Zen Master Petey Knows All

Last week, I took a good natured jab at the ridiculous hype surrounding the team from South Central.  Of course, some argue that the hype is justified, in so far as Southern Cal has a very talented team.

But, that -- I'm told -- isn't the reason Southern Cal heads up the BlogPoll.  Players, shmayers.  Apparently, I was so blinded by all the hype about USC's team, that I hardly noticed the gratuitous slobbering over Pete Carroll.

You see, according to the LAT (huge surprise), Carroll isn't just a successful college football coach, he's a freak'n philosopher.  Maybe you caught this unabashed stroke job of the head man at Southern Cal.

Was this football practice? Or Zen?...

He and the receivers worked on technique, certainly. But all the while, [Carroll] was infusing them with ideas he had formed thanks in no small part to a paperback book he had picked up 33 years ago....  Part of his approach comes from a Zen-laced primer on a sport far removed from the violent chaos of a Trojans football game.

Tennis...   The book is "The Inner Game of Tennis." It is full of teaching, Carroll told me, that inspires his life. It is full of teaching that he uses to help his players perform -- even if they don't know it....

So explain the philosophy.

"It's all about clearing the clutter in the interactions between your conscious and subconscious mind."...

Uh, how do you do that?

"Through superior practice and a clear approach. Focus, clarity and belief in yourself are what allows you to express your ability without discursive thoughts and concerns."

Oh, yeah, right, Pete's an intellectual.  A philosopher.  Not just a physical genius.  He's one of the great minds of our time.  And I just thought he was a solid combination of defensive coach and used car salesman.

My bad, I guess I wasn't paying attention.  I was probably too busy to notice when we learned the Petey knew the Secret.  As reported by our very own UCngLA, and posted on EDSBS and half a dozen or more other places:

According to Bruins Nation, noted humanitarian and USC football coach Pete Carroll attended a service at the Agape Spiritual Center, one of these Oprah-friendly nouveau religious centers for those who like their religion without crushing guilt, obligation, or judgement. You call them New Age, we call them total pussies. (Lapsed Catholics say what!)

Pete then, according to witness UCngLA from the openly biased folks at Bruins Nation, addressed the crowd with the following opening line, excerpted from the post at BN:

"It's great to be in this place, to be among all these angels." And by angels he was referring to the audience.

And, yes, it's not just Petey's deep rooted commitment to philosophy, the man is also a freak'n Humanitarian.

He, is.  Really.  Just ask the guy who runs Pete's website.

"I have no problem with spiritual enlightenment but Pom Pom sure as hell is not the Dalai Lama of South Central."  UCngLA

And if that wasn't enough, last week Heritage Hall trotted out their resident lap dog, Ben Malcolmson (read: paid blogger) to shower us with more spittle about Pete's Carrollosophy.

I challenge you to read even a small portion of this without becoming at least slightly physically ill.  It's that ridiculous.  Honestly, Ben, wipe your chin.  But, being the faithful reporter that I am, I read a bit of it.  Here's some passages for the history books.

It all began in the year 2000.

Out of coaching, for the first time in 26 years....  No more reading offenses. Now it was reading books.
...
One of those books was by legendary basketball coach John Wooden. Carroll soon became enamored by the thoughts written on those pages. He sat there soaking in the values and beliefs of one of sports' most admired figures....

"It was a pretty profound moment -- one thing in that book just hit me," said Carroll, now entering his seventh season with the Trojans. "Coach Wooden talked about how it took him 17 years to win his first national championship, but when he figured it out he won 10 national championships in the next 11 years.

"It hit me because once he `got it,' he had it down. That's what I set out to accomplish." ... "It was the spark I needed to begin formulating my ideas into a philosophy that would be the basis for what we have here," Carroll said.

Yeap, you read that right, Pete Carroll attributes his success to lessons learned from John Wooden.  Funny me, I didn't notice "foster a culture of permissiveness" anywhere on the Pyramid of Success.  Maybe I need to re-read that.

And I thought Petey formulated his philosophy based upon some book about tennis.  Maybe the boys at the LAT and Heritage Hall need to get their stories straight.

Anyway, I get it, dude can coach very well.  But, I love the hype machine.  Just look at Southern Cal pimping this guy.  Just look at Petey pimping himself.  And look at the media eating it up.  Next thing you know Carroll is going to be multipling fish and cleansing lepers.

Too funny.

GO BRUINS.

Lapdogs
That would be the entire "Toejam blogosphere" that is incapable of independent and intellectually honest thoughts.

Cheetie Peetie is all about Cheetie Peetie and it is  funny to see the Trojan Times and all the other lapdogs just eat it all up.

Are you f*ing kidding me?
I just wasted 5 minutes of my life looking at Carroll's website.

Here's my question--this is the "official" PC website.  As such, I am assuming that he has sanctioned this site and perhaps owns it and profits off it (he sells t-shirts and other crap).  Is this correct?

And, as the triumphant music over the opening credits roll, it says, "THE HUMANITARIAN"???? He sanctioned that graphic??

Well!  Mr. Humility he is certainly not.  Impressive record?  Ok, I will reluctantly give him that.  But how about a little humility?  Is that too much to ask for?  Holy cow.

I literally feel ill.

Carroll. USC's answer to St. Augustine.
What a man! What a humanitarian! What a joke!
It seems like the trOJans have taken the primer from Goebbels the Nazi high chief of propaganda.
On nother note. A few of the highly selected recruits of Carroll's, complained about the dorms they were assigned on campus. No A/C, small, etc. so they have been accomodated. Most were moved off campus to that frat house that houses the football team.
Did you read TJ Simers today in the LA Times. Funny article on KD & SPJ.

Unfortunately PC has two things going
for him, as opposed to his counterpart in Westwood:
  1.  A nationally respected FB program.
  2.  The ability to string at least 2 English sentences together that make sense.

by bluegold on Aug 28, 2007 9:56 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

That is fine
But there has to be some kind of limit to asski$$ing in the media.

I think back to Lavin days. Viagra Lute's Cats ruled Pac-10 and we had a joke head coach like Dorrell. Even then we didn't see this kind of nonsense about Lute (but then again Lavo was known to string few sentences together).

by bluestreet on Aug 28, 2007 10:27 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know which is worse
  1.  KD's lack of command of the English language
  2.  Lavin's pile of crap streaming from his mouth, but done ever so smoothly.
More the reason I appreciate the straight-talking Howland.

Pete Carroll is great!
Pete Carroll will give you life lessons!  Pete Carroll will wash your dog!

Pete Carroll will refinance your adjustable rate mortgage!

Make.  It.  Stop.

How awesome is Cheetie Peetie
So awesome that:
Pete Carroll does not own a house. He walks into random houses and people move.
and
Pete Carroll CAN divide by 0.
and
Out of high school, Chuck Norris originally committed to USC but USC pulled the offer.
and
Pete Carroll knows what Willis is talkin' about.
and
Everybody says Al Gore invented the internet? Nope. Pete Carroll.
More over here.

I've seen stuff like this...
... used for everyone from Chuck Norris to Kobe.

Stuff like:  "He ran with the Bulls in Spain last year, and caught 5."

OR

"He went to MacDonald's and ordered a Whopper -- and they made him one."

The sad thing is, U$C honks probably believe it.

You're just jealous
That our coach doesn't have convicts on his staff.

Bitch as much as you want, when you look at it objectively, he is a good person, and a good coach.

Good luck BN.  You'll need it.

Fight on!!! Beat the Wolverines!!!

by USCLink on Aug 28, 2007 12:54 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

And he's humble, too, right?
No one here defends Dorrell.  You are preaching to the choir with that little dig.

Yes, we are very jealous of all things SC.  That's why Bruin students spend so much time in South Central on Friday and Saturday nights.

by Barnes2JJ on Aug 28, 2007 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Its just like real life
Just like in real life we couldn't keep these losers out of Westwood, these tools cannot stay off BN.

by bluestreet on Aug 28, 2007 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Soooo predictable
Your coach may not have convicts on your staff but he sure has flooded his rosters with all kinds of thugs. And yet all of you keep sucking his popsickle without raising one question about it.

If you losers had a shred of intellectual honesty in your corrupt minds, you'd raise at least 10 percent of the concern we raised re. Scott on BN.

Whatever Trojie. Now go over to Criminal Chronicles and whine on about BN.

by bluestreet on Aug 28, 2007 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I almost forgot
None of the Trojie trolls who visit BN ever answer this question:

How can I join White Nation, that happy-go-lucky club of football player jokesters, over at SC?  I also would like to know where they got those cool pictures of black babies in handcuffs and other hilarious cartoons like that.

Carroll said it was all a big joke.  He's God, of course, and "objectively...a good person" so he must be right.

by Barnes2JJ on Aug 28, 2007 1:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am sure
Linky was up in arms over black babies in handcuffs and swastika graphics. I am sure he wrote up posts asking Pom Pom to suspend those players over these hateful, disgusting, despicable graphics somewhere in the internets.

Right Linky?

by bluestreet on Aug 28, 2007 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hypocrisy
they name is SUCLink.

I suppose we can add cowardice to the list, since he doesn't seem to want to answer for the White Nation scandal.

So which is it? Is Pom Pom, who endorsed White Nation, "God", thereby implicating you as a racist via your unconditional support of him? Or is he not "objectively, a good person" and you were just blowing smoke out of your ass like a typical trOJan retard?

Pick one.

All I know is this
When Texas scored the winning TD against SC a couple of years ago, the blond SC cheerleading was shown jumping up and down celebrating.

That is all you need to know about the collective IQ of Fig High.

Yeap
And those dingbats did the same thing during 13-9.

It was just a matter of time
Your jab re ES is ridiculous, as others have noted.

But, leaving that aside, can you honestly tell me that you don't think the hype surrounding Mr. Humble is a bit much?  Seriously, be honest.

As I said, PC's a good coach.  And I don't know him well enough to say whether or not he is a good person, beyond of course believing that he runs a lax program seriously lacking in oversight and discipline.

And it's not bitching, it's ribbing.  And Mr. Humanitarian deserves every bit of it.

by Menelaus on Aug 28, 2007 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The ES Jab
was just as original as the Trojie fight song (a pathetic, joke of a one tune band I think Link is part of).

Hmmm, but I think I just found...
...that U$C RB coach Todd McNair was arrested for dogfighting in 1996:  http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C0DE0DE1339F937A35757C0A960958260

According to the April 4, 1996 online edition of the New York Times:

Todd McNair, a Houston Oilers running back, was arrested Tuesday and charged with 81 offenses involving the mistreatment of 22 pit bulls being trained on his property for dogfights, the police said yesterday. Seventeen dogs were found tied to trees with chains, all had scars and many appeared malnourished, Lieut. Scott Goess of the East Greenwich police said. He described the condition of the dogs as "appalling."

According to McNair's official bio at U$C:

http://usctrojans.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/mcnair_todd00.html

He was a running back and special teams standout for 8 seasons in the NFL, first with the Kansas City Chiefs for 5 years (1989-93), followed by 2 seasons (1994-95) with the Houston Oilers and then back with the Chiefs in 1996. In his career, he ran for 803 yards with 3 touchdowns, caught 252 passes with 7 scores and averaged 18.6 yards on kickoff returns. He retired as the Chiefs' No. 10 all-time receiver.

Hmmm... assuming that $C's Todd McNair wasn't signed by the Chiefs until after April 4, 1996, meaning that he was still considered an Oilers player, then it sounds like the same guy.

Who wants to forward this onto the Trojan Times, huh?

No conviction?
a preliminary westlaw search does not find a record of a case involving McNair and a dogfighting ring/animal cruelty in the New Jersey court system.

Pete's not a bad guy
It's nice to see a slight break from the pounding we give our coach, myself included.  Buuuuut, on the other hand, I care about Pete's shortcomings about as much as I care about Karl's handicap.

    (Hear Me Out)

He's brought National
respectability, National Championships, Heismans, #1 recruiting classes, players splattered all over the first round of the NFL draft for what use to be team dominated by UCLA before he got their.

This is exactly what everyone wants Dorrell to be.

    (OK, Go Ahead)

by bcrack on Aug 28, 2007 6:18 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

bcrack - this will be simple
No one -- NO ONE -- (I don't know how to write it larger) wants to be like Cheatie Petie.  He cheats.  He has a moral compass without a pointer.  You really and truly must be a typical trOJan to believe that anyone other than a typical trOJan has any desire to be anything at all like that guy.

Do yourself (and us) a favor.  Quit trying to match wits with the grown-ups.  Just bo back and re-take your classes from Senora Ross, spend a little more time in the White Nation, and help OJ catch the real killers.  You clearly have all the flavors of all the Kool Aid in every molecule of your being.

Sorry, not all of the words are one syllable, so you may have to get a Bruin to translate.

bcrack; re; PC v. KD
Yeah & Mussolini made the trains run on time; Hitler built the auto-bahns, designed the volkswagen, Mao, fed 100 million Chinese, 100mm million died of starvation, Uncle Joe Stalin brought agriculture reform to the USSR, Not, on the backs of 80 million dead.
I'd rather be a pedestrian 7-5 or  8-4 than have the rep that Carroll has built at south central. Carroll isn't that a girl's name?

by jim masterson on Aug 28, 2007 7:09 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

not definitive
Was just a quick search, and as pointed out in the other thread, a plea agreement or a low-level conviction might not come up in the system.
