Vote for Joe Bruin in the Capital One Bowl Mascot Challenge

Bumped again. Keep it going people. GO BRUINS. -N

Bumped. Every man, woman, and child who considers himself or herself a member of BN needs to do this. Email, digg, and delicio tags added below so you can share it with every UCLA related family, friends you know. GO BRUINS. -N

Hello fellow Bruins, I'm not sure if this has been discussed here on BN, but everyone's favorite mascot, our good old Joe Bruin, is in a yearly competition pitting mascot against mascot for the Capital One Bowl Mascot Challenge.

Just for being on their "All-American Mascot Team", our mascot program gets $5,000 dollars, and for winning the competition, Joe and Josie get an additional $5,000. The site says you can vote everyday, but I have only been able to vote once as of yet. They have weekly match ups throughout the college football season, so if Joe wins this match up (He's currently losing to Big Red of Western Kentucky, come on people!), he moves on to a new opponent, and so on. His video is pretty awesome, he does a very spirited 8-clap. Lets support Joe!

VOTE FOR JOE BRUIN!

I heard yesterday
that the voting thingy did not let you vote.  I think I voted about 5 or 6 times in the space of about 10 seconds.  It just kept giving me new words to type in the block.  Or I kept screwing it up and voted no times.  What do I know.

by Fox 71 on Sep 12, 2007 12:12 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Someone's voting for UCLA
Last I checked, we were almost 100 up.

Joe Bruin does a pretty darn good 8-clap.

by Barnes2JJ on Sep 12, 2007 12:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Voting thingy
I did the same thing yesterday.  I keep typing in the word in the block, and it kept giving me new ones.  What I didn't see was the "Click here" link just to the there where it let's you get a "nickname."  Once you do that, your vote counts.

by Menelaus on Sep 12, 2007 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You have to vote for EVERY group, not just Joe's
That may have been your problem.

That is also the only reason that makes sense to me as to why there are so many votes for the Red Thing. If I had to vote for two schools that I didn't care about, I would probably vote for a strange looking red thing over a bear. My point is, it's not just us against W Kentucky but us against every person who is forces to vote for some mascot in the five other groups.

by UCngLA on Sep 12, 2007 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good point
I've probably voted 10 times today, if the thing is counting all of my ballot-box stuffing.

Last I checked, we were up by 130.

I have no idea why I find this so fascinating.  I guess it's my competitive spirit.

by Barnes2JJ on Sep 12, 2007 12:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gotta love the "interview":
INT: You're obviously a carnivore. So, what's your favorite food?

JOE BRUIN: Trojans... helmets and all.

also
since you have to vote for every head-to-head matchup, vote for cavman while you're voting for Joe Bruin (shoutout for my law/grad school's entry).

by bruinhoo on Sep 12, 2007 12:52 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Another reason to vote
Joe Bruin seems to be pretty popular with the ladies based on the photo.

I had no idea bears could attract such fine women.

by Barnes2JJ on Sep 12, 2007 12:56 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Reminds me of an old "Letterman" sketch.
About 10-15 years ago (yikes!), Dave had a remote camera set up in Times Square tracking a guy in a bear suit trying to hail a cab.

The bit was called, stranegly enough, "CAN A GUY IN A BEAR SUIT GET A CAB IN NEW YORK CITY?"

I think the 4th or 5th time was the charm.

Here's to another day of voting for Joe and blowing off budget work.

DOWN by 26!!!!
They got the EST jump on voting.

by UCngLA on Sep 13, 2007 7:59 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Ridiculous!
There is NO WAY we should be losing to The Thing.

UCLA is only about 15 times bigger than Western Kentucky.

If we lose this one, we only have ourselves to blame.  I have already voted about 50 times and may now have carpal tunnel.

We're getting toasted by big red!!!

Lol!
I'm laughing at your last comment, not at the fact that Western Fricking Kentucky is whipping our butt.

Well, so what.  They might beat us in mascot voting, but we could beat them in football.

Probably.

They just moved up from IAA
Which means that KD would have to do some growing and learning before figuring out how to play against them.

When do the voting booths close?
At this point we are in something that resembles a bidding war. We go up, they go up.

I think our strategy for next week should be to lay low and just stay close enough. Then on the last day of voting, stuff the ballots. That way we catch the opponents off guard.

by UCngLA on Sep 14, 2007 7:21 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

What the hell? Down by 14.
I leave for dinner and come back and we are down by 14!

I am totally locked out of my computer.  I've cleared cookies and I'm about to toss my cookies. This has now taken over my life.

It's BN versus the entire state of Kentucky.  This is WAR.

by Barnes2JJ on Sep 14, 2007 9:00 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Attention UCLA students
It's 9:06 p.m. PST and the Western Kentuckians are all asleep.  This is the time to make up ground and blow by the Big Red Blob.

It's Friday night so don't even pretend you are going to bed anytime soon.

Vote, clear your cookies, and vote, vote, vote again.

Do it for your school.  Do it for America.

When I wake up tomorrow morning, I want Joe Bruin to be up by at least 200.  That is an order!

by Barnes2JJ on Sep 14, 2007 9:09 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

And back down by 50
Folks, I don't think this is a single-elimination tournament.  For the first time, I tried to read the rules today and it appears that each mascot stays in this contest for 14 (yes, 14) weeks, going head-to-head against each other mascot.

If that's the case, we will live to fight another day in that event The Thing wins.

by Barnes2JJ on Sep 15, 2007 5:34 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Up by 38
Don't ask me how or why (maybe all the increased traffic on BN), but Joe has retaken the lead.

Voting for him today, and seeing him in the lead, actually made me a little happy.

So sad that I have to take joy in a meaningless internet mascot contest when I should be enjoying the football season.

Oh well.
