Holy Crap Ohio State

Has anyone paid attention to OSU's basketball recruiting?  I saw mention of this on a UNC board, checked it out, and could not believe my eyes.

Next year's class:

5 stars: 1
4 stars: 4

This class includes 7ft (or 7'2 depending who you ask) PF Kosta Koufos who has 3-point range as one of his strengths :P

2008 class:

5 stars: 4
4 stars: 1

This class includes the #2 PG, #7 PF, #2 C (another 7 footer), and the #3 and #19 SG.

I mean, wow.  That's some recruiting they got going on.  Definitely not what I expected out of Ohio State.  They weren't even on the map in 2005, then they score a monster class in 2006 which was ranked #2 by scout behind North Carolina, and now they've got the 9th ranked class next year, and what I would have to assume is the #1 class in 2008.  That class would probably be the starting lineup of most other schools, they've got every position filled if they just shift one of their SG to SF.  I just hope they all go to the NBA and don't do anything stupid like pull a Florida.

well
Well, given they last lost their status with the NCAA due to recruiting violations... and then there were the football issues just a couple years back...

They also
Just recruit a bunch of 1 year wonders.  No way all of these people commit with the understanding that they might have to sit for a year.  Look at this year's class and how they are all going pro.  Expect more of the same, every year from now on.

Stupid David Stern
He was ruining the NBA before, and now he had to pollute the NCAA too. What the f#@k is the point of that one-year rule? It is STUPID! If you want to make a rule, make it at least 2 years. Or make it none. It is idiotic. I know some people say "ooh, at least we got to watch them play for one year". I disagree, that did nothing for me, just like Rico Suave's hit didn't do anything for me.

It helps the NBA
People now know who Oden and Durant are, so they can be better used for marketing.  And there will probably be less people like Darius Miles.

But two years would be much better

absolutely, it is the perfect solution for the NBA
Coming out of high school, these kids are pretty much unknown players. They may be projected to be top players athletically, but the draft was quickly becoming a random crapshoot. Now with this new minimum age rule, they get to see what these players can actually do in real baketball competition. This will make the draft more meaningful for all the teams involved. Also, NBA scouts do not have to follow a billion high school games and countless number of high schools that exist. Now they can keep  their eyes on a couple of hundred colleges. It will however have the negative effect of increasing  college player turnover, as well as more chaos with players checking in and out in one year.

This was brilliant in part of Stern!

The "One Year" rule is absurd
There seems to be little point in forcing a basketball prodigy to play for a college team for a year.  (I said "play for a college team" rather than "attend college" on purpose.)  Coach Knight has some very strong thoughts on this - he's for two years minimum.

I assume this is an NBA rule, not an NCAA rule.  So I have a thought for the NCAA guys.  Since the organization is set up to deal with "collegiate" athletics, how about allowing a school x number of four-year scholarships.  If a kid attends only one year, then the remaining three years of that scholarship don't get used.  Thus, Timmeh gets OJ2 for one year, but can't use OJ2's scholarship for the next three years.

Something like that would be an incentive to coaches to hire, I mean give scholarships to kids who are going to stay the whole time.

It's not just the NBA (or NFL).  If a kid flunks out then his scholarship is gone, too.  That, of course, would be a MAJOR problem over at Figueroa Tech, where their "student athletes" are continually falling by the wayside as a result of that grueling academic regimen.

That's my modest proposal.

It is an NBA rule
and they have no interest in keeping the real stars out for two years.  The problem with your idea is that only a few coaches will recruit these one and done players, so it may develop into a few teams competing in four year intervals.  Perhaps they could make the players sign two year contracts with the NCAA?  Would that be legal, lawyers?

College
I don't think that anyone should be forced to attend college... No one prevented 14-year old Katie Hoff from joining the olympic swim team, or made her wait 5 more years until she had completed one year of college.  If that were the case, she still wouldn't have competed yet.  I think she's 17..
So why the heck should these guys have to join a college team for one year?
I agree with Fox71.  It definitely seems like it's just the NBA setting up for better marketing..

How much is Katie Hoff being paid?
And I don't think the NBA is denying that this is all for marketing.

No idea
And I'm sure the NBA isn't denying anything.  Additionally, I'm sure the athletes don't mind putting in one year of college hoops assuming that it'll boost their salary once they go pro.  I just think the whole system is somewhat riduculous.

College
They actually don't even have to go to college. They just have to hit the age qualification set by the NBA Collective bargaining agreement.

I think
It has to have been one year since their class graduated from high school.  So they can go to prep school (Tyreke Evans might do that), they could play in Europe, or they could go barnstorming (JuiceDeuce was considering that).

Please explain...
How KLove is getting all the POY awards from around the country, but according to Scout.com, he is only the number 3 player.

Juice Bread Spread is #1.

Mayo has excuses
He switched teams (unexpectedly I might add) so his poor performance in the AAU circuit could be attributed to that.  Same for high school.  Since he has been #1 ever since they held him back in 6th grade (from SI a long time ago) they probably gave him the benefit of the doubt.  Meanwhile Love has been the best player in the country since last summer, so he gets the awards.

Is it Gordon that's #2?  If so, it may be that scout.com is doing this in terms of NBA prospects, so they may not think Love will be as good in the NBA as the scoring guards they have ahead of him.
