Quick heads up...
ESPN GameDay is doing a feature on Darren Collison and his speedy family.

by Sweetbreads Bailey on Mar 3, 2007 8:25 AM PST reply actions

It was pretty good...
Collison's parents seem like really nice people.  Mom Collison talks about wanting her son to follow in their footsteps on the track, and she wonders what could have been...

Sorry Ma, but I think Darren made the right decision...I know he did for us!

"last open game thread for the season"?
Uhh... did I miss something?
I'll take that as the last open game thread for the REGULAR season... or something like that.

The downside of a kick-ass team
Now that BH and the boys have put UCLA Basketball in it's rightful place, our gear is becoming more popular.  There is a downside......check out this yahoo wearing those magical letters.  Have a laugh (however there is a derogatory term at the end)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1naIU9rAII&mode=related&search=

I thought about not posting this because of the end, but for those of us in Westwood in the 80's, this song rubs a nerve.....

Saw Chace Stanback on FSN
High School Spotlight show.

He is the best non-Mcdonalds All-American I've EVER SEEN!!!!!

6-8, Great B-Ball IQ, really good defender, above average 3 point shot, good dribble, and Unselfish to the tune of 30pts 6 assts. WOW he is really good.

Reminds me of Tayshaun Prince...AS A COLLEGE PLAYER!!

It will be tough to keep him off the court trust me.

Unselfish
is a word we've all been using in the BH era.

It's a hallmark of the coach and team.

Unselfish allows us to play deep.

It's not the fouls
It's the other calls that goes against them that they cry too much about, like the UW player dropping the pass out of bounds and they're crying about that call. That's just stupid.

put the bench in heavy rotation.  Florida went throughthe same letdown after winning SEC.  That hurt their rep nationally because everyone saw their lack of effort. If we're gonna half-ass it, put in Westbrook and Co. and let 'em rip

Really CBS announcer?  They just wrapped up the pac10 and played an intense game v. top 10 wsu?  Consider the reasons instead of looking at the score.  Otherwise its not commentary, but blind analysis.

Why was he waiting so long to run the last play, and why was it to Luc on the perimeter?  D-Mac is right in saying that Luc has made it before but I can think of someone else who would be more ideal to get the ball to in that situation.

Stanford
Ever since Collison shot too early at the end of the first half against Stanford his end of the half plays have been terrible. He runs the clock too far down to do something and he either shoots a tough 3 or passes it to someone with a couple seconds to go to jack up an even worse shot.

by UCLA4Life on Mar 3, 2007 11:58 AM PST up reply actions

Unfortunately
this is going down like each of our previous losses. Other team makes a half ending run. Nevertheless, I think we still need to continue to play the bench.

by Tydides on Mar 3, 2007 11:54 AM PST reply actions

Collison was terrible
Last possession and a terrible play. UW on a 10-0 run to end the half. UCLA hasn't matched UW's intensity. Of course, it would help if they get a few calls in their favor for once. No way UW should not have been in the penalty. Ridiculous they only had 5 fouls the way the refs were calling the touch fouls on the Bruins.

by UCLA4Life on Mar 3, 2007 11:54 AM PST reply actions

The starters have to play like starters
or they should be pulled.

They either have to play to win -- or if we are going to give the game away, let's use it to get time for the subs.

sjh

by Class of 66 on Mar 3, 2007 11:57 AM PST reply actions

I'd be in favor
of the all bench rotation. I really want some of them to get some PT so they can contribute later on. Seth Davis just said it in the studio, I think our guys know that this game likely doesn't affect our seeding/region and they're playing like it.

by Tydides on Mar 3, 2007 11:58 AM PST reply actions

Yep
we proved everything we needed to on Thursday.  DC had more pt this time last year than Westbrook does this year.  Have him clock those minutes and make up for the WV game.

by sausmaf on Mar 3, 2007 12:01 PM PST up reply actions

Adjustments
I still expect UCLA to come out in the second half with a different intensity. I don't expect the big 3 to shoot so badly in the second half. Collison needs to get AA involved early in the offense. And what's with Dentmon practically grabbing AA on defense and the crowd crying when he makes separation?

by UCLA4Life on Mar 3, 2007 12:00 PM PST reply actions

I'm all about playing the bench but....
the abnoxious looks on those Huskies faces look like they're begging for an ass kicking. It's time to unleash it. I know if UW wins they'll act like they won the tourney and that little bitch Applebee will embarass himself.

by True Blue and Gold on Mar 3, 2007 12:01 PM PST reply actions

Who cares about the Huskies
they're going to the NIT, so let them act however they want to act, because for this year, they are irrelevant.

by Tydides on Mar 3, 2007 12:05 PM PST up reply actions

Our commercial sucks
it's too much like the Cal commercial years back. A commercial that says nothing about the university.

by UCLA4Life on Mar 3, 2007 12:06 PM PST reply actions

I would play deep
and let them play with intensity.

I think they can win the game.

Right now, no one is getting anything out of this game.

This may also give us a reason to step up and play hard in the Pac 10 tourney. To continue like this -- for the swtarters -- is embarassing even if understandable.

UCLA still needs to do a better job of defending the post. Hawes and Brockman are getting in good position to work.

by UCLA4Life on Mar 3, 2007 12:13 PM PST reply actions

But it hardly matters - yea, UCLA had that shot at the end but 3 minutes of hustle doesn't absolve them of the game - it was a terrible game. If we stepped it up at, say, the 10 minute mark instead of the 5 minute then a victory would've been easy.

Did anyone else think DC was fouled on the drive just before he turned it over on the baseline. And that it should have been a jump ball when hawes first went to the line.

For whatever reason
We do not play well on the road on Saturdays. Get your head on straight before the NCAAs Shipp.

As annoying as they sounded
they didn't rush the court.  i guess they realized they didn't really beat the #2 team

by sausmaf on Mar 3, 2007 1:06 PM PST reply actions

Oh well....
At least it wasn't as excruciating to watch as last nights Laker game.

by alcor805 on Mar 3, 2007 1:08 PM PST reply actions

BIG difference between the 2 games
UCLA plays defense. The Lakers don't even try to play defense.

by UCLA4Life on Mar 3, 2007 1:11 PM PST up reply actions

One of the dumber games we've played
At least it didn't really mean much to us. Let's use this as our "SC Debacle" of 2007 to run the table the rest of the year. You know Ben is gonna be drilling into his team for the many stupid decisions we made today.

by Tydides on Mar 3, 2007 1:09 PM PST reply actions

Oh well...
A disappointing game, but UW was playing the game of their lives to stay in tournament contention and they still could have lost to a team that was shooting probably the worst I've seen this season (WVU could have been just as bad). I'mhoping this is the game that spurs them onto a big run like last year's loss to SUC.

IT BOILS DOWN TO THIS...
(1)  If DC and Shipp play smart, we win.

(2)  If they don't, oh boyyy...

The guys read too much of their own press.  Don't doubt for a second that BH is going to go pat Riley/ Bataan Death March on these guys in practice this week tog et that arrogance and compalcency out of their system.

If this has to be the last kick-in-the-butt before the Tournament to get our guys to stop:

-- throwing lazy passes,

-- jacking up dumb-ass shots,

-- losing their guys on defense,

-- half-assing their box-outs, and

-- stop going for glory points rather than sensible shots (yeah, DC, I'm talking about you and your failtue to pass to the Captain) ...

... then so be it.

Mata working inside was good.

Russell sparking the team was good.

Arron's will and fire, as always, were good.

No further injuries (as far as we can tell) were GREAT.

Rest up, study up, heal up, D up.

Next week is the last set of quizzes before Finals.

GET TO FREAKING WORK.

Great Post
If the players use this as they did the SUC game last year, then today can only help us in the long term. The biggest area for concern right now is our wildcards, Shipp and at times DC. Today, both of them played outside of the game, and while this has been a rarity for DC this season, Shipp's frequency of stupid plays had been steadily decreasing until this game.

I don't see this particular set of events occurring at the same time in another game this season, but if they could eliminate the stupid decisions altogether, then we would really have something.

Totally agree with you
I am really worried about Shipp in the tournament

what a
great summary of what needs to be done this week at practice.  well written..

Wow,
You guys really cared about this game a lot more than I did.

I just didn't want anybody to get hurt.

In That Regard
We clearly won vs injuries today.

by alcor805 on Mar 3, 2007 1:20 PM PST up reply actions

Honestly
It was hard for me to get into it too, because I knew in the back of my mind that in the long term, this game didn't mean anything. I guess our players felt the same way. I'd have been happy if they surprised me with a WSU effort, but I guess if I can't get up for it, then our players probably had similar problems.

Good of Ben to hold Aboya out of the game. We need him for the stretch run far more than a meaningless regular season game.

My concern is just so that we stay a No. 1.
As long as we're a No. 1 seed in the REAL Tournament, we're on our way.

The kicker is that if we had won this game, IMO, we wouldn't have needed to win the Toruanment outright to leave no doubt for No.1 in the West, without getting shipped anywhere.

Now, I'm thinking we need at least TWO solid wins in the Tourney to lock that up.  If Florida, Kansas, UNC, and OSU or Wisconsin all get hot in their respective conference tournaments, there could be some jockeying for No. 1 seeds.

Tournament
I don't think both Wisconsin and OSU are gonna be #1 seeds. One or the other, but not both.

by UCLA4Life on Mar 3, 2007 1:29 PM PST up reply actions

They're locked in to #1 in the West
And win one game in the Pac Ten tourney and they're #1 overall.  The conference RPI, team RPI, SOS, and 9-1 record against the top 25 is unmatchable by anybody else.  The selection committee cares about the portfolio.

We're in good shape.

by Sweetbreads Bailey on Mar 3, 2007 1:30 PM PST up reply actions

Not to mention
all the other teams in consideration for #1 are nowhere close to the West. As the only "elite" squad west of the Rockies, we're pretty much guaranteed to be in the West with our 1 seed. The only question now is how we will be ranked among the #1's. The overall #1 would really be nice because we'd get the "worst" 2 seed in our bracket, but in order to secure that, we would probably have had to get 2 or 3 wins in the Pac 10 Tournament to seal that up anyway, regardless of what happened today.

Expectations
I still expected the Bruins to be playing with a certain level of consistency this late in the season. Bozeman was a solid defender last season and contributed occassionally on offense. Shipp is counted on for offensive support and sometimes he makes some real boneheaded plays (like that lazy dribble off his leg in the last game). He still hasn't shown the focus that he had as a freshman. Same with Collison. He has played great most of the season but there are times he calls his number too much when he should pass it off to someone. That and the over-dribbling shows that he still has some things to work on. Mata has played a lot better the last few weeks. I guess that injury was a lot more serious than I thought when Mata looked terrible. Luc Richard hasn't been as consistent a force as I thought. He really hasn't expanded much on his game. Hopefully he can turn it up now that it's tournament time.

After mailing it in ....
After mailing it in today, three points --
  1. This is the point in the season when our guys should be eager for red meat (i.e., wins against teams like Washington). I didn't see it today.
  2. I thought the WSU game was indicative that we were ready to roll and were developing momentum that is necessary to carry us through the NCAA tourney. We need a big time effort in PAC 10 Tourney -- to put us into the right frame of mind for the NCAA tourney.
  3. If we don't win the PAC 10 tourney, I don't think we'll get a No. 1 seed in the NCAA.

by uclagradscdad on Mar 3, 2007 1:45 PM PST reply actions

You're out of your mind
You need to keep in mind that the other candidates for 1 seeds, with the exception of Kansas, have had far more stumbles down the home stretch than we have. Our resume before these past two weeks has been more impressive than the rest as well.

We might need a big time effort in the Pac 10 Tournament as you say from the standpoint of momentum, but the 1 seed is pretty much ours, because the other teams out there have given up the rights to it.

If we lose to Cal/OSU
we'll be 26-5. That will be good enough for a one. If we lose in the second round we'll be 27-5 w/ an addition loss to UA/Ou.  That will definetly be good enough for a one, perhaps #1 overall.  If we make the final we'll be 28-5.  The only way Ohio St. is #1 overall instead is if they win out or lose Oregon-Oklahoma style to Wisconsin in the Big 10 final.

... I don't want to leave it to chance.

WIN OUT.

NINE WINS = 12 TITLES.
