Open Letter to Dorrell's Supporters

This one is for you.

I know you read BN because you come on this site just often enough to tell everyone that you don't read this site.

You call us haters.  We are mean-spirited.  We aren't "true fans" because we "want" UCLA to lose.

We've been called racists, too.

Putting all that aside, as I see it, the world of UCLA football fans breaks down into two camps:  Those who think Dorrell should stay, and those who think he should go.  If you don't have an opinion on this subject, then this diary is not for you.

It is no secret that most of us on BN want Dorrell to go.  In fact, many of us want him to go now.

Those on the other side think Dorrell has done a good job, or a fair job, or think that he should be given more time to prove himself.

So, how does all this make us "haters"?  We don't hate Dorrell.  No one wishes him ill health or an injury or a shortened life.  Yes, the dialogue and commentary get heated.  But don't confuse that with "hate."

Those of us who believe he needs to go are not haters.   In fact, we love UCLA football.  We love UCLA football so much that we want the very best for our team.  After five years, we do not believe Dorrell is the very best for our team.  We believe we can do much, much better and that, to do better, we need a new coaching staff.

We want our team to compete for the National Championship.  We want our team to come out motivated to play hard every Saturday.  We want our team to play to its full potential.

Those of us who want Dorrell to go believe that this team is wildly inconsistent from week to week.  We believe the play-calling over the last five years has been pathetic, at best.  Wasting a down by running up the middle at least once on every series of plays is not what I would call intelligent or creative play-calling.  We believe we should be playing in major bowl games, against good teams, and not minor, unheard-of bowls, against mediocre teams (who usually beat us).

In short, we do not believe this coaching staff is, or ever will be, Ready for Prime Time.  They have had five years to prove themselves and they have not done so.  Dorrell's record speaks for itself.  We are content to let his record speak for itself.

There is no "hate" on this site.  We say what we say, and believe what we believe, because we want to give our team every opportunity to reach the hightest goals possible.  This coaching staff is the barrier which prevents the team from reach the highest goals available in college football.  Removing this barrier is not a "hateful" effort.  On the contrary, it is our way of giving our guys every opportunity to perform individually, and as a team, at their very best.

Don't confuse our love for this team, and our school, with our unhappiness with the coaching staff.

You don't have to love the coaches to be true fans of UCLA football.  In fact, we believe that clearing house of the staff is the very best thing possible for UCLA football and for the guys that put on the pads and give their all every Saturday.  We do what we do and say what we say for those guys.

That, to me, is love.
