Ben Ball News & Notes

Some Ben Ball news and notes to pass on in case you missed it.  The Daily Bruin has a report based on first three practices. I liked the note the re. JH and ML going up against DC and JS:

FAB FIVE?: Howland said he liked what he saw from each of the freshman in practice: forward Drew Gordon, guards Jrue Holiday, Malcolm Lee and Jerime Anderson, and Morgan.

Morgan has received the most attention so far because he is expected to replace phenom Kevin Love and because the Bruins’ lack depth at the post positions. Gordon should see plenty of playing time at both forward and center for the same reasons, although Howland said Gordon has been dealing with a nagging knee injury.

Anderson did not play much this summer because of a groin injury, but he played for about an hour in each of the Bruins’ last practices and Howland was impressed.

Holiday and Lee had good days even though they were forced to cover Collison and Shipp.

"Jrue and Malcolm did a great job and competed real well," Howland said.

This year JH and ML are getting their first taste of Howland practices, next year it will be Reeves Nelson. Speaking of Nelson, he is right now is recovering from a minor surgery resulting from playing football. From Dohn:

My understanding is hoops commit Reeves Nelson's arthroscopic knee surgery went well, and less damage was found than initially feared. Nelson, a power forward from Modesto Christian, is expected to miss 6 to 8 weeks, and should be ready to play his senior season by Christmas.
Reeves hurt the knee playing football, and had surgery Friday at UCLA Medical Center.

Sounds like he will be all right.

Lastly, if you didn't know Tracy Murray will be back at Pauley this season as one of the color commentators for UCLA broadcast, tag teaming with his former team-mate Don MacLean:

Tracy Murray is returning to the UCLA family. He will serve as a fill-in analyst on the radio broadcast when Don MacLean is doing UCLA games on television or pulled away by his Clippers television responsibilities.

Hopefully Tracy's presence alone will magically improve our three point shooting this season (j/k).

GO BRUINS.

I would pay cash money

to see DC and JH go at each other in practice! Of course, Ben Ball is not about one-on-one so I’ll settle for seeing them harass opposing guards this season.
Congratulations to Tracy Murray! I ran into Tracy Murray on my walk into the Rose Bowl for the game against Fresno St. Someone had thrown a wayward football which I bent down to pick up at the exact same time as another fellow. When I looked up it was Tracy Murray. Immediately I blurted “TRACY MURRAY WHO AVERAGED 40 POINTS A GAME AT GLENDORA HIGH!” He said to me, “Hey this guy knows his stats!” He was very nice, very down to earth. A class act all the way.
