Rip Pulls Out of OC Running

According to this report, Rip Scherer has pulled out of the running for the OC gig:

Over the last 3-5 days, the Los Angeles Times has been reporting that Rip Scherer is one of three finalists for the offensive coordinator position at UCLA.

That is no longer the case, The OBR has learned, as sources from both the university and the Cleveland Browns have confirmed that the quarterback coach has removed himself from consideration for the position and will remain in Cleveland.

Along with Scherer, former Ravens assistant coach Jedd Fisch and former Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow had been mentioned as candidates for new head coach Rick Neuheisel's staff.  Chow was fired yesterday by the Titans, a development that, the UCLA source said, may have led to Scherer pulling his hat out of the ring.

I'm not sure what to make out of the part of Scherer pulling about because of Chow's candidacy.  The optimist in me would like to interpret that as a good sign that, as Wolfie reported earlier, things are in "advanced stages" at UCLA.

If not, and things don't work out with Chow, then we are apparently left with Jedd Fisch and Al Borges, who reportedly is still in the running.

GO BRUINS.

Jedd the Fisch?
When did he decide to give up KROQ and get into football coaching?

I do feel a little bad for these guys
its tough to have your name out there for a position for so long before a decision is made.

I really hope its Chow, but I don't think this tells us much of anything.

Interesting link and don't take it too seriously
Sounds like he was a strong candidate for the job based on the feedback on his role at Cleveland.  (Not surprising that RN knew who to look at within the NFL...nor is it surprising that he may have thought Chow might eventually be interested....he was in the NFL rumor mill afterall).

And as someone on this site said about Chow awhile ago, pulling one's name from consideration can change as events change.

Bill Rees connection?
Up until the 2007 season Bill Rees had been director of personnel for the Browns.  Rees was in charge of recruiting under TD for many years and was well respected as one of the best in the country.  He left the Browns to join the executive search firm that UCLA hired to find the new HC.  I wonder if Rees introduced Scherer as a potential candidate for the OC position?

Search firm still engaged?
Anyone know if the the search firm still working in the background to identify candidates, check on initial interest, compensation requirements, etc before RN talks to them?  Someone must be doing this because it seems like RN is real busy attending to recruits and the media.

I'll take either one
My first choice is Norm Chow, but I won't be upset if we end up with Al Borges either.  Our offense was pretty good with him in charge.  Remember Cade McNown?  He was pretty good...LOL!
