My Terrible Mistake

I recently made a comment on BN that was poorly worded and  not well thought out. If you remember, there was a person on here that asked for some pointers for a debate he was in regarding the merits of UCLA and USC.

I gave a few points that were not that great, but I said one thing that was not such a good idea. I made the statement that "Trojans are pedophiles".

Now, in my little ol' noggin this statement was fairly innocuous because I knew exactly what I meant. In these three words, I was trying to reference Trojans as historical figures. They were known to have sex slaves and sometimes these slaves were young males. I was, in my mind, knocking their mascot as a pedophile.

But where was my mind at the time? As I read that statement again I cringe. I'm so painfully unclear at what I'm referencing it is ridiculous. My statements were interpreted (and rightfully so) as  attacking members of the Trojan Family. I never thought I could take something on a blog so seriously, but I am beyond ashamed at this.

Obviously, my biggest apology goes to CC and members of the Trojan family. I hope my apology is accepted as sincere. It is.

My second apology goes to BN. A statement like this, even though it was not meant the way it was interpreted, is a blemish on the reputation of BN.

The ironic thing about this is that I'm probably one of the least likely to throw insults at Trojans. While I still fully intend on poking fun at Trojans, hopefully this mistake will serve as a reminder for others to think a little bit harder before they write something.

And maybe, just maybe, this can serve as an opportunity to have a few more cordial discussions  with members of CC like we have done in the past.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

I'm going to retire this name since its just an ugly reminder of the situation.

by BruinFan1 on May 23, 2007 3:43 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Please do retire that name.
I never understood your mixed loyalties, but it didn't really bother me.  What bothered me was that a person with mixed loyalties (and there are plenty of them that visit the BN) would call himself "BruinFan1" when in fact he was not the Number One Bruin Fan.  I always thought that appellation should be reserved for someone who was a Bruin through and through which in my opinion you are not.

But that's just my opinion.  You may be the hardest core of all hard core Bruins.  If that's so, you hide it fairly well.

by Fox 71 on May 23, 2007 6:24 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm Keeping It
Because you think I'm so cute and think I might possibly be the best Bruin fan ever.

If it didn't bother you, you wouldn't have mentioned it in the subject line.

by BruinFan1 on May 24, 2007 6:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You misunderstood.
I don't care if you are a justsc rooter or not.  You have to live with your conscience, not me.  If you elect to line up with that band of cheaters and thugs, that's fine.  Have at it.  It does not bother me, as I said.  I can't understand how anyone could voluntarily do so, but that's beside the point.

What sort of grinds on me is your decision to call yourself the number one Bruin fan.  That name doesn't mix with your loyalties and with some of the things you've posted over time.

You can do whatever you like and call yourself whatever you like.  You're only fooling yourself, like cheating at solitaire.  (Hmm - why did cheating come to mind in a post about justsc?  Oh, never mind.)

Geez
Dude, chill out.

No need to make such a big deal about it.

It was a comment.  On a fan blog.

Actually, I'm more embarrassed by you felating CC and the Trojan than anything.

And, as for cordial discussions with those guys, feel free to continue your extensive comments over there.  But, bring it over here?  No thanks.

by EricBruin on May 23, 2007 5:28 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

No kidding
Talk about taking internet drama a little too seriously. Keep the CC garbage over there. I don't spend time on that piece of shit blog over there and I don't want to hear about those losers here.

by bluestreet on May 23, 2007 5:30 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Aw, who the hell cares?
While the trOJans of today may not be pedophiles like the Trojans of legend (legendary stupidity in partying till you're unconscious around a giant wooden horse), they ARE things that are considered equivalent or worse in modern society. We have gone over SUC's extensive rap sheet in the past, and if those assjockeys at CC are in an uproar over being called pedos, then where the hell is the outrage when their "student" athletes commit serious crimes? How is "pedophile" any worse than "rapist", "drug dealer", or "double murderer"?

At least in the past, the Trojans could say that the Greeks were pedophiles, and the "everybody's doing it" defense would at least make sense. Not everyone is a rapist, drug dealer, or double murderer though. Sorry trOJans, SOL on that one.

In short, I don't see your mistake as "terrible" because given all that they already have done, one could easily be convinced that the thugging, raping, cheating, lying lot over there could add one more disgusting label to themselves. No, a terrible mistake would be unconditionally supporting their morally bankrupt football program, which I bet all of those knuckle-draggers over at CC do. Now, that's something to apologize for.

by Tydides on May 23, 2007 9:44 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Chill a bit
There are some on U$C's corrupt football program who are basically criminals, have broken rules, and are getting away with it. The guy in charge is breaking rules to run his depraved program. There are a lot of people supporting them. I have no respect for any of those people.

But you can't go around calling all U$C students and alumni and anyone associated with them "rapists", "drug dealers", "murderers", etc. Don't start name calling like that. Inappropriate.

by tasser10 on May 23, 2007 9:58 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's pretty clear
that I was implicating those who support their football program despite their extensive rap sheet. Given the kind of place CC is, I made the generalization that they are the type of people who enable this behavior by supporting it.

If you were not able to read the context and recognize where I was placing the blame (despite specifically calling out CC twice in three paragraphs), then that's on you. If you DID recognize it and still think it's inappropriate then all I can say is: You Are Wrong. Since when did a fanblog become representative of "SUC students, alumni, and anyone associated with it"?.

If you're looking for a retraction because you are under the misguided notion that those who turn a blind eye to criminal behavior for the sake of winning football games aren't bad people, then you can blow me, because that's never going to happen.

by Tydides on May 23, 2007 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No thanks
I prefer not to blow you, nor am I looking for a retraction. I was respectful in my comments even if I misinterpreted your post. I'm not defending CC or anyone who supports their thugball team and makes excuses for them.

Come on, guys
Neither of you are the enemy.  You're both loyal, true blue Bruins.  The enemy wears ketchup and mustard (even if they sometimes try to disguise themselves as Bruins.)  And try this exercise - think of how many times in the past you have totally agreed on something.

Get past this one.

Well before this becomes a drama thing
I would like to state for the record that I have no problems with tasser or with 99% of the community here. I will admit to being a little irritated at some trOJan apologists, but that's about it.

Peace and love all around BN, except towards trOJans.

by Tydides on May 24, 2007 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No drama here!
I have no problems with Ty either, at all, in fact his passion is quite welcome. We need more students and fans like Ty to fill up our stadiums and avoid getting stuck with the KDs and Lavinomas of the world. Don't much like trOJan apologists either.

I must admit that there are some trOJans I love, because they're my relatives. But they are NEVER apologists and we always tease each other in good fun and in good sport. Then again they are not your typical trOJan either. So, every now and then you will find me defending some trOJans, though never at our detriment.

Wait
I thought HornsFan told us BN has no sense of humor. Am I missing something here?

You guys are all joking around and stuff?

by bluestreet on May 24, 2007 3:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're talking about the guy
who called the Pac 10 weak on the eve of his own team getting destroyed at the hands of a Pac 10 school in the NCAA Tournament. So obviously he is the master of humor (of the unintentional variety).

by Tydides on May 24, 2007 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

not just that ...
getting destroyed by a shitty Pac-10 school no less which is going to be a bottom of the barrel program this coming year.

by bluestreet on May 24, 2007 3:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah...
I have no sense of humor...

Thanks for proving my point. Again.

by HornsFan on May 28, 2007 7:05 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Obsessed with us HF?
Just shows how obsessed you really are ... when you get so wrapped in silly internet drama that you actually takie time out of your vacation to engage in the comment section of a post (in a blog of a team which really doesn't have much to do with your Longhorns) which is much ado about nothing.

Pathetic.

by Nestor on May 28, 2007 9:04 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

If your point
is that you're a tool that got caught talking out of your ass, then yeah, your point was proven. Again.

There's This Comic Book
I think it's called Bizarro World or something like that. Well, what's important is that in this said comic book, the world is a complete mirror opposite of what our reality is.

My conception of Trojans has usually been very negative. I find them to be conceited, hate-filled, and juvenile. My conception of Bruins, which as been proven time and time again, is that we're strong but humble. I think it might be my favorite aspect about being a Bruin. We're great but there's no need to flaunt it.

I jump on this blog and some (definitely not all) seem to fit the Trojan bill. It seems like a little Bizzaro world. These are not the Bruins I know. Bruins don't hate this much. Apparently they can here.

Before being a Bruin, I take a few things more seriously: God, family, friends, and myself. If I didn't work on myself and make sure that I'm not the best person I could be, then that would make me a terrible Bruin. I have very little room for hate in my heart as it seems to be incompatible with the person I want to be. I don't even hate Dorrell. I just pity the poor guy (although I do get real angry at him at times).

So yes, I apologized because the comment, as interpreted, is not something I EVER want to be associated with. The guys at CC deserved at least that, especially since I'll never buy into a "guilt by association" argument for sports. Seems a bit of a stretch to me for an argument of condemnation.

So I guess I really don't mind being seen as a Trojan sympathizer as you do. So many people turned into charactures of themselves that I don't really take too many opinions (outside of sports) that seriously here. In fact, I laughed a lot at reading the responses to this post. So many people sounded like the Trojans I dislike...the ones that are hate-filled, conceited, and juvenile. It sounds slightly like you Fox. And that's why you're claim about not being a Bruin isn't that big of a deal.

Based on behavior Fox, you might be the biggest Trojan on this blog. We can turn in our Bruin Cards together!

by BruinFan1 on May 24, 2007 6:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

If you don't understand
what irritates people like Fox about a place that not only blatantly flouts the rules, but arrogantly claims that they are above them, then perhaps being a trOJan fan and hanging out at Cesspool Central is for you. It doesn't sound like you're a Bruin fan, but rather a Bruin Fan fan. I prefer to focus on the accomplishments of the school rather than the demeanor of those who do.

You are also off the mark with the guilt by association angle. They may not do all the awful things that their football team does, but what does it say about them when these scandals come out and all you hear out of them is excuses? Excuses, lying, spin, and half-truths. In their world, if you can play football, you can do no wrong, and that is truly disgusting. Part of the reason the inmates run the penitentiary over at SUC is because of places like CC that cultivate this kind of behavior by not demanding accountability from those in charge. In case you haven't heard, that's a lot of what BN is about.

But hey, if you want to pander to the site that tried to sweep the "White Power" incident under the rug, then that's on your conscience.

by Tydides on May 24, 2007 7:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks, Ty
Bruinfan1 just doesn't get it.

I don't think I'm going to waste my time any more with this guy.  I thought it would be possible to have a serious discussion with just about anyone, including justsc people, but that doesn't appear to be so.

by Fox 71 on May 24, 2007 9:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cry me a river
Do us all a favor, and burn all your bruin gear before you taint us all with your SUC apologist crap any longer.  You make me sick.  Go back to CC where you belong and hang out with your buddy OJ.  You are  no Bruin.

NY question
Tasser, in New York, where are the best places to bl--, oh forget it.

I'm totally kidding here.

by Barnes2JJ on May 24, 2007 11:00 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ahh, Barnes
Once again the voice of reason.  Getting to the important part right away.

Oh, you were kidding?  Shoot - I was kind of interested in getting the answer.  Ok, forget it.

If you must know
Washington Square Park. I once caught a couple in one of the bathrooms in our business school, which is right in front of the park. Much tighter building security since then.

by tasser10 on May 24, 2007 11:14 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I will keep that in mind
I did enjoy walking around Washington Square Park the last time I was in NY, but that activity was not on the agenda.

Next time, I'll stick to my (NY) food-related questions.  I'm still looking for best deli and best bagels.  I've got Arturo's and John's on my list for pizza.

by Barnes2JJ on May 24, 2007 11:22 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh I didn't know!
OK two of the best and well-known delis are Carnegie Deli, obviously, and Katz's Deli. If you like pastrami, you HAVE to go to Katz's.

As for bagels, in Manhattan you have to go to H&H Bagel. There is another excellent one in Brooklyn but I doubt you'll be venturing there. If you need addresses let me nkow.

by tasser10 on May 24, 2007 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's all good
I thought I would space out my NY requests to you over time.  We're not going until December, but I'm keeping track of your (and others') suggestions.

I have been to Katz's and it was pretty classic.  In fact, we were lucky to get a table.  I will have to try Carnegie next time.

I've heard of H&H, but I have no idea how.  I think we bought a bagel off the street last time, just to try one, but it was about as big as a hubcap and tasted about the same as one.  Not a good choice on our part.

But I did pick up a really inexpensive new Rolex watch down in Battery Park!

by Barnes2JJ on May 24, 2007 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is this the H&H Bagel of Seinfeld fame?
Where Kramer goes on strike because the boss won't let him celebrate Festivus?

Yes, my only knowledge of NYC comes from Seinfeld.

by Tydides on May 24, 2007 11:51 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Seinfeld=knowledge
Unfortunately, I've "learned" a lot about NYC from Seinfeld, too.

I will have to rely on T. to answer the H&H question.

Sure is!
That is the one. Great bagels!

There was increased security
in some of the buildings on campus about a year ago because of the exact same thing. I only found out about it because the DB currently has some smut writer as a regular columnist who just likes to write about sex to stir the pot.

by Tydides on May 24, 2007 11:23 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

For what it's worth...
I found your joke to be clearly directed at the Trojans of old and not USC students, alumni, etc.  If someone was going to pick a fight online about that, then they were looking for a fight to begin with.
