Malcom Lee Promoted To 5 Star By Scout.com

I was reading on scout.com that Malcom Lee has really come into his own. I'm not sure how to take these comments(see below) but it looks good in print:(free story)

Malcolm Lee, the 6-4 junior point guard from Riverside (Calif.) North, gets a slight edge as the top West Coast player in attendance. His length, quickness and deep range make him a very exciting prospect at the next level. Lee has the ball-handling ability to play the one, but his shot is getting good enough that he may play significant minutes at the two. As an illustration of just how much we think of Lee as a prospect, we think he's a better prospect at the same age than Arron Afflalo.

And Afflalo just took UCLA to back-to-back Final Fours, was the Pac-10 POY and a consensus First Team All-American. Of course, Lee has a long way to go before he's the player that Afflalo is today. But, as a prospect, Lee has better physical traits and skills than Afflalo did as a high school junior.

I'm starting to worry about AA's draft status. It's become fashionable just to say 'He's a possible 2nd round pick' and we all know that is bullshit. AA is a top collegiate defender and has a very competitive mindset. I suspect Utah at #25 may be his destination.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Is going to be a REALLY good recruiting class.  Scout.com has nothing but good things to say about Malcolm Lee and Jerime and Anderson, Jrue Holliday will be amazing if we land him (which it seems like we will), and Drew Gordon/whatever PF Howland lands will be a nice addition at post.
By the way, any ideas on why we started recruting Trey Thompkins so late in the game?  It seems like we're just talking with him to push Drew Gordon into accepting our offer to him.. buut, he must be pretty interested in UCLA to immediately add us to his list after first contact.  I don't have a subscription so I can't follow the whole story... anyone else know what the real deal is there?  They'd both definitely be welcome as far as I'm concerned.
Possibly three 5-stars and a 4-star?  I'm almost forgetting about Kevin Love!  ahhh hurry up winter '07!

Hold Your Horses
Though Mal Lee was upgraded to a 5-star guy about a month ago, the wrod is that Drew Gordon is NOT leaning toward UCLA at this point, and we all know that Jrue is still on the fence.  The Trey thompkins info is encouraging though, and I believe he's another Oak Hill guy . . . it would be quite a coup to start getting Oak Hill grads, and it goes to show everyone that Duke is on the decline (and will sadly drag Kyle Singler down with it).

No subscription either
But I think it's customary for recruitment to continue, even if no scholarship has been offered.  Even if we haven't been recruiting Thompkins seriously, he has probably still been receiving mail from UCLA.

UCLA is going after some national bigs
because we need a real post player badly in the 08 season.  Gordon is not a lean at all, so we are doing all we can to find one.

Apparently we have contacted Trey Thompkins, J'mison Morgan, Tyler Zeller, and Al-Farouq Aminu.

I am guessing Aminu is a long shot, but this guy is easily the best player we could get of the posts we are after.  If we got him to go with Jrue, we would have the number 1 class in the country.

Are we going to have a problem
with too many great players and not enough minutes?  I have complete faith in Coach Howland to take care of egos in addition to the x's and o's, but all the talent makes me wonder a bit.

And I'm sure there are lots of schools who would be glad to have that problem.

Even if they're 5 stars...
they may not be the type of player who would be one and done.  Gordon is the type of player where it probably wouldn't be a huge issue if he didn't play a lot right away, though he may be good enough to get some PT.

It seems to me that Howland has the program in the perfect place, where freshmen play a bit and get used to the college game, sophomores can show truly how good they are, juniors can continue to improve or cement their draft position, and seniors are the two or three people on the team who can be really good and lead the team.  I would also say that it is important that most of these players stay three years.  With the kind of talent we'll have, four years won't be essential, but when players leave after two the amount of turnover starts to be a bit disruptive.  And I wouldn't mind the occasional one year player (like Renardo Sidney- you may notice that he has a new list of interested schools)

Fox, thats a pleasant dilemma . . .
that BH can deal with should we have the good fortune.  In the short run, Wright's departure really is a blessing because it gives BH more flexibility with the extra scholie.  That being said, Id like to see so bigs locked up asap as it appears we're in good shape with our smalls for at least the next few years . . . Mal Lee is the #3 rated point in the country and Jerime is two spots back behind that twerp, Larry Drew, Jr.  If we can land Jrue, we're all set at the 2.  We really need some 4s, and BH has already offered the Wear twins from Mater Dei in '09 that are very Lopez-like.  Renardo Sidney is another possibility . . . a guy thats barely 16 years old and is already close to 6'10 and 275#!

Howland tells recruits exactly where they stand
so if they come here they probably will not be worried about not getting a lot of playing time early on.  Our incredible depth helps us get to back-to-back Final 4s.

If they end up wanting to leave like Wright, then let them transfer.

Once again
Howland sniffs out an underrated prospect. Not that Lee wasn't highly regarded when we got him, because he was. But he wasn't rated as highly as he is now, and the reports coming out now indicate he is a better prospect than the more hyped Larry Drew Jr., who had (and still has) interest in UCLA, but didn't want to commit. It's cruel to say "you snooze, you lose" but that's life. Anderson and Lee WANTED to be Bruins enough to commit when the offer was available, and those are the kinds of guys we want.

The picture on '09 is still wide open with the Wear twins, Sidney, and Reeves Nelson, among others. My advice to them is that once they figure out that UCLA is where they really WANT to be, better jump on an offer quick. Don't miss out like Larry Drew.

From what I read
we offered Drew before Anderson, but when Drew said he wanted to open up his recruitment, we offered Anderson, who committed on the spot, effectively taking the opportunity away from Drew. With both Lee and Anderson committed, and Holiday as a possibility, I see no way that Drew will be offered.

Drew Gordon
Drew Gordon's making his decision on Monday.

And, I think we just offered Shawn Williams for class of '09.

He's supposed to announce at 3:30 today
My wife is a Mitty grad and we "hob-nobbed" at a wine party this weekend wherein the rumor was that Drew saw the Kansas game at the tank and was really hyped on UCLA but that he was worried that he'd be lost in K-Love's shadow.  Its 50-50.
