UPDATE: A bad, bad week to be a Trojan

From the diaries. GO BRUINS. -N

First, Southern Cal loses in what I hear is the biggest upset (in terms of point spread) since they started tracking point spreads.

Then, just a couple minutes ago, I see this.

One of the two erstwhile sports marketers who allegedly made improper payments to Reggie Bush while he was still at USC has agreed to meet with NCAA investigators and provide documentation of financial transactions between Bush and him.

<snip>

If investigators find that Bush received improper benefits while playing for the Trojans, USC could be forced to forfeit games. The program could face sanctions if it were proved that coaches knew or should have known about the alleged benefits.

First, they most likely lose their chance at a national championship a few days ago, and now it looks more likely they'll lose their one national championship from their recent "dynasty".  If this sticks - and everyone knows it should, because everyone knows that many rules were unquestionably violated - the NCAA has to throw the book at Reggie Bush, and the program, because otherwise they will know they've made a mockery of their own system.  I had started to think that they would get away with this because nobody would step forward with evidence, so I'm extremely encouraged by this new development.

Sometimes a little distraction from UCLA football can be a good thing...

UPDATE: And it just got better (for Bruins fans):

[Kevin Love] promised that he would not be too aggressive in throwing elbows -- or anything else -- in the general area of point guard Darren Collison. USC freshman and fellow high school superstar O.J. Mayo reportedly broke the jaw of Trojans point guard Daniel Hackett with a misplaced elbow during a pickup game last month. "An elbow, yeah, right," Love said. "Dan's a good friend of mine too. I'm never going to lay a hand or lay a fist or elbow on a teammate like that." Kevin Love, a "good friend" of Daniel Hackett, implying to the media that the supposed savior of Southern Cal's basketball team plays dirty? And implies that it was a punch and not an errant elbow that led to the injury? I'm wondering if this is something that Love has talked to Hackett about and if it reflects the opinion of the Southern Cal basketball team. To sum up:

1) The Trojans' present football situation just proved that it might be bleak.

2) Their past is tainted by the Reggie Bush scandal.

3) Their future might be adversely affected by the past in the form of scholarship penalties.

4) They can't (as we can) count on basketball to make everything less painful when games start in November.

It's still good to be a Bruin.

UPDATE II: -N As expected Yahoo! Sports, which did all the hard work of originally blowing up the story has some more crucial details on the latest development wrt to the Bush scandal at Southern Cal. Two things really stuck out to me. First was how the claims of Bush and his minions of "extortion" seem to have blown up in their faces:

Two sources told Yahoo! Sports that attorneys for Lake and Bush have not spoken since the failed settlement attempt in June. However, according to four sources, Bush angered both Lake and Michaels by accusing them of extortion in a recent interview aired Sept. 13 on ESPN's "Outside The Lines."

In that interview, Bush said of the NCAA investigation and his family's alleged impropriety: "For me, I look at it as – and my family looks at it as – extortion. Because these were guys we'd known our whole lives … when I was a freshman in high school, they weren't asking for money. When I was getting older, and then all of the sudden my year with the possibility of me coming out, all this stuff comes out."

According to a source at ESPN, that segment aired despite a threat from Bush's camp that the running back would halt future cooperation with the network if the interview was not pulled.

Sources told Yahoo! Sports following the segment that Bush might have violated his confidentiality clause with Michaels by directing claims of extortion at the New Era financiers. The FBI briefly investigated claims of extortion from Bush's attorney, including interviewing several of Lake's family members and acquaintances before a federal grand jury. After the depositions, a federal source told Yahoo! Sports that the FBI would not be pursuing the extortion claims. So, so much for all the extortion BS being peddled by the Bush clan and the immoral cowards (who will do whatever it takes to bury their head in the sand for the sake of some cheap wins against teams other than Stanford). Anyways. The other thing that was just amazing to read from that Yahoo piece was how Bush still seems to be in a complete state of denial: "So my parents struggled to pay bills here and there, one of those being rent. I think just like any normal average family, you struggle to pay bills sometimes, and that's all it was. And the media kind of blew it out to kind of make it seem like we were living in this nice gorgeous house – which I never lived there – living in this nice gorgeous house rent free, and it wasn't anything like that. Uh, Reggie if this was just a simple matter of paying regular rent, then why all the lollygagging? Why all the hemming and hawing and the refusal to cooperate with the NCAA? And, more importantly, if there was nothing wrong here, why the need for a confidentiality agreement?

Anyone? Scott Wolf, you there? GO BRUINS.

I'm not hopeful
USC is a moneymaker for the NCAA and while it's ridiculous that they'll let something like this pass, the fact that nothing has happened yet leads me to believe the NCAA will just wait until people forget about the Bush situation.

I need *something* positive to think about
The fact that this guy is even talking to the NCAA was the first sign that I can remember since the investigation started that the NCAA is serious about getting any facts at all in this case.  I have been leaning toward agreeing with you that they just want it to go away, so I was encouraged to see that someone is going to give them the evidence they need to act if someone over there has the integrity to do so.

I'm not saying that it's definitely going to happen, but I think it went from vaguely possible to probable that there will be some sort of punishment meted out.  If they have the evidence in hand, they can't continue to look the other way.

This might just be logic speaking, of course, and sometimes the NCAA seems incapable of understanding that.

These are exactly my thoughts on the subject

Lay with dogs and you'll get fleas
If SC looses another game, some prestige will go with it, the more the NCAA is likely to be tougher. Remember, SMU was once a power-house of a program with a LOT of wealthy supporters? I doubt we'll see another death penalty.

HOWEVER, know one thing, if you sell your soul, you better keep winning or it will all come back and smash you. Loosing games means loosing alumni support, money, ticket sales, T-shirt slales, etc. Once that happens, the NCAA doesn't see a need to protect you.

This year, more than ever, my fellow Bruins, cheer hard and cheer loud for all SC opponents! Watch as those fair weather/band wagon SC fans throw away their Trojan gear in the trash next to their Michael Jordan Chicago Bull jerseys!

GO BRUINS!

The big picture
I think this is the beginning of the end for Pom Pom and his gang. He's lost all his talented assistants, has a mess on his hands at the RB position, and now the QB position is looking shaky. This is the PERFECT TIME for us to bring in a stud head coach and turn the tide against U$C with a new winning streak. For some reason, I think we can beat them again this year. These kids don't seem to realize how big the rivalry is because they have been so focused on their quest for a national championship...let's strike while the iron is hot! Yes, I still want to beat U$C even with KD. That win won't mean much anymore and he should still get canned.

Good catch
Plus Leinart is out, Bush is having yet another rotten year, the Toejam family is booing the team on the field, and Booty's Heisman was just flushed down the can.

It's not all bad, everyone!

Agreed
As far as the SCumbags are concerned, its always open season to blast the sh!t out of those criminals (alleged) from South Central. Just because its not on our homepage, it shouldn't stop the rest of you from piling on those immoral scums.

While SC is still in the running for the NC...
...nothing will happen.  Too much embarassment for the NCAA.  But as soon as loss number two happens, we might hear more from the NCAA, but not until that happens.

by Free the 16 on Oct 9, 2007 4:59 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I was thinking about the same thing
Southern Cal's lost more than an embarrassing game against lowly Stanford; they also lost a little bit of their status as untouchable by the gutless faction within the NCAA.

Remember who we're dealing with
By the time the justsc spin meisters finish things, this guy will be passing polygraph tests, and it will turn out that he (a) has never heard of reggie bu$h or justsc, and (b) thought he was giving a free house to George Bush.

justsc has been pulling this stuff for decades.  It has often been far more blatant - there was a link (which I can't find now, darn it) by some justsc receiver who was there when McKay was coaching and who described in detail how the guys would line up for payday.  Did you ever hear of the nca (I don't have enough respect for them to give them two a's) doing anything?

The justsc sleaze factor will protect them.  They have absolutely totally sold their collective souls to both the devil and the dark side of the force (except of course for the Humanitarian, who is well-known to be an angel.)

Here you go Fox
It was from one of my posts...

http://home.comcast.net/~spytime/

I found it when I was trying to track down the full story on why Marv Goux left the Trojans.  Seem to recall he got in trouble with the NCAA for selling tickets for the players, but I couldn't find a good link.

by Free the 16 on Oct 10, 2007 9:37 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

THIS IS EXACTLY IT
(Caps intentional.)

This story needs to be page 1 above the fold.  This is justsc personified.  We need to get this to the ncaa morons who are scratching their heads as to whether there are any institutional problems at justsc.  IT IS ONE MASSIVE INSTITUTIONAL PROBLEM AND IT HAS BEEN FOR DECADES.

What is the issue here, ncaa?  What can't you figure out?

by Fox 71 on Oct 10, 2007 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Eh
Reggie Bush is not going to be touched.

Also, they might get a slap on the wrist when the program is in the dumps. Like, 4 or 5 win dumps. It'll be a few years at least. No way will the NCAA step in when the team is riding high.

Why not? Because USC brings in a lot of money. The NCAA is good for nothing but collecting money. That's just how they are.

by njbruin on Oct 9, 2007 8:14 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Oklahoma is fairly famous too
And, as pointed out in the article mentioned by Nestor:
Pressure has been growing on the NCAA for months and came to a head recently when the organization struck Oklahoma with multiple penalties stemming from a scandal uncovered before the 2006 season. Oklahoma President David Boren recently praised his school's efforts to clean up its issues and compared it favorably with the lack of fact-finding in the USC case.
They might like to think so, but Southern Cal is not all-important to the NCAA; they have one only one national championship in the Carroll era, and they can't risk upsetting the other 100+ schools if they let the Trojans walk.

I'm not saying the NCAA wouldn't rather this just go away, but I don't think just saying "USC brings in a lot of money" is enough of an argument to prove that sanctions aren't coming if you compare them to the vast number of teams playing college football overall.

Oklahoma and SUC stories NOT the same
There is a big difference between these incidents.  The facts regarding the OK incident were out there in the public before the university could do anything about it.  So, they really had no choice but to come clean.  SUC, on the other hand, has been able to control most of the information by buying silence (until now), so they didn't have the same incentive as OK to come clean.

The "until now" part is huge, as it's too late to come clean.  So, if the NCAA finds out that SUC had information it didn't reveal to the NCAA, then the NCAA may hit them much harder than they did OK.

I can hope, can't I?

Arrogance Personified
Not that a coach should have to teach sportsmanship to players, it is so arrogant that they excuse this behavior with the explanation that they haven't lost in six years? Carroll is a tool.

by SinnerBoy 99 on Oct 10, 2007 8:53 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

same old story
I still say this amounts to nothing except overblown press as usual.

by cv on Oct 10, 2007 10:43 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

You may be right
But didn't they say the same thing when the first articles about Michael Vick maybe being somehow involved with dog fighting were published?

The first big step was dispensing with the excuse that nobody was cooperating with the investigation.  Now the NCAA might be backed into a corner.

by antipimp on Oct 10, 2007 10:55 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It would seem to me he is trying
to get money out of Bush. That Michael's guy already settled and this guys talks broke down. If he talks to the NCAA how will he ever get any money?
Also the OK thing was a booster issue not an agent issue. I still say this will amount to not much or nothing for SC.

Maybe we can thank Lavin
He shows up to one SUC practice and a week later the entire evil empire starts to crumble.

Coincidence?

Wow
Quite an interesting week at the Univer$ity of $alary Cap$. That, coupled with Ben Ball about to get under way, makes the pain of our idiotic football coach almost go away.

Thats what I was going to say
I heard someone say it was horrible that Lavin showed up at a SUC practice, well, I for one DON'T WANT HIM HERE!!!!!!!!!!!

Has Cheatie Petie totally lost his mind?
What on earth could he possibly have to gain by allowing that imbicile to come within 10 miles of his alleged school?  (Unless, of course, Coach Howland's Predecessor was delivering some laundered cash to heritage hall to be used for payoffs.)

by Fox 71 on Oct 10, 2007 5:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well
Yes, he is an imbecile and annoying, but at least after the loss, he took responsibility and said that he wasn't able to sleep that night. Maybe that's a jab at KD, but at least he said it.
