More Coaches from Sporting News--No, No, Maybe

Now Tom Dienhart is weighing in with these possibles:

Rick Neuheisel-

"How about UCLA alum Rick Neuheisel? Those close to Neuheisel have told me that he is very interested in coaching in college again. He currently is the offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens. Neuheisel had success as head coach of Colorado and Washington. I also have learned that at least one A.D. has checked out Neuheisel through the NCAA, and all is clear. His magnetism and offensive mind could be a boost to many programs."

NO. Brought down both Wasington and Colorado programs and had a slew of NCAA violations at both schools.  Yes, he won vs the NCAA re the Basketball pool, but that was just the latest of many slip ups along the way.

Norm Chow-

NO.  No experience as a head guy and I believe too old to coach maybe a few years.  Those of you into him, back away from the "beat SC with one of their own guys--oh the irony" kool-aid, okay?

Steve Mariucci-He's my maybe on the list.  Other guys I like better, but wouldn't be too upset if he got the gig.

The first two though, no way, please DG, don't do it!

Another reason against Skippy...
... as if we needed another to go with the prior NCAA violations and the up 2 years/ down 2 years record at CU and UW:

RN is the OC at BALTIMORE???

Trust me, folks, as a guy who has had Willis McGahee and Derrick Mason on his fantasy roster this year.  The Ravens offense is NOT worth writing home about.

Don't forget, folks -- RN hired Toast as HIS offensive guru at UW.

Dude noooooooooo
shit. I was busy trying to grill some salmon on Monday (11/5) night and literally could not believe my eyes.  Baltimore got sssssssssssssssmOHHHHked and I believe I saw a single sign of life from their offense.  My bro lobbies for RickyN a lot at home, but... man, no way. NO WAY do I want ANY part of that.

Given our horrid output, that should disqualify him right there... Sorry but that's just a scary.

No to Neuheisel
But not because of the Baltimore Ravens problems...even Norm Chow would have problems with 80-year-old McNair and total bust Boller at QB. The more significant issues regarding Neuheisel as HC, it seems to me, stem from his days at Colorado and Washington, and the evidence clearly shows that he performed well initially, then his programs went downhill. That suggests either his recruiting is not as good as advertised (most likely he doesn't recruit well beyond the skill positions-everything I have seen and heard is that Skippy is one of the best at obtaining commitments from good skill players) or he just can't coach that well as HC.

Isn't Mariucci an advocate of the WCO
If that's the case, then no for sure.  But that's beside the point.  What has the guy been doing for the last decade?  Where has he coached?  What has he done to deserve to make to the list other than to be someone other than CTS?

Assuming I have bad info re the WCO, I've got nothing against him.  It's just that I've got even more nothing for him.

MOOCH
won't do it guys and the three of us KNOW it. There won't be nearly enough hardware behind his pretty curtains to exhume the corpse Toast will leave behind.  He can fundraise and commentate for us and that's about it.
GO BRUIN BLUE.

No. No and No.
  • Skippy- leaves a trail of destruction wherever he goes
  • Chow- Grumpy (but bright) offensive coach with zero personal skills. Leave him upstairs in the coaches box
  • Mooch- A cheerleader with questionable coaching ability. Mostly talk, not much substance.

Mooch is still my choice
He took a mediocre 49ers team to the playoffs in spite of a lousy lousy owner in York. And everyone knows NOBODY can win in Detroit.

And look what happened the year Ericson took over the same team- they totally tanked.  Now Ericson has breathed life into a previously down and out ASU

Mariucci will be able to draft, will keep the team motivated and will win. Look at Chetey Petey in the pros compared to at $UC and compare along with Ericson and you will see. If we can get him my vote is with Mooch.

Dad, you must be thinking of a different Mooch
or a different 49er team

Mariucci coached them in 97 to a 13-3 record, which is obviously good.  But he didn't inherit a "mediocre" 49ers team.  He took over for Seifurt, and Seafurt's teams did really really well.  The stats:

1989 - 14-2 regular season, Super Bowl winners
1990 - 14-2 regular season, Lost NFC championship game
1991 - 10-6 (no playoffs)
1992 - 14-2, Lost NFC championship game
1993 - 10-6, Lost NFC championship game
1994 - 13-3, Super Bowl winners
1995 - 14-2, Lost NFC championship game

Darn it - I did it again - sheesh
1995 - 11-6 lost first round
1996 - 12-4 lost NFC championship

Mariucci'a cupboard wasn't bare.  But by 1999 his team went 4-12.

I STILL like Mooch
Mr Fox,

I don't believe that I have any chance in an argument with a seasoned expert anf an attorney such as yourself, but here are my two cents.

Mariucci had 2 bad years with the 49ers, 99 and 2000 agreed. He also had some pretty good years going to thr NC Championship game and repeatedly making the playoffs (and NOT with Seiferts talent)
With the same talent at the outset, Ericson went on to post a 9 -23 record.

I get it that you don't like Mooch, but taking a look at what he did with the same talent as Ericson shows me that he could do well in Westwood- look at what Ericson has done at ASU.

He has pro experience, which I believe is important, he has college experience, he's not a kid but not an old fart either and...

I really believe he is within our budget.

Mediocre was probably too harsh
I just meant that with Young at the end of his career, the team Mooch inherited was not the dominating 49ers of the 80's- definitely better than mediocre.

It's not that I don't like Mariucci
It's just that I don't like him.  He's had one season coaching college players.  He started that season 6-0, and ended 1-6.  His overall record is not that much better than CTS's.  Leaving out Detroit, he NFL record is 60-43, which is almost exactly the same as CTS's.  And from what I understand, he likes the WCO.

I don't see Mariucci as being a significant improvement over CTS.  He doesn't seem to me to be the "home run" hire that we're looking for.  And his track record says that this is not his dream job.  He had one mediocre year at Cal and then immediately went to the NFL.  My guess is that he would look at the UCLA job as just another temporary stop on the way back to the NFL.

I don't think he would turn our team into a consistent top ten team, assuming he would stay long enough.

After Detroit
I don't see Mooch getting an NFL Head Coaching gig any time soon. Still I think my comparison of Mooch to Ericson makes some sense- same players different results.

You may be right about this not being his dream job, but the same thing might have been said about Cheatey Petey a few years ago.

Not to belabor this point- we can agree to disagree- I think MOST of the candidates being put forth here are going to be a huge improvement over CTS so whether it is Mooch, Spurrier or another QUALIFIED HC, I have a lot of faith in DG to improve football as he has done in basketball and baseball.

About Cal
Another minor point

Mooch went 6and 6 in his one year at Cal

His predacessor went 20 and 26 and his replacement went 16 and 39- Just wanted to throw that in.

If we get him, I sure hope you are right
Even if we sign Mrs. Mariucci instead, we would still be light years ahead of where we are now.

Coaching search
Look, even Fox71 would agree with this, if he can get off the golf course long enough to take this in.....

DG will do, IMO, a proper coaching search, that may be going on to some extent now. He will contact the right help, as in recruiters, evaluate 10-12 candidates, filter it down to 3 or so, and then have detailed discussions with them. If RN, or DW survive that search and either are the choice, with all the parameters involved on both the school and candidate side, then I would support this hire. DG will do it right and make the best decision possible at the time of the search. I firmly believe this will be the most important decision of his tenure so far at UCLA. There is more revenue involved in football, more exposure and risk with SC in the same town, and it has to be done right. He knows that and will handle it correctly. Rest assured.

Only time for a quick comment
Rushing in on my way to the 15th green - yeah, Bill, I hope you're right.  Gotta go - my turn to putt.

Talking about coaching search
how about Jimmy Johnson ?  He has impeccable credentials both at the NCAA & NFL levels.

Got to keep getting the word out
Signed up my daughter for softball and met a guy with a UCLA visor.  Asked him about the game.  Wanted us to go 0-3 to ge rid of KD.

Then I asked who he wanted for head coach.  Neuheisal.  I mentioned all the trouble he had gotten into.  Oh no, he responded, he's a great guy.  Went to school with him, said another.  And then the other guy said he would want Norm Chow.  I mentioned he had never been a head coach, didn't phase him at all.

I've said it before and I will say it again, we need KD out before the SC game, because with fans like these, I swear to you, if he beats SC, all will be forgetten for these guys and they'll point at the injuries and lobby for one more year for the guy.

He cannot be allowed to coach against SC unless by some miracle he beats Oregon.

by Free the 16 on Nov 11, 2007 9:15 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I think a win-win
would be DG firing KD after the Oregon loss, and allowing him to coach the final game against SUC.  For the players, wanting to win one last game for KD could also lead to the their most inspired game of the year.
