ESPN: Mendenhall via "intermediaries"

Now, I'm starting to think I've seen everything:

The main blurb is about Chow, but check this note (boldface added):

UCLA has contacted Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow and invited him to interview for its vacant head coaching position as soon as this weekend.

The news was first reported by The Los Angeles Times on its Web site on Wednesday night and confirmed to ESPN's Joe Schad by a person briefed on the school's plans.

Schad Wednesday also confirmed that UCLA, through intermediaries, has attempted to gauge the interest of BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall.

If this is true, and DG is aware of this, then you HAVE to admire DG's sheer chutzpah on this.  How many teams looking for a head coach would out and out try to gauge the interest of the guy trying to BEAT THEM in their next game, and in a Bowl game no less?

I know, I know -- Bronco is a defensive specialist himself, so that may mean we lose DW and his recruiting prowess...

... then again, while I have no problem with DW staying on as a DC if the HC wants him to, (a) a Bronco hire doesn't necessarily mean DW would leave, and (b) I think having  a coach who's posted two 10-win seasons in his first 3 years as HC (like my still-favorite Petersen at BSU) makes a pretty good recruiting draw.

Anyway, just a thought.
