Viney Wants the Money

Bumped from the diaries. GO BRUINS. -N

I don't think I'm alone when I say I've been dying for more positive stories about UCLA football in general, particularly about this upcoming season's staff and players, so I was very happy to come across Andrew Friedman's article about freshmen defensive back Courtney Viney.

Viney is taking care of business:

He arrived in Westwood on June 24th with the rest of his classmates and has had a pretty hectic schedule ever since. "We workout four days a week," Viney explains. "My days starts at five o'clock and I am in the weight room by six. Then at seven I am up on the field running. I do all that and then go to summer school. It has been a lot but I am enjoying it." Not only a hard worker, Viney is also intelligent and comes from an ambitious family: Viney does not take easy courses as he is majoring in Architectural Engineering. His sister is in UCLA's Law school. So, I guess there will be no Ballroom Dancing or cake-walk Spanish classes for him.

Viney says he's impressed with his fellow DBs, as well as fellow freshmen RB Raymond Carter.  The mention of Carter was particularly uplifting, as our offense underachieved last season and was ineffective in the spring game.

And here's money (emphasis mine):

As for his goals this year, Viney does not shy away from what he wants. "I would like to be able to step on the field and contribute. The coaches already told me that I will be a special teams guy and in the fall I am going to compete as a punt and kick returner. I just want to help this team beat 'SC and win a national championship." Good work ethic, intelligence, ambition and attitude; I love this kid already.

Go Bruins!

I like this guy.
I have no idea about his skills, but I like his heart and his head.  He thinks we can win every game.  To quote one of the great football thinkers of our time, "Why Not Us?  Why Not Now?"

We need more like Viney.

architectural engineering?
hopefully he takes school more seriously than he says...considering there's no "architectural engineering" major at ucla.  or maybe the reporter just got it wrong.

Options are..
Structural Engineering (specialty of Civil Engineering) or Architecture. In either case, you don't get to go into either until your third year, finish prerequisite classes and other hurdles.

I remember the structural specialty was notorious for kicking your ass.  Most people I remember that wanted to do it, found out it was actually hard work and ended up switching to sociology.

So good luck to him.

Opinions
I never did too well when the answer had to be calculated using some of those number thingies that were real small and printed above the other number.  And I never really cared what time the train left Chicago, so I lost interest in those problems.

My outlook on life improved greatly when I left the math department and found classes where the answers were sort of a matter of opinion.

And no, I did not take structural engineering.  I'm glad someone is taking it, but the world is better for the fact that I didn't take it.

speaking of Leinart
not to change the subject, but, has anyone seen this?

What a douche. I doubt Vince Young would do that if they lost.

Anyway, Viney may be small but he has heart and it looks like he has a hunger for winning.

Sounds Like A Real Good Kid...
...but 5-8, 160?  How is he going to match up agaist big wide-outs?  God, I miss the days of guys like Easley and Rodgers.

What more could you ask?
What an attitude.  Beat SuC and win a NC.

I'm a big fan.

Not to bring any negative energy here, but...
It's sad how excited we get when a player's goals are to beat SC and win a NC.  That should be every Bruin's goals, everyday, every year.
Go Bruins!!!
