Around SBN: Two Minutes Of Thunder Basketball Wins The Game

Revenge

The baseball team got its revenge against UCI. Bruins rally again to pick up a 4-2 win in Irvine and avenge a loss they suffered against the 'Eaters earlier in the season.:

Third baseman Jermaine Curtis' three-run blast in the fourth inning helped lead the No. 22 UCLA baseball team past No. 12 UC Irvine, 4-2, Tuesday evening at Anteater Ballpark. Curtis finished 1-for-4 with one run, three RBI and his second home run in UCLA's last four games. Second baseman Alden Carrithers hit 3-for-5 with one run.

The Bruins (25-18) have won 17 of their last 21 games and have tallied victories in seven of their last eight road contests.

Freshman right-hander Garett Claypool (2-0) picked up the victory after limiting the host Anteaters to two runs off five hits through five innings. UC Irvine right-hander Dylan Axelrod (2-3) absorbed the loss, allowing four runs off five hits in 4.2 innings. Bruin left-hander Tim Murphy notched his first career save, striking out five hitters in 2.1 innings of relief.

The Bruins' fourth-inning rally began with two outs. Designated hitter Casey Haerther doubled to right-center field and moved to third on catcher Ryan Babineau's single. Curtis battled from an 0-and-2 count, fouling off two pitches, taking a ball and fouling off three more pitches before belting a three-run shot over the left field fence. The Bruins added one more run in the fourth on consecutive singles by Alden Carrithers, Brandon Crawford and Cody Decker.
Next up: Cal. Bruins take on the Bears for a weekend series starting Friday night.

First pitch scheduled for 6 pm PST.

A note
Former Bruin Ben Francisco made his major league debut with the Indians last night. This makes him the 9th former Bruins currently in the majors. Congratulations Ben and good luck. I'm sure you'll make us all proud.

How do the rankings work
Weren't we #19 last week, and then we took 2 of 3 from #12 Arizona...how did we fall to 22?

Unlike football and basketball
where there are only 2 major polls, in baseball there are a lot of them. The most trusted and widely used one is Baseball America and last week we were #25 in that poll and this week we are #22. We were #18 in the Collegiate Baseball poll last week so I used that one because that's the one we were ranked highest in. It depends on whcih poll you check.
