Around SBN: Knicks 90, Raptors 87: "Shump and Lin wouldn't let us lose."

Attention UCLA Band - The outcome of this game is dependent on you

Hopefully you got the message from my Deadspin preview, but if you didn't:

DO NOT PLAY 'CARRY ON MY WAYWARD SON' ON SATURDAY! In case you didn't know, it's originally by the band Kansas. And we are playing Kansas.

Even though we knocked off #1 Kansas in January 2002, when you played that song, I was blown away by the complete lack of realization that you are essentially cheering for our opponent.

I know it's one of your favorite songs to play, so I'm sorry that I'm asking you to swallow your trombones for one game, but I'll let you make up for it by playing it twice in the final 4 game, k.

And for whoever was in charge of the music at the Rose Bowl in 2002 and 2004....thanks for pumping in "Machinehead" over and over while Reggie BUSH was running for 5000 yards against us.

Lets stop being stupid. Make the connections people!

Otherwise, Hi Nestor, I finally signed up.  I felt that I had to get this message out because it will truly be the X factor in Saturday's game. If the band plays that song, we will lose. Don't screw this up!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

I'll send the memo to the band...
When I see them tonight...we'll see if they follow suit. Plus I know there are a few of them reading from San Jose.

As a member of the UCLA band...
...and as a UCLA student and Bruin fan going to the Elite Eight game this Saturday, I must say that I am very disappointed in your diary post, TheTJCummingsEra.

In case YOU didn't know, we have an excellent basketball team.

Do you really think that if the UCLA Varsity Band plays a certain song that happens to have been written and performed by a band that happens to be named "Kansas" that our team will lose?  You think that the players will hear 'Carry On' and feel betrayed and play poorly?

You must have very little faith in our Bruins to make such a superstitious request.

You're making connections that, if we thought about anything enough, anyone could make about anything.  For example, our fight song, "We Are the Mighty Bruins," was written for us by Bill Conti who went to LSU.  We played LSU last year in the Final Four... maybe we should not have played our fight song at that game?

But wait, we won that game.

Let's stop being superstitious.  Have faith in our Bruins, cheer hard, and let the UCLA Varsity Band play the songs that we all know and love to help the Bruins have some fun on our way to the Final Four.

Completely agree with belly dude
or dudette. The band should play whatever it wants, God knows they work hard enough.

Not only that, but Cummings dude contradicts himself...says when the band played it in January 2002 (it was the 12th and it was right after we had lost to U$C), Kansas was ranked #1 and we beat them. HELLOOOOO!!! Kansas is seeded #1 now! Friggin' play that song over and over again!!!

We all have our superstitions...but keep them to yourself. Don't go making THE WHOLE BAND comply to your own insanity. I'm not making the players rub Ben-Gay on their balls.

Don't say I didn't warn you
Go ahead and do what you want, obviously I can't change your decision.

I'm not really asking for much. No need to get your panties in a bunch.

Don't you cry no more!
That's for the Jayhawks! Don't you cry no more after Ben's boys have left you bloodied and given you the most bitter loss of the year. Carry on...your bags home. :)

Not asking for much?
Just asking the band to change what we do at every game.

How about we play Carry On after we've won the game just to rub it in their faces.

Also, the band Kansas is from Topeka, Kansas.
The University of Kansas is in Lawrence, Kansas.
That's a 30 minute drive, so I think we'll be okay.

I'm more old school
I would go with Ray Charles' "Georgia on My Mind" (although it's not exactly a rocking song).

Exactly
see now this is the creativity I'm talking about! Great call.  I'm sure the band has some Ludacris in its repertoire!  Welcome to Atlanta where the playas play!

well
What about us playing the Offspring's "come out and play"?  For those of you who dont know, the lead singer is from southern cal.  We play it pretty much every game, yet we've been beating sc.  Meanwhile, we dont play any Bad Religion songs, whose lead singer is both a UCLA alumn (PhD) AND professor of biology at UCLA (LS 1).

We should play Bad Religion songs though
Bad Religion is awesome.

If we win
I want the band to learn the bassline to "Welcome to Atlanta"- PERFECT song for the Final 4 (** $C)

Thanks, sj
I had forgotten totally about the great debate.  Whatever you played worked.

And by the way, the band got quite a bit of air time.  Maybe it's just school pride, but our band members look a little better than other bands.  More clean cut.  The women are prettier.  The guys are handsomer (or so I'm told - I couldn't comment on that part (not that there's anything wrong with that.))  And the two or three measures of music that we were able to hear was, as usual, better than any other band.

Make sure to take the same music with you to Atlanta!
