In Response to that Guy: BYOB (Build Your Own Blog)

Bruin-whatshisname made yet another diary that was attacking Nestor and Bruins Nation.  I wanted to respond to it.  In bold is a list of 5 "rules" he wrote as a conclusion to a long whining post.

1. Do not disagree with Nestor or his cronies.

Anyone can disagree as long as the disagreement is based on facts.  Facts that you can defend, or even better, that need no defending.

2. Do not try to share your opinion unless you can back it up with evidence that it is the same as Nestor and his cronies.

Back it up with evidence.  Period.

3. Do not defend or make non-negative comments in response to anyone who disagrees with Nestor and/or his cronies.

I make non-negative comments in response to people who disagree with Nestor relatively frequently, but I also contribute to the site and never make a diary whose sole purpose is to complain about how one man decides to run his site.

4. Do not defend yourself if Nestor or any of his cronies respond to any of your posts to point out how wrong you unquestionably are.

Again, just defend yourself with an argument that can stand on its own.  Hell, I comment on Conquest Chronicles now and then with little jabs at sc, but whatever I say is well reasoned and difficult to argue against.

5. Do not in any way suggest that Nestor or his cronies are not completely fair and just and represent the majority opinion of the total combined visitors to Bruins Nation (whether outspoken or silent).

First of all, the majority opinion on this site IS that KD needs to go; it's been well established.  Second, even if the opposite were true, it doesn't matter.  This is Nestor's blog.  A couple of years ago he decided to write his opinions on the internet.  People began to read his opinions and started to check the blog every day.  It's become a rather big site now, but that doesn't mean that this isn't his blog anymore.  He's still a guy who spends his spare time writing about sports at his alma mater.  Maybe if you were paying him money to read his blog you'd have some input as to what gets published, but you don't, and so you are correct in your assertion that you have no rights.  If you think that this site is backwards and that the other side needs to be heard, make your own blog.  That's what Nestor did in response to everyone defending Lavin.  He thought that there were too many people who had it all wrong, so instead of bitching over and over on other sites, he decided to make his own.  DefendDorrell.com, buy the name, start the blog, recruit readers with great writing based on hard facts.  Hell, make some shirts and see how well they sell.  That's the best way to get your opinion heard, rather than whining here.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

DefendDorrell.com already exists
It is called BRO. Say anything bad about KD there and you get called a traitor, a trojan, a troll, etc.  Plus, you have to pay to get such insults.  If not for insider info on the basketball program I would be out of there.

PS:  On being called a trojan if you criticize KD.  Why would a trojan ever speak ill of KD?  KD and his stumbling football program is the best friend SC could have.  KD poses absolutely no threat to them.  A trojan would want KD to remain at UCLA forever.  Just like we wished Tollner could have remained at SC forever.  I am constantly baffled by this logic:  Anti KD = trojan.  This logic only makes sense if one believes KD is god and is infallible.  This is getting depressing the more I delve into the pro-KD mindset.  I'm stopping.

DefendDorrell.com
Pretty much all other subscription based sites that are dependent on access to Morgan Center for their info. are de facto DefendDorrell.com sites.

And their efforts became very transparent to me at least in my eyes when those guys went the extra mile to spin a loss to Trojans two years ago as a sign of progress.

I am with your bg. If not for insider info. from Greg Hicks (who himself thinks KD is over his head) I wouldn't be paying for BRO. I don't bother wasting time in the Funzone and in the Romper Room (aka Bruin Gold).

Inside Info from Morgan?
If they have the "inside info" and access to Morgan, I think we should follow up on a couple of suggestions that were posted here a while ago -- to do the following:

Let's create a "safe zone" -- so that they do not fear our "savage responses" (aka fact based responses)  -- in which they use their insider information to get the best "empirical" responses to the 20 or so points made here and on DD.

Let's give them a chance to prove that he does not have the worst record since WWII, that his record against winning teams is better than we say, etc.

Let's agree that a moderator will take out all "flames" and only leave "fact based" responses. Although I am against censorship of any kind, I will agree to this limitation just to take away one of their justifications that they can't  post here because we are mean.

Finally, if there is a way -- let's either cross post the discussion or find a neutral blog in which to post it.

If their claim to fame is 'Inside information" -- let's challenge them to use the best minds in Morgan to refute the basic posts we have made about KD's record.

I don't think they will accept the challenge because they know, deep down, that the posts here are substantive/empirical and not unrealistic rants.

Nestor, is there a way we can do this?

sjh

PS. The format I propose would be to put DD, McCloskey (sp?) and some of our stronger empiricists against anyone and everyone they choose -- including their Morgan insiders. We can throw in you and '71 if the debate will include interpretation and editorial comment.

Honored to be in the group, but
I fear I would emulate Mr. Dorrell.  (Deer in the headlights look, three or four cliches, then turn and run.)  He is in over his head in his current position, and I fear I would be as well.  I think the group should substitute you for me.

Show No Fear Opera Man
Any guy who can go on stage in tights and sing in a foreign language has nothing to fear from the Dorrellistas.

You have a unique voice here -- and I think you would be the logical choice.

But, it doesn't seem like anyone wants a showdown at the It's Not Ok Corral.

So, once more, I quote Emily -- "Nevermind".

Fox in tights???
That scares me and I'm practically fearless!!

All right, enough "tights" comments.
You bunch of Philistines.

I've only worn tights in a few shows.  (That doesn't count wearing the tights to the local cowboy bars -- JUST KIDDING.)

But if you really want fearless - try coming out in a nightshirt.  In the second act of Pirates of Penzance, Major General Stanley thinks he hears a noise.  (It's the entire band of pirates and the entire squad of police singing at the tops of their collective lungs.  The Major General isn't all that swift.)  So he comes outside in his nightshirt to investigate.  I found the last pair of men's sock garters in Pasadena and wore them for that big entrance.  When I looked at the conductor for my cue, she was giggling.  I knew I had arrived at that point.

There's nothing like skinny white legs and a red nightshirt (complete with the Major General's medals, of course) to make a person feel comfortable on stage.

Great post
It's like someone complaining about free ice cream.

Hey, if you don't like it, don't take any more of it and stop eating it!

Nestor puts all of this in motion at the start of each day and it's free news and entertainment, etc. if you want it.

Questions?  I hope not.

Just one suggestion
This blog would be a lot better if everyone agreed with me and only thought happy thoughts.

Oh, wait.  This is BN.  Sorry.  I thought it was BRO.  Never mind.

(Although there is much to be said for everyone agreeing with me all the time.  We would be so much more focused.)

Haha!
Sorry Folks, I did write a long whiny post, but decided to delete it myself because I did not want to fuel anymore negative discussions.

There are some very good, healthy discussions going on in some of the diaries lately, and it seemed unnecessary to focus on the negative attitude taken by some towards first-time posters and those who might disagree with the establishment.  So I deleted it.

I'm sorry for those who actually caught the post in the short period that it was up, but it would help if we could just drop it and return focus back to the constructive contributions to the site.

I'll keep quiet for a while so at least there will be no further distractions coming from me.  Carry on, and keep up the good work. =)

(Btw, I did have fun writing it, and the 5 Laws of Nestor included above do not quite summarize the content of the post.)

Seriously
I wouldn't apologize and I wouldn't be quiet.  Just continue to read and contribute and, back up your opinions (whether they are similar to the masses here or not) with facts.  In other words, let's all focus on UCLA sports and not on the (alleged) overall tone of the site.

You'll be just fine.
