Walker vs. Kerr

I seem to remember that at the beginning of KD's tenure we actually had a decent defense, though still a horrible offense. So I went back and looked at the 2003 and 2004 seasons to compare them to this last season. Here are the main statistics:

2003
Points per game 23.5
Touchdowns allowed 37
Field goals 16
First downs 223
Rush yards per game 116.9
Pass yards per game 200.7
Average yard per play 4.6
Fumbles recovered 12
Interceptions 19
Sacks 30
3rd down percentage 33%

2004
Points per game 25.8
Touchdowns allowed 37
Field goals 17
First downs 256
Rush yards per game 210.1
Pass yards per game 222.8
Average yard per play 5.8
Fumbles recovered 5
Interceptions 14
Sacks 20
3rd down percentage 36%

2007
Points per game 22.8
Touchdowns allowed 33
Field goals 14
First downs 235
Rush yards per game 115.4
Pass yards per game 234.3
Average yard per play 4.6
Fumbles recovered 12
Interceptions 13
Sacks 36
3rd down percentage 28%

The reason I picked 2003 and 2004 is because the offense then was just as bad as this last year. 2004 was horrible but 2003 was a good year for our defense...and those are Larry Kerr numbers! So really...we haven't gone very far in terms of our defense, have we. In a lot of respects, the 2003 defense was similar or better. The 3rd down % is misleading, IMO, because you don't need a 3rd down if you can get a first down on 2nd down (note how many more first downs were allowed).

By the way, guess where Larry Kerr is coaching now...DUKE! He is the Inside Linebacker Coach & Spec. Teams Coordinator. He just might be reunited with KD, who was apparently popular with Duke's search committee and athletics director Joe Alleva after meetings on Monday...
