Sad Story: The Accident Behind UCLA Bench
This is a really scary story (if accurate). Many of us remember the fracas behind the UCLA bench right after the Austin injury. This post on eDucks.com claims to provide the scoop on what took place:
This is exactly what happened, as I am about 15-20 ft down/from the men involved in the accident behind the UCLA bench.
Two men, one younger maybe 20-22 and the older around 23-24, got into a scuffle over a seating arrangment in the front row on the 25 yard line. The bigger and older of the two, attacked the younger male, forcing them both to there feet.
As they scuffled and threw punches, the bigger of the two grabbed the other and proceeded to move toward the edge of the grass toward the drop off. They then toppled over and landed on the ground below, a 6-7 ft drop. The bigger male landed on top of the younger one, which landed on his neck/head.
My father, a nurse at Sacred Heart, ran over to help the younger guy. The bigger of the two was tackled and arrested immediatlely, but the younger male was unconcious and proceded to go into a seizure on the ground where he lay. His family and friends rushed the police officers trying to get to there family member and attack the other male involved. The police officers then let my father through and he then began processing what happened to the injured fan.
So far, all my dad knows is that the injured man went into a seizure and was non-responsive to any medical personnel there. He had a hematoma (a round ball of either blood or fluid) on the back of his neck. My dad says it did not look good, and seriously believes he may be paralyzed from the incident since he landed on his neck. He will get updates from the hospital later tonight, and I will update this thread with whatever he tells me.
My thoughts and prayers are with that young kid.
The question I have is whether the Autzen stadium has the same no alcohol policy that exists at the Rose Bowl? I am not sure here but my impression was that it was the policy for all NCAA venues, specifically the Pac-10 venues. But I could be off.
Still ... this is not the first time ... atmospherics around a UCLA/Oregon major sporting even took turn for the ugly (albeit this incident took place among Oregon fans). We all heard about what happened around the return of Kevin Love. There was some ugly stuff going around in the Oregon student section directed towards the Love family. I wonder what should the Oregon AD do to tamp down on this kind toxcity around college sporting events because what happened above is a really sad story.

About the no-alcohol policy
A friend and I are slowly working our way through all of the Pac-10 stadiums (one away game per year) and went to Autzen as part of this rotation. While there is no alcohol allowed inside Autzen, there’s a huge loophole there, as there is a building right next to the stadium (I believe it’s the indoor practice field) that sells alcohol during games, and people are allowed to go back and forth between the other building and Autzen. We took the opportunity to grab a beer and a hot dog during halftime without missing any of the game. So, while they can say that no alcohol is sold inside Autzen, they make it very easy to get more alcohol while the game is still going on.
As a side note, Oregon is not the only school that makes it possible to continue to legally drink during a game. Reser Stadium allows people to go in and out, and the Oregon State fans we met exited the stadium to go drink more alcohol in the parking lot during the game. I’m not sure how many other schools have a more lax alcohol policy than UCLA, but since the question was asked here, I thought I’d respond.
Hmm...
I can only hope for the best. If the kid was having a seizure, then it may be the motor tracts are still connected, since seizures originate in the brain. Therefore no paralysis? A lot of times losing consciousness will result in what looks like a seizure, even if it is not technically a seizure.
Anyhow… good luck to the kid.
awful
it’s such a stupid thing to fight over and even more stupid to let it get that far… i hope the kid is fine.

The injured fan was released from the hospital Monday night and is resting at home. No charges have been filed against either participant in the scuffle.
