At USC, OJ still a hero

USC's Trojans still don't get it.

So starts a great article at sbsun.com about how the USC Trojan's football team still adores this double-murdering, disgusting criminal. It does put our current situation with the football team in some perspective. I don't have too much commentary to add, but here are a few choice quotes from the article (a great read):

O.J. Simpson stands accused of 10 felonies in Las Vegas, including kidnapping, burglary and assault with a deadly weapon.

All this, 12 years after he beat a double-murder rap in an infamous trial and 10 years after a civil court found him liable for those two murders and ordered him to pay $33.5 million in damages. And one year after he tried to have a book published brazenly entitled, "If I Did It."

None of that matters at USC.

O.J. is still a great Trojan.

You can find proof of that in Heritage Hall, USC's glittering shrine to its athletes. Particularly its football greats.

Including O.J. Simpson.

Walk in the main entrance, you can't miss seven replicas of the Heisman Trophy arranged in an arc.

O.J.'s is second from the left.

Jerseys worn by USC's first five Heisman winners are mounted inside glass cases near the western entrance.

O.J.'s No. 32 is in the northwest corner.

How could these guys still have all that garbage still prominently displayed in their hall of fame?

Carroll did not seem comfortable when asked if Simpson should be treated on par in Heritage Hall with USC's other Heisman winners.

Perhaps it's because Carroll was heavily criticized for allowing Simpson to attend a USC practice before the 2003 Orange Bowl and knows when he might be about to touch the "third rail" of USC athletics.

"I think it's a statement of a time, back in the '60s, when accomplishments were made," Carroll said. "I don't know. I think it's something that is part of the past of this university.

"I don't think what's going on now has a lot to do with it."

Later, he suggested a writer ask some of the other Heisman winners how they felt about having O.J. in their midst.

So we did. One of them is Mike Garrett, USC's athletic director since 1993.

Garrett, who oversees the Heritage Hall collection, was asked if he could envision a time when one of its Heisman winner's trophy and jersey were removed from the room.

"Why?" he said.

Because that person was found guilty of a felony, perhaps?

"We honor people who came through here, in the time they played," Garrett said. "So what you're telling me is that ... if someone did something here and later in life, many years later, something happens ... that means you take it down?

"I mean, I don't know if anyone passes muster on that one because someone can always find something to find reasons to take somebody down."

Ugh... Nothing to add there.

But should he be treated with the same honor and visibility in Heritage Hall as six men who also won Heismans ... but who have yet to be brought up on felony charges? Particularly if he is found guilty of one or more of those charges?

One of those Heisman winners says O.J.'s trophy and jersey aren't going anywhere. That man is Garrett.

"I think some people have lived their lives early on, we honor what they did early on," he said. "What they do later has nothing to do with us and has everything to do with him."

Interesting concept. But not entirely accurate. If one of USC's heroes blew up the World Trade Center or assassinated a president, we doubt his jersey would be in Heritage Hall.

However, you're OK if you beat the criminal side of that double-murder charge and only the civil court nailed you ... and if you've only been accused of 10 felonies. You're good, so far, for glorification in Heritage Hall, the school's sports Holy of Holies.

USC's Trojans? Still don't get it. You wonder if they ever will.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

They Get It
They just know that to admit that this guy is what he is would be to surrender or lose, and they will never do that, because they are way too arrogant.  You see, being a member of the Trojan Family blah blah blah...........

I actually thought the article was kind of petty
I doubt the Goldman's or the Brown's think badly of usc because they still have OJ's heisman up, and frankly no one's opinion, including mine or this reporters should matter if its not shared by the real victims.

HOWEVER, if they do care then sc should get that trophey out of there.  If they don't then it's time to write an article like this.

GO BRUINS!!!

Oh yeah, and its a really slippery slope..
The NFL has him bronzed in the HOF, the Bills have some stuff up glorifying him, so it's just not as cut and dry as we would like, IMHO.

GO BRUINS!!!

Pretty simple answer
I would burn everything with his name on it, and then flush the ashes down the toilet.  That's not a slippery slope.

As much as I agree it seems
the NFL, the Bills and USC don't see it the same way.  Until someone from the families speak out its not an easy decision to make, IMHO.

Win. At. All. Costs.
They know exactly what they're doing. After a certain point, when your public image as an institution of higher learning is tarnished and damaged beyond repair, there's really no point in going back and pretending you care about morality. It's just one more 10 felony turd heaped on top of the pile of sh!t that is Southern Cal.

This just in . . .
BERLIN-German officials today announced a brand new museum in downtown Berlin to celebrate the "early" achievements of Adolf Hitler.  When asked about the appropriateness of such a facility, Chancellor Merkel said, "Why should we hesitate?  The museum celebrates Mr. Hitler's life during a time when he helped forge a groundswell of German Nationalism that serves as the foundation of our country even today. I don't think that business later in his life  should have anything to do with this. Two totally different things.  Besides, we really kicked some ass! During his early years, I mean."

Perfect!
This is exactly what Garrett and the others at justsc don't get.

Yeah they don't get it
You don't see us parading Phil Spector around the music school as a former student.

by joeb @ Bruins Nation on Sep 21, 2007 2:35 PM PDT reply actions

Really, I didn't know that
Still, I get a kick out of seeing him when he autographs some ketchup and mustard crap.  Also, some pictures of him in a Southern Cal shirt, toting a large firearm from 1979 were recently published.  He is easily the most despised American citizen in this country.

No wonder we spell it trOJan.

OH yea
When I heard about Phil Spector murdering that poor girl the first thing I did was throw my copy of "Let It Be" out the window.  We at UCLA don't condone or dismiss murder, and when one of our famous former students commits it, the first thing we do is try to erase that person from our memory.  I urge everyone here to chuck "Let It Be" in the trash can, along with any of Mr. Spector's top 10 records you may own.

by joeb @ Bruins Nation on Sep 23, 2007 12:24 AM PDT reply actions

Actually, I think several years ago
They released "Let It Be" without all the Spector add-ons.  I don't know how big of a Beatles fan you are, but Paul McCartney hated all the Spector add-ons.

"Let It Be... Naked"
was released in 2003. It takes a couple times listening to get used to the lack of production, especially on "The Long and Winding Road", but I have to agree with Paul, that the album is better w/o Spector's work.

by bruinhoo on Sep 23, 2007 1:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Still need to check it out
I maybe heard "The Long and Winding Road" though.

by bruinbabe2000 on Sep 23, 2007 3:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Yea i know
I have to get a non- Spector version.

by joeb @ Bruins Nation on Sep 23, 2007 10:08 AM PDT reply actions

Do you have to get rid of "Let it Be"
if you weren't aware that Phil Spector was a Bruin?  And is it significant if you were only vaguely aware of Phil Spector before he pulled an OJ, and then only because he had kind of a cool name, like a comic-book super-villain.  "Look out, Superman, I think the Spector has some Gold Kryptonite!"

I see another tiny difference between Dr. Skull, I mean Phil Spector and OK.  I don't think there is a one-to-one brand identification between Brainiac (I mean Phil) and UCLA quite like there is between the Slasher and justsc.

And I guess I haven't seen the photos of Spector being invited to the sidelines in the music department AFTER HE WAS FOUND TO HAVE KILLED TWO PEOPLE BY A JURY.  Sorry if I was screaming a bit there, joeb, but I think there is a world of difference.

As someone already pointed out, there are not a lot of exhibit in Germany pointing out that those early Hitler years really weren't that bad.  But OJ's exploits are still on display in the anals - or should that be annals - over at heritage hall.  Only a trOJan would invite that guy to hang out at games.  Or a humanitarian I suppose.

by Fox 71 on Sep 23, 2007 11:43 AM PDT up reply actions

Even before all this happened
The music department never made any mention of Phil Spector being a Bruin.  I took the history of rock n' roll class, and Phil Spector was mentioned for his contributions in the late 50s and early 60s.  No mention that he went to UCLA.  I only knew of him because of the Lennon-McCartney feud over Let it Be.

I understand what you are saying, and I certainly respect your actions, but it seems that UCLA made no promotion of Phil Spector as an alum before, and I don't think they are going to be making much promotion, no matter what happens.

Sorry you guys feel that way.
I just don't want to be a hypocrite by railing on the trojans for OJ, and still supporting a murderer that went to our school.  But hey, if you guys want to still own Spector merchandise, by all means do.  It just makes my angry that he went to school at UCLA, and I want nothing to do with him.

by joeb @ Bruins Nation on Sep 23, 2007 1:07 PM PDT reply actions

I agree with you there
The guy was a nutcase before this happened and I want our school to have nothing to do with him.  I'm just saying that our school hasn't seem to promote him before and won't in the future.

I did check his bio on Wikipedia, and there is no mention of him going to UCLA.

by bruinbabe2000 on Sep 23, 2007 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Spector merchandise
I'm pretty sure I don't have any, unless he worked on stuff for Mozart in addition to Lennon and McCartney.

by Fox 71 on Sep 23, 2007 6:23 PM PDT up reply actions

And I think you can relax
As far as I can see, no one has raised the Phil Spector stigma besides you.  In case it really starts to get to you, read the Jackie Robinson Story, then any book by or about Coach.  That should take all the feelings of OJ induced hypocrisy out of your system.

by Fox 71 on Sep 23, 2007 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Go ahead and make light of it
You can accept the murderer if you want to.  But I will not.  Spector tarnishes my Ucla.  You may not care, but I do.
