offerred, it doesn't leave any room for the new guy to bring in his type of players.  Of course, that may not be a problem, since by the time DG finally fires KD there may not be many good recruits left.

As 66 notes, the sooner DG pulls the trigger on KD, not only will it better our chances of hanging on to the verbal recruits, it will give the new coach an opportunity to attract good replacements for those that decide not to honor their vebal commitments.
