We Are The Mighty Bruins

A little something from a blue and gold bleeding Bruin to welcome home Coach Neuheisel:

As one of the commenters on the original link suggested someone needs to get this guy on the next half time show.

I imagine the Solid Gold Sound will be playing a lot of that in the coming years because our offense will be scoring TDs instead of settling for FGs.

GO BRUINS.

OK - I confess
I learned "Sons of Westwood" and the alma mater and lots of other songs when I was a student, but that one sort of crept in when I was sitting in the Young Alumni section (a quality that I no longer enjoy, alas.)  My confession - I do not know the name or the words of that one.

Go ahead - say I'm less than a true Bruin.  Call me a Dorrelista.  Call me a yankee imperialist running dog stooge (my favorite).  But would someone fill in this missing piece of knowledge?

Thank you.

The Mighty Bruins
We are the Mighty Bruins,
The best team in the West.
We're marching on to victory,
To conquer all the rest.

We are the Mighty Bruins,
Triumphant evermore.
You can hear from far and near,
The Mighty Bruin roar!

Thanks, Rye
Some of the comments below about not knowing the songs make me a little sad, but once again I blame the mediocrity that infested Morgan Center.  Back in my day, we sang these songs all the time.  It wasn't a burden to learn them. We didn't have to learn them as part of any frat pledging requirement.  We knew them because it was fun singing them along with the solid gold sound of the band.

There is nothing quite as neat as when the band starts playing outside the stadium and marching in and all the fans are going crazy singing the fight songs.  It is truly sad that the current generation of students (or least a lot of them) don't know the joy of being a student and going crazy for a fun, understandable reason - to root for your team.  There has been so little to cheer about that I forgive all who don't know the songs.  But with Coach Neuheisel giving transfusions every minute or so, we will all have a reason to cheer our brains out.

And for you kids who don't know what that's like, all I can say is that you really have something to look forward to.  I just wish we had prevailed on the administration to push the button earlier.  But trust me on this - learn the school songs.  You won't regret the minimal time and effort involved.

Isn't the first line
"We are the Sons of Westwood The best team in the West..."

by tasser10 on Jan 10, 2008 8:08 AM PST up reply actions

I don't think so
not in "The Mighty Bruins" song. "Sons of Westwood" does though.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Jan 10, 2008 11:12 AM PST up reply actions

Same "Sons?"
The way I learned it was
"We are sons of Westwood,
and we hail the blue and gold.
True to thee our hearts will be
Our love will not grow cold.

Bruins roam the hills of Westwood.
By the blue Pacific shore.
And when we chance to see
A man from justsc
Every Bruin starts to roar

(Then an 8 clap.)

This was always my favorite.

Dude...
there is no reason that you are not a true bruin...I don't really know any of the other songs outside of this one. People question my love of UCLA, because I am a student at UC Riverside, but my heart belongs to UCLA. I like to tell them that if they cut me open, I'll bleed Blue and Gold.

Go Bruins!

by HE HATE ME on Jan 9, 2008 7:08 PM PST up reply actions

To be fair
bleeding blue and gold could refer to any UC university. In all seriousness though, just about everyone on here is a true bruins. Whether it be you or Fox or anyone, your love for the Bruins comes through clearly here on BN.

Fox71 memory
I learned "99 bottles of beer on the wall" while a student in good standing at UCLA. Does that count?

Or
Here's to brother<sister> (name), brother (name), brother (name). Here's to brother (name), who's with us tonight...

And I don't think I was in good standing when I took up that mantra that one quarter!

There was a contest for the song

In the mid-80's, there was a contest to write the lyrics for the new UCLA fight song (for UCLA alone, where we wouldn't be using a song shared with Cal).  Bill Conti wrote the tune to fit the lyrics.

A friend of mine was the co-winner of the contest (he submitted the "You can hear, from far and near, the Might Bruin roar")

Bob O. (Signholder #3)

That explains it.......
The guy next to me at the Cal game this year asked me why the Cal band played the UCLA Fight Song every time they scored. :)

As Paul Harvey says, "And now you know the rest of the story." :)

I may work with the Waves, but I'm still a Bruin!

Actually
we play Mighty Bruins for touchdowns and field goals (but yeah, its always more fun when we get the TD)

A classic Ukelele performance...
...although some of the notes were off.

Regarding lyrics:
Unfortunately, I think we are one of the few big- athletic-program schools where most of the fans don't know the words to our fight songs and Alma Mater.

At the 1993 Rose Bowl against Wisconsin, I was shocked to see (from the field) a sea of red in the stands and every one of them singing their Alma Mater in unison after the game. Then again, there's nothing else to do in Wisconsin.

Fight Songs
Even though I graduated from UCLA in 75 and attended all basketball and football games, I never learned the words to all the fight songs.  Wouldn't it be a nice tradition if they printed the words in the game programs and the band director would urge the crowd to sing along? It's funny, but I know the words to "On Wisconsin", "Hail to the Victors" (Michigan) and "Bow Down to Washington" because they were taught to me as a child.

Actually, the Bruin Den passes out flyers...
with words to the commonly sung songs. I'm so proud of the Den. They completely transformed the student section compared to when I was an undergrad in the early 90's.

When I was in the band, we always urged the crowd to sing along, but it was rather the fans that seemed apathetic. I blame Donahue football. But it is also the LA environment. In an SEC or Big Ten game, a lot of fans stick around after the game to sing the Alma Mater regardless of whether they win or lose. Most of our fans (as well as $c's at their games) choose to leave whether we win or lose. I don't mean this as a dig on Bruin fans at all. It's just a different culture.

by solidgoldsound on Jan 10, 2008 12:21 AM PST up reply actions

Back in the Old Days
The entire Bruin crowd stuck around to sing the Alma Mater -- win or lose.

It was an amazing thing to hear all those voices.

Pauley also tries to get people singing a little
I just noticed this tonight, but after the game, some of the new screens in the corners (over the on-court tunnels) put up the words to "Sons of Westwood" after the win. And I think I remember at least the words to "Rover" on the old screens that were there.

If I may interject my 2 cents...
Ooo! another band geek thread:

The best UCLA fight song is "By the old Pacific."  Its dated in a good way, plus unlike Sons is unique to UCLA.

I also think the UPenn fight song is better than "Mighty Bruins," which it replaced.

by BruinTechie on Jan 10, 2008 1:08 AM PST reply actions

Yeah
By the old Pacific's rolling waters
Loyally we stand each son and daughter
Hail the emblem of our alma mater
Might Bruin bear.

I don't hear that one any more.

then there's the fight song we can't get out of our heads - fight on, for justsc, you pay your fee, get your degree.

by Fox 71 on Jan 10, 2008 4:17 AM PST up reply actions

i learned it this way...
fight on, for just$c, cuz they payyyy the referee.

And line 2
and if you go, to just$c, it means you're not, as smart as me.

One of the only fond memories
of my experience at this year's SUC game was walking around the outside of the Coliseum and joining in when a passing group of Bruin fans started singing "The Mighty Bruins". My friend that I brought to the game (a big fan of college sports but an impartial observer at UCLA/$C) loved it. While I don't feel that you need to know all the songs to be a "true Bruin," I think it does bring you closer to your felow Bruins. Not quite a secret handshake since you can find the lyrics and music online but it's still cool when you're in enemy territory and you can join in songs and chants with a bunch of folks you've never met before.
