Joe McDonnell. If you grew up on UCLA football when we won 8 straight and had that 20 game win streak then you know Farmer is the man. He was Cade McNown's main "go to" guy and always came through in the clutch. Unfortunately, I graduated in 2005 so you all know the era of Bruins football I had to endure. Strangely I was and am a much bigger fan before going to UCLA and since graduating than when I was there. I think it's because football is the only thing that connects me with the school now while when I was there it was only one aspect of it. Also, Karl Dorrell might have had something to do with it, but I digress. Back to Farmer.
Joe McDonnell asked Farmer point blank about Karl Dorrell. Farmer said he likes the type of kids Karl has brought in and some of them have real talent. However, Karl has been unable to develop the talent and with his 4th 5 loss season in 5 years he basically needs to go. Farmer was actually disappointed Texas A&M hired Mike Sherman because he privately thought he would have been a great hire. So while no one saw the Sherman hire coming, Farmer included, he had the foresight to see he would make a good candidate - and if Farmer believes Sherman's going to be a good coach then I do too. Now I'm a little disappointed we missed out on him.
Farmer also said he likes Dwayne Walker and this may make some people mad but so do I. Before I have said I don't like him to further the cause of firing Dorrell but when I honestly look at it Dorrell would've been fired last year if he never hired Walker. That should make me not like him since the misery would've ended sooner but the guy is a talented defensive coordinator IMO. I totally agree that he should not be our next coach but our 6 wins this year are because of him and obviously the SC game last year. Of our five losses our defense played well against ND and ASU. Even against WSU our defense kept the score close while being out there the whole game, giving our offense multiple chances to win it. There's no excuse for the Utah and Arizona games but nobody's perfect. Bo Pelini with much more talent has given up 50 to a couple teams and 30 to a few more. Plus they have a good offense to keep the defense rested. If you noticed a lot of teams have trouble stopping a good spread offense. You need good offense to beat good offense sometimes. Walker definitely has instilled a new attitude to our defense and I think he'll be a fine defensive coordinator wherever he lands.
I'll leave you with one final anecdote. I remember going to the rivalry game 4 years ago when we lost 47-22 at the Coliseum. The score was deceiving since it wasn't that close; it was over from the first snap. There was the usual traffic to get my friend's car out of the parking lot before we got back to my complex. I walked into my neighbor's apartment and just started venting about the game and how crappy Karl Dorrell was for putting our 5'10" corner on 6'5" Mike Williams instead having Matt Ware cover him. There were many other things I vented about but for some reason that one I remember. Unbeknownst to me a freshman reserve defensive lineman was in the room (How he got there before I did I do not know. I guess Karl wasn't much for post game pep talks). I was surprised because he was so small - for a defensive lineman that is, still bigger than me of course, but not by as much as you'd think. He was cool but I told him that Karl Dorrell sucked and needed to go. He responded by saying you need to give a coach more than one year. I said point blank, "No, you don't. Not when you suck that bad." I honestly believed the Dorrell experiment was going to end. When he was back for my senior year I basically lost all interest in the team. It was a far cry from the Danny Farmer days I grew up with, which were especially good since my neighbors were huge Trojan fans. Hopefully this era will finally end after the Trojans game this time.
GO BRUINS, AND GO KARL - GO FAR, FAR AWAY.
