Women's Soccer
The #3 Bruins opened up Pac 10 play this weekend with matches at Drake Stadium against the Washington schools. On Thursday the Bruins took down #25 Washington St., but not before the Cougarss gave the Bruins a real scare. UCLA was trailing 1-0 with only a minute left to play when Lauren Cheney scored off a Kristina Larsen cross to send the match to overtime, where Larsen picked up a goal of her own to give the Bruins a 2-1 win. The Wazzu goal did end the Bruins' record shutout streak at 10 games. On Sunday, the Bruins had a far easier time with Washington, taking down the Huskies 4-0. Larsen was a major factor yet again, finding net twice and assisting on another, giving her 3 goals and 2 assists for the weekend. The Bruins (11-0-2, 2-0-0) have now outscored opponents 32-2 this season and are the owners of a 44 match home win streak, the second longest in NCAA history. Pac 10 play continues this week as the Bruins head to the desert for matches versus the Arizona schools.
Men's Soccer
Just when you think the Bruins are ready to get hot and make a run, they manage to disappoint. The Bruins began the week on Thursday with a visit to #6 Cal and came away with a dramatic 3-2 victory. A Michael Stephen penalty kick in overtime gave the Bruins a huge win and seemed to get them back onto the right track, but that optimism lasted only two days as UCLA's five match unbeaten streak came to an end with a 2-1 loss to Stanford. The Bruins are now 3-4-5 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play with a visit from Washington and Oregon St. on tap for the week.
Women's Volleyball
Friday was a showdown of top 10 teams at Pauley Pavilion as #8 UCLA and #10 Washington squared off and the fans got their money's worth, although the blue and gold clad faithful went home disappointed. The Bruins and Huskies played a memorable five set match that the Huskies won with a 15-11 fifth set victory. The two teams traded blows all night the first three games were all decided by three points or less. After the tough loss Friday, the Bruins bounced back with a decisive sweep of Washington St. on Saturday, 25-22, 25-18, 25-14. The Bruins now sit at 12-4 overall and 2-3 in Pac 10 play as they ready for trips to Phoenix and Tucson this weekend.
Men's Water Polo
#2 UCLA hosted their first match of the year at the Sunset Rec. Center on Thursday and beat #6 Loyola Marymount 9-2, but that was only a warm up for the action at the SoCal Tournament Saturday and Sunday in Malibu. The tournament, which had the nation's top 11 teams in the draw, began with an easy 13-6 victory over Bucknell in the first round. The Bruins then took down #9 UC San Diego 12-9 in the 2nd round, but the wins would end there for the Bruins. A 7-4 semifinal loss to #3 Stanford knocked the Bruins out of the championship bracket and to the 3rd place game where they fell again, this time in overtime. The Bruins trailed 10-5 in their 3rd place game versus #5 Cal, but battled back, only to be defeated in overtime, 12-11. Conference play will continue on Saturday when the Bruins host Stanford at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center. Game time is 10 am so anyone heading out to the football game, get there early and take in the water polo game before the action starts on the gridiron. UCLA will also host Brown at the Sunset Rec. Center Sunday.
Men's Golf
The nation's top team was off for the week, but individuals took place in the Coast BMW College Classic, hosted by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Three freshmen teed off in a collegiate event for the first time and they fared well, especially Gregor Main who finished 2nd. Alex Kim also finished in the top 10, coming in 8th. The team will be off until the 27th when they head to Simi Valley for the Bill Callum Invitational.
Women's Golf
The #2 Bruins return to action this weekend in Palo Alto for the Stanford Intercollegiate on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Cross Country
Both the men and women head to the Hoosier State for the Pre-NCAA Invitational on Saturday.
Softball
No, the Bruins won't begin their quest for their 12th national title until February, but this Sunday is the softball program's alumni game and with the Bruins' illustrious history big names are sure to be all over Easton Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30.
Baseball
After Collegiate Baseball ranked UCLA's incoming recruiting class #6 in the nation, Baseball America chimed in with their rankings and UCLA checked in at #7. Most impressive is the high ranking despite bringing in only eight recruits while most programs had somewhere between 15 and 25.
Men's Volleyball
The men's volleyball team will take place in a fall tournament this year in preparation for theirseason this spring. They head north of the border where they will take on Pacific, the University of Calgary, British Columbia and another team TBD.

At this rate no
First of all, we need to get over .500, then we can worry about the tournament. They’re within striking distance of a tournament spot but are currently on the outside looking in.

I am assuming
That will be a huge underachievement and an embarrassment considering the talent normally present in a UCLA soccer team. Right?

It would be a massive disappointment
I heard some rumblings of a national title before the season, but I never bought into it. This isn’t a national championship caliber team because they’re a little thin on defense and the level of talent around the country is higher than in most years, but this team should easily qualify for the tournament. If we miss the tournament, I can’t imagine Salcedo being around next year if this team doesn’t make the tournament.

Yeah
That was my impression as well but good to hear that from some one following the situation more closely. I guess now the drama around this soccer team becomes whether they can make the tournament.
Another followup question assuming we didn’t have the talent to contend for the NC, we were expected to contend for our conference title. No?

Salcedo's team tend to start slow then get it together
I wouldn’t be surprised if this year is the same. Alot of the players who were suppose to step up this year and be star players haven’t been statistically speaking at least. It has me curious if it is coaching tactics or players. As I am too far away to catch a game, if jaffa, rye or anyone else who catches the games could give me their analysis I would appreciate it.

I've gotta add
“A little thin on defense” is one of the understatements of the year. They’ve been hit hard by injuries, but they should still be doing better than the 11 goals they’ve allowed in the last 5 games. At least they’ve also scored that many….

Ignore my moment of stupidity
“If we miss the tournament, I can’t imagine Salcedo being around next year if this team doesn’t make the tournament.”
You get what I meant.

Glass More than Half Full
The men’s soccer team is clearly a disappointment, but of the 4 teams listed which played last weekend as a team (not counting for this purpose the men’s golf individuals), 3 were in the top 10.
I don’t imagine that more than 1 or 2 other schools could make that kind of claim in any given week. I also don’t think we will have the same number of NCAA championships at the end of the school year that we had at the beginning.
Got to love the depth and breadth of our program.

Womens Soccer
The game against Wash St. was great. WSU scored easily on a defensive breakdown. We came back and pressed the whole game. We held about a 25 or 26 to 4 shot lead and had numerous close calls, including a couple of whiffs at point blank range.
