Barnes2JJ

It's a YouTube kind of night and I can't watch this enough times:

Again. I was in the student section in the middle of mosh pit in ABSOLUTE DELIRIUM.

Where the heck were you?

Thank you, Nestor
That was a very kind thing to show us.  I've probably watched it a gazillion times, but I've never seen it enough.

I heard somewhere that Barnes called an audible on that play, and that Donahue was really p.o.-ed (until after the play went for a TD.)  Are those legends true?

It has to be true
Where were those plays all year? JJ was playing all year, wasn't he? He could have done that all day. But noooooo. We must run on 1st and 2nd down! I am Donahue! Hear me whimper! I would have loved to see his mug on the sideline as the play was being called...

Barnes had nothing, NOTHING to lose! And that is what happens when you are not afraid to lose. If I ever meet him, I may drop to my knees and tell him that "I am no worthy!".

Excerpt from Bill Plaschke article...
He threw one touchdown pass against USC on an audible while his coach, Terry Donahue, was shouting, "No! No! No!" He threw another touchdown pass on an audible that had receiver coach Rick Neuheisel shouting, "Oh my God! What is he doing?" He threw for 384 yards that afternoon, 204 yards during a fourth-quarter comeback, and 90 yards on a game-winning touchdown pass.
By the way, if you're in the LA area, Fox PrimeTicket is scheduled to replay the 1992 game again this Saturday at 1:00 AM (PrimeTicket replays a lot of the past UCLA/USC games in the early morning). That's how I was able to capture & post the clip of this play on YouTube. Unfortunately, PrimeTicket sometimes isn't that reliable as far as presenting what the TV Guide says. A few months ago, TV Guide listed this game on PrimeTicket and I got a replay of a high school volleyball game instead. Grrrr...

I heard...
that Barnes is trying to shop his story around for a movie deal.

Lol!
I know.  I've been traveling for work way too much lately.

I won't let it happen again!

Yeah!
I thought you'd be all over this! :)

I saw JJ later that year after the game...chillin' at Sunset Rec with a blonde honey. Daaamn right. Well earned.

I was a high school freshman
I saw this and he instantly became one of my heros.  As I've mentioned a few times, my aunt's best friend is friends with his parents and he wrote me a congratulatory letter when I graduated.

well since you asked . . .
I was in the car, driving home from the Rose Bowl when this happened.  IT was my 10 year "reunion" being staged at the game that year.  Mrs. LOST and the youngest member of the tribe was along (he was only 1 1/2 at the time)  Long about the midpoint of the third quarter, I started getting the stink eye from Mrs. (also a Bruin - B.F.A. '84 - but not a rabid Football fan) about how cold it was. That, and the kid was shivering on the cold metal bench in the corner over the tunnel. Yep, it was time, and up to that point I was fully in moral victory land (hmmm, didn't think we'd get 17 points on these guys THIS year, third string QB and all).  The week before was the Field Goal fiesta against Oregon (a 9-6 win - did Trevor Hoffman get the save?), and a win against $C would salvage a 6-5 record after one of the worst stretches of the Donahue era (5 game slump). Yeah, $C looked beatable earlier in the year (ask Andy Trakas(sp?) the Aztec PK about that one), but it sure didn't seem in the cards.

On the walk to the car in the south end of the park, I heard the roaring for the score that made it 31-24.    Nearly lost control on the 605 south, desperately trying to get to my folks' house in the SG valley to catch the last couple of minutes on TV. Ranks right up there with the '75, '80, '86, '95 and '07 versions of the game.
