A List of Acceptable Candidates

Okay, so after reading various posts, I felt it necessary to compose a list of candidates and organize it according to the desirability of the candidate. My reason for doing so is simple: there are too many names being tossed around. Everyone has their own "short lists" of candidates, but none of them are identical. So based off the names I have seen thrown around (and believe me, I've seen a lot) I have compiled this list. My list is NOT based on any particular data. Nor did I use any break through research methods to come to my conclusion. I simply used my better judgement based off the names I have seen and the criticism surrounding those names. I do not claim that my list is infallible and that it is the ONLY list in existence. This is the best I could come up with given time I have available(I am a student and its finals week), so hopefully this list puts us one step closer to coming to an agreement. One more thing, the names on my list reflect current media reports. That is to say, I have not listed candidates that have outright shotdown the notion of coming to UCLA, and candidates that were recently hired.

1st Rate Candidates: These guys have previous head coaching experience, have demonstrated exellence in one way or another, and have shown the adequate consistency in their work. In short, the announcement of their name as our new head coach would bring us a great sigh of relief.

Steve Spurrier
Bronco Mendenhall
Mike Leach
Steve Mariucci
Pat Hill
Brian Kelly

2nd Rate Candidates: These guys have previous head coaching experience, have also demonstrated excellence in one way or another, but either have a couple of knocks on their resume or have not demonstrated sufficient consistency in their performace, which would make us suspicious of their hiring.

Rick Neuheisel
Jim Fassel
Terry Bowden
Jim E. Mora

Non Candidates: These guys either have no previous head coaching experience, have not demonstrated sufficient consistency, or both. Fittingly, the possibility of them becoming our next head football coach should NOT even be entertained.

Norm Chow
Dewayne Walker
Rich Brooks

Like I said, my list is not meant to be the final word. I'm sure there are some candidates I left out. However, my purpose for posting this diary was to gague where the Bruin Community stood on particular candidates. Ultimately, I would like to see a short list of candidates that MOST of us could agree on. As I have stated before, I believe that we should consider every possible candidate but not without careful analysis. That said, let me hear what you have to say.
