A Lighter Note

As some of you may recall (well, maybe one or two of you), many, many months ago, I posted a diary about an experience I had at mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles (the HUGE church just east of downtown).  About one week prior to the Notre-Dame-Southern Cal game last year, Cardinal Mahony delivered the sermon and said that a mass would be held for Notre Dame, but not for SC because no one at SC had asked for one.

Well, I recently asked about a mass for UCLA prior to the UCLA-Notre Dame game.  I sent a letter directly to Cardinal M about this and about three days later I came home to a voicemail left by one of the church's Monsignors responding to my letter.  For those who do not know, a Monsignor in the Catholic Church is a pretty high position.

In short, the answer was "no."  In his message, the Monsignor (who said he went to Southern Cal), said that most of the church's officials (including himself and Mahony) will be occupied out of town on church business  at the time of the game due to an "idiotic" scheduling decision made by someone in charge of their schedule.  He also said that he expected that many of the priests at Notre Dame are going to be "quite disappointed" because a lot of them fly out for ND's games in Los Angeles and they like to attend a mass which makes reference to ND's games in L.A.

The Monsignor said that he would look into having someone else hold a mass, but he didn't sound optimistic.  He also said that he "hoped UCLA had a good season" and that we "beat Notre Dame" this year.

So, there you have it.  I tried, but it sounds like it's a no-go. Thanks go to the Monsignor, a Trojan, for getting back to me so quickly and for leaving a very long, and often hilarious message responding to my request.

It sounds like a lot of people in the church (both in L.A. and at Notre Dame) are football fans, too. The whole experience has been quite amusing to me.

Go Bruins!
