Walker Stays at UCLA

Bumped. -Menelaus

UCLA just put out a release stating that Walker is staying as defensive coordinator.

UCLA just released this - DeWayne Walker is staying as UCLA's defensive coordinator.

UCLA head football coach Rick Neuheisel is announcing that DeWayne Walker has agreed to be a part of Coach Neuheisel's first UCLA staff as defensive coordinator.

In addition, defensive line coach Todd Howard and linebackers coach Chuck Bullough will continue in their current positions.

Other staff decisions have yet to be made.

Linebackers coach Chuck Bullough is also staying, so I'm not quite sure what this means, if anything, for Norton.

Personally, I stand by what I said before.  If Walker has agreed to work under Neuheisel and isn't going to rock the boat, then this is good news.  First and foremost, the whole staff has to be on the same page.  And if this is an indication that these two are on the same page, then this is an excellent development.  Either way, the "I hate Walker" contingent, and the "I wanna have Walker's babies" contingent will need to learn to live with one another for a while.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

LA
I hope you don't mind, but I added some code and changed the title for the bump.

Also
I caught some of the conference call, but not the who thing.  It's family time in the M household, but hopeful someone will post the appropriate link to the 570 website when the podcast is available.  They should have both the call and an interview.

DW: "If coach wouldn't mind..
..I'd sign a 10-year deal."

RN: "So would I.."

It is good to hear that sound bite and the sentiments expressed. Walker does sound like he is on board and glad to have retained his associates. It is an extraordinary move, this conciliation, on Rick's part; but done for the greater good. The operative thought here is that this agreement -- like so many of the moves made when Neuheisel came back -- was done so seamlessly, so effortlessly.

And, over in he Kingdom or Soiled Condoms, the monarch, despite many returners, frets, the crown sitting uneasy on his head. Mark Saxon at the OC Register writes that Carroll may be approached by pro offers now that the NFL bloodletting has begun. He also mentions the possibility of Norton jumping ship:

But the Trojans also could lose coaches key to their success. Caroll expects Ken Norton Jr., who helped assemble and train one of the nation's best linebacking corps, to be approached about joinig Rick Neuheisel's staff at UCLA. Carroll said offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian got a call from the Baltimore Ravens about the offensive coordinator job Neuheisel vacated. That discussion ended when Baltimore fired Brian Billick.

..even so, I can see RN messing with Petey's mind by mentioning Sakrisian on his way out the door.

The though expressed many times on this site, if that UCLA is not only having the limelight thrown on itself with this hire, but the new coach himself is stealing some scenes from Pete Carroll and the Trojans.

..ain't life grand?

I Think KN Can Still Come Home...
Head coaches find ways/positions to get the guys they want on staff. I seem to remember that on Dorrell's first staff, we had a coach for ILBers and OLBers.

DeLoach coached safeties. He's likely gone.

So how about this...

Walker - DC and Cornerbacks (Same as 2007)
Howard - DL
Bullough - OLBers and Safeties
Norton - ILBers and ???? (Special Teams/Recruiting Coordinator)

If RN wants KN and KN wants to come to UCLA, they will find a way to make it work.

GO BRUINS!

The best part
is the RN evaluated them as individuals.  He said in the conference call thats linked above that he met with each individually to see where they were at.  Im glad that he is taking his time and not accepting them as a package deal

Nice to hear from DeWayne, himself
With his silence and his advocates' unflagging promotion over these weeks, the real person was starting to take on a mysterious, even sinister personna.

It was great to hear DW utter words like "we" and "championship" and "unfinished business" and "I'm just happy to be back a Bruin."

Go Bruins.

yep
They didn't bring back our secondaries coach (which was putrid anyways) so that'll be good.

And the good news is that at least where we were strong at in recent years, the line and linebackers, we're bringing them back individually and it looks like we are going to retool on offense.

Good
It does sound like RN is doing this the right way. Im happy for DW and the other defensive assistants that will be apart of our team.

DW is on board
Good.

Now it's time to GET TO WORK.
I hope DW will show us that he can stop the spread and develop some shutdown DBs.

Weather you like DW or not...
I feel this is actually good for RN's perception.  If DW had left for UW then the MSM would have started with RN losing his "#1 recruit" stories.  Now the spin is...RN wanted someone...and he got him.  Hopefully (and I feel it will be) the first of many things that RN gets when he wants them.

UCLA and Coach Neu have done a MASTERFUL PR job over the past week.

I can't believe we have to wait nine months for the first game...

RN is doing it right!
Bullough, Howard, and Walker were the only good things Dorrell had going. By keeping them, RN solidifies committments from recruits, he avoids having to rebuild a defense, and he ensures that the Dorrell/Walker faction does not overpower him. There are some good days ahead for UCLA football. The more I hear about Rick, the more I love him. Go Bruins!

I trust RN
and don't think for a second DW will rock the boat because if there was any sign he might, RN wouldn't have kept him. RN knows what it takes to be a head coach and a staff working as one is part of what it takes. I'm glad RN got it done and the fact that he beat out Washington and Texas (I'm not 100% sure I believed they were that interested) for DW shows he has what it takes to sell the program. He'll be beating out places like that and every other program for recruits in the near future too.

RN has been out of the game for 5 years and DW has made some good recruiting connections so RN will be introduced to these people and be able to maintain the relationships long after DW leaves. While I was never under the impression our recruiting would collapse without DW, you cannot ignore the fact that DW has done a good job in that area and will help. With DW's connections and RN's personality finishing the job, I can't wait to see the talent we bring in.

It will be interesting to see what DW does this season on defense considering the amount of talent leaving. He will have to be creative defensively to hide some of our weak spots and really emphasize the fundamentals because I feel our fundamentals (especially our footwork tackling) has been poor.

I think we need to remember DW only has 2 years of DC experience. He's going to keep learning and get better so I think we're only going to see our defense improve with the recruits we bring in and DW's growth. This is why DW wasn't ready to be a HC. He hasn't even mastered being a DC yet, but I'm excited to see him grow with RN's direction (Yes I'm saying "grow," but there's nothing wrong with growth if they actually are growing unlike we were under the previous regime).

Yes some of this I also said on the other thread, but this seems to be the main one for this topic.

More On the Job Training
"...DW only has 2 years of DC experience. ....He hasn't even mastered being a DC yet..."

And, that's why many of us did not want him to stay.

But, weeks ago, I put up a post that said if a new, experienced HC, wanted to keep DW that would be fine with me.

Much of DW's development will be determined by who we bring in to run the O and the O system we employ.

I wrote that Walker's development has been held back by practicing against an anemic O. His D could dominate in practices and still not be ready for real teams -- and that was not all his fault.

Although I would have preferred another choice, an experienced DC -- we've had enough learning on the job during the last 5 years -- I trust RN.

If RN wants Walker, I want Walker.
