Olson Named Starting QB

Karl Dorrell just announced to Bruin Report Online that Olson is going to be the starting quarterback. He said Olson has performed better than Cowan in practice so far and the coaches felt now was the right time to announce the starter so everyone will know where they stand.  He says he expects them both to get a lot of snaps in practice.

This is the decision that had to be made and thankfully it was.  I am happy Dorrell named Olson the starter already, because I could not frankly handle the thought of Cowan opening as our starter. I think Olson would have been insulted if he had to go through another QB competition this spring. Obviously, Olson is the more talented passer and I think he is going to have a good season for us. Cowan is a decent backup quarterback, but I do not think many of us want to see him get on the field this upcoming season. I am hearing really good things about Norvell's offense so far and I think we will take advantage of Olson's good arm this year. Karl reiterated that expectations are high for this season. The offense needs to be sharper, but they are getting there day by day. The defense is already looking top notch and I expect them to one of the top defensive units in the country next year. It is time to start meeting expectations. No more excuses. And it will be up to Ben Olson to steer the ship.

That's the first piece of good news
I've heard so far.  I like Cowan but he's not a starter, not yet.  Now BO needs to stay healthy and work on those short passing routes.  Too many throws behind the receiver or down at the knees last year.

"The Cleveland Browns
hired hot, up-and-coming NFL head coaching prospect Karl Dorrell, fresh off a national championship-winning season at UCLA, who leaves behind Heisman-hopeful Ben Olson and a top-recruiting class in 2008."

We can dream, can't we?

"In other news...
Southern California was stripped of its mythical 2004 and 2005 BCS National Championship, placed on three years probation and made ineligible for bowl games through 2010 for multiple recruiting violations and benefits given to former players"

Oooh this is fun!
"OJ Mayo was ejected late in the second half of Southern California's blowout loss to Arizona St. at the Galen center, after he threw the ball into the stands and cursed at a Pac-10 official. Tim Floyd was ejected shortly afterwords when he ripped off his shirt and threw it on the court. The loss dropped the hapless Trojans into last place."

Back from commerical break ...
"A quaterback controversy is developing around Steve Sarkasian's Trojan football program (which imploded this past season after failing to defend its Pac-10 title and losing Carroll to the NFL).

Apparently Mitch Mustain, the transfer QB from Arkansas (who got his head coach fired) has given an ultimatum to Coach Sark that he is announced as the starting QB of the team, after Booty had another disappointing season culminating with a second straight loss to UCLA."

This thread has potential
"OJ Mayo received a sternly-worded reprimand from school administrators, but no suspension from the basketball team, after it was discovered that he had only registered  for one class, taught by Senora Rosa, but had not yet actually attended any classes by the end of the first semester.

When asked for comment, Mayo (through one of his five agents) indicated that 'he didn't come to college to attend no classes.'  Further calls to Mayo's cell phone were not immediately returned."

Wait...
Do we want KD to leave if we win a national championship? I hadn't thought about that...

I wouldn't shed any tears
if KD left under any circumstance. But that's me.

What I wouldn't give for that
well, either Dorrell makes it happen or we get someone else who will bring us back to the possibility of a national championship.

In related news
Semor Rosa was named "Educator of the Year" for her innovative methods of teaching college athletes.

Several of her past students (all had the day off from McDonalds) were there to thank her for helping them to secure a position in the fast food industry.

trojan news in brief
oj mayo did not play the first 10 minutes of the second half of the trojan's 30-point home loss to Oregon State because Tim Floyd was unable to contact mayo's courtside agent to get word to him that he should re-enter the game.

"It was my own fault," said Floyd.  "I am supposed to call a minimum of 10 minutes ahead of time in order for the agent to get word to o.j... I mean Mr. Mayo... that a play has changed or that he needs to be on the court.  I forgot the rules, and Mr. Mayo was entirely within his rights to throw a shoe at me."

In spite of this latest incident, Floyd insisted that he is "thrilled" to have mayo on his team, adding that he "seems like a decent young man" and that he "would like to meet him one day."

No more trips to Westwood
"In an effort to discourage students from visiting Westwood Village every weekend, school administrators announced that efforts were being made to bring attention to the landmarks and boutique establishements around campus so that students would spend their trust fund monies closer to school.

'There is nothing better than sipping on a 40 while standing on the corner in front of the Felix Chevrolet dealership on a Friday night,' said one administrator, who asked not to be identified in print.  'There is plenty to do right by school, if you don't mind all the bars on the windows of the homes and stores.  Plus, there is no better location to score cheap concert tickets than from the scalpers located right under the Felix the Cat sign across from campus'

It is unknown whether the school's efforts had made any effect at the time this article went to print."

This is exactly why I haven't needed the
fishwrap in decades.  Do you get this kind of writing in the 'wrap.  Nope.

The cleverness exhibited here in one day is more than will surface in the fishwrap in 10 years.
