Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

Who has the best Football & Basketball coaching combo?

Wasn't all that long ago when we could have been considered to have one of the worst combos in the Pac 10 with Toledo & Lavin.  Now, with the hiring of Neuheisel, I think we are near the top.  Some random thoughts on the Pac 10 pairings:

Arizona:  Rates high with Olson, but very low with Stoops.

Arizona State:  With Sendek as their new hoops coach, coupled with Erickson in football, they are a strong contender for best coaching in the Pac.  Both coaches are bringing back teams that were horrible last year to being contenders this year.

Cal:  After this year, might have one of the most over-rated combos with Tedford's season imploding, largely because he stubbornly went with seriously dinged Longshore over the other QB that forgot the game clock when they were ranked #2. He still has to get some credit for even getting Cal football to be somewhere on the map. Braun to me has always been vastly over-rated.

Stanford:  Could be an up in comer in football with Harbaugh doing considerably better than the previous coach, but hoops is still well below the level set by Montgomery.

Oregon:  Belotti is a top tier football coach, but Kent is very inconsistent.

Oregon State:  Riley gets a lot out of his players but the hoop side is still a mess.

Washington:  In Willingham & Romar, another very over-rated duo.  Similar to Cal in that aspect.

Washington State:  Bennett I would put in the top three for hoop coaches, but hard to know how successful the new football guy will be.

USC: Without some of his previous outstanding support staff, Carroll's star has waned some, but he is still has to be considered the #1 guy on the football side (with Erickson as #2).  Floyd to me is a middle of the Pac guy at best on the hoop side.

Finally UCLA, with Howland we have the #1 hoop coach (I put him slightly ahead of Lute based on the most recent success he has had).

As for Neuheisel, it remains to be seen, but I think he definately has the potential to be one of the top 4 guys right out of the gate.

Nationwide...
You would have to go with Florida or Ohio State.

Texas too...
And Michigan doesn't look too bad with the former WVU guys, although neither have done anything yet in their current positions.

UNC may be knocking on that door too with Butch Davis and Roy Williams. Although Butch may bolt for a more dedicated football program if he can get UNC up near the top soon.

Kansas has to enter the debate, especially considering they have a coach that took them to the Orange bowl and another that keeps knocking on the Final Four.

But I have to say that I'm quite happy with the guys that we have, although we still need to see Neu on the field.

Also for a few months...
We had both Lavin AND Dorrell.

My votes nationwide
in order (with regards to what we've seen so far)
  1. Florida
  2. Ohio State
  3. Texas
  4. Arizona State (definate up and comer)
  5. Kansas (definate up and comer)
  6. UCLA (We have no reason to believe we won't be good in football)

Not sure about ASU bball
Sendek comes off to me as another Ben Braun, who will pick up a key recruit here and there and make a run, but won't put together a consistently good product. It's early in the season and ASU does have some good wins, but I'd like to see how he does in at least one Pac-10 season before giving him any accolades. Remember, he wasn't a very popular guy out in NC State. Here's an entry from his Wiki page:
In 10 years, Sendek's teams won no championships of any kind, and lost 3 ACC title games, this combined with weak out of conference scheduling at NCSU resulted in a split fan base and ultimately in Sendek leaving for ASU. Sendek was 8-38 against UNC and Duke with 4 of those wins coming against Matt Doherty. Sendek encouraged his teams to not "get up" for big games against rival schools. He stated, "No game is more important than the next game.

Definitely agree about the other schools on there, although I think we'll have a much better idea about our football program in a few years.

Pretty interesting diary 16
I think everyone knows here that I am excited about CRN and how much I love Howland. But personally I am going to wait another 3 to 4 years before assessing where we are wrt to the (very interesting) question you posed. I am optimistic to say the least.

What about a Trio or Quartet of coaches?
Football, Basketball, Baseball?

Quartet from UCLA's past: Prothro, Wooden, Jim Bush (T&F), and J.D. Morgan (the man not the building):

03/21/1964-Basketball-John Wooden
03/20/1965-Basketball-John Wooden
06/19/1965-Tennis-J.D. Morgan
01/01/1966-Rosebowl win over #1 MSU-T. Prothro
11/30/1966-Cheated out of Rose Bowl trip by Condoms-T. Prothro
05/22/1966-Track/Field-Jim Bush
03/25/1967-Basketball-John Wooden
03/23/1968-Basketball-John Wooden
03/21/1969-M.Basketball-John Wooden

Also, in June 1969, UCLA went to the CWS in Omaha. Arguably, a top eight finish in that sport.
