Women's Soccer

The #3 UCLA Bruins and #9 USC Trojans squared off on Friday night in a Pac 10 showdown before a Pac 10 record crowd of 7,804 at the Coliseum and the Bruins emerged victorious. Two goals by Kristina Larsen led the Bruins to a 2-1 victory as they remained undefeated on the season. UCLA struck first in the 27th minute when Larsen capitalized on a mistake by a Trojan defender to get in alone on the keeper and finish. The Trojans equalized only four minutes after the half, scoring only the third goal against the Bruins the season. In the 61st minute Larsen notched her second off a corner kick and the Bruins held on to move their record to 14-0-2 and 5-0 in Pac 10 play. Tele put together some great highlights from the game that you can check out here. Things do not get any easier for the Bruins this week as they play host to #2 Stanford on Friday at Drake Stadium at 5 pm.

Men's Soccer

Raise your hand if you thought after the Bruins' 2-3-4 run in non-conference play, they would lead the Pac 10 with only three matches to go. Okay, everyone with their hand up is lying. After a start that seemed destined to deliver the Bruins their second consecutive disappointing season, the Bruins have found their game and are atop the Pac 10. On Friday the Bruins headed to Seattle to play Washington, who was hot on their heels in the conference standings. After 90 minutes and goals from Maxwell Griffin and Fernando Monge, the Bruins had themselves 2-0 win and a nice cushion in the Pac 10. Then on Sunday the Bruins beat Oregon St. 1-0 in Corvallis behind a 14th minute goal by Brad Rusin. Next up for UCLA (7-4-5, 5-1-1) is a home match versus Cal, the second place team in the Pac 10. The match will kick off at 7:30 on Friday and should the Bruins win, it would only take a win or draw in one of their final two conference matches or a draw or loss by Cal for the Bruins to clinch the conference crown.

Women's Volleyball

It was a tough weekend for the #10 Bruins as visits from the Bay Area schools delivered them two losses. First, UCLA dropped a five set heartbreaker to #4 Cal, 28-30, 25-22, 21-25, 25-21, 13-15. Then on Sunday UCLA took the first set, but dropped the next three as they lost to #5 Stanford. The Bruins (14-6, 4-5) continue their four game homestand on Friday and Saturday as the Oregon schools come to town.

Men's Water Polo

The #4 Bruins bounced back from a shellacking at the hands of #2 Stanford last weekend with two impressive wins this weekend. On Saturday the Bruins defeated #3 Cal 11-10 in Berkeley behind four goals by Ben Hohl. On Sunday, Scott Davidson tied a career high with five goals and the Bruins took down #17 Pacific 14-2 in Stockton. The Bruins (11-4, 3-1) are now in third place in the MPSF, behind #1 USC and #2 Stanford with a trip to USC on tap for Saturday.

Swimming and Diving

The #16 Bruins opened their season on Saturday as San Diego visited for a meet at the Sunset Rec. Center. The Bruins defeated the overmatched Toreros 195-95 and will compete in the Trojans Invitational this weekend.

Women's Basketball

The Nikki Caldwell era begins on Sunday as the Bruins host Love and Basketball to start the exhibition season.

Men's Golf

The #13 Bruins began play in the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational on Sunday and are tied for 9th place, 12 shots back of the leader after the first round. Meanwhile, Beau Schoolcraft is competing in the Ball Cullum Invitational.

Women's Golf

The top ranked Bruins will head to Orlando on Sunday to compete in the Collegiate Match Play Championships.

Cross Country

Both the men and women will compete in their most important meet to date on Friday when they compete in the Pac 10 Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Women's Rowing

The Bruins will compete in the Head of the Marina on Saturday and the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival on Sunday.

Yup

First round of the NCAA tournament is Nov 14, almost assuredly with the Bruins hosting.

Seems ridiculously early for the men too.

The men's tournament starts a week after the women

Two weeks later if your team gets a first round bye. The tournament has always been around the same time and finishes up the first or second weekend of December. They like to have the season wrapped up before finals prior to winter break.

Ya

IIRC last year was the week/weekend of hell. Lost to $UC in the College Cup, lost to $UC in football and then lost to Texas on sunday

soccer doubleheader

I successfully avoided math during my 4 years on campus, but if I did this correctly, it sounds like the soccer teams are having a doubleheader at Drake this Friday. I live out of the area and can’t make the games, but it would be great if there was a good crowd for the Bruins. #3 v #2 at 5, followed by a game between #1 and #2 in the conference. Sweet. A sweep would be fantastic.

Go Bruins.

Soccer rankings are in

The women are still #3 and Stanford is still #2 as they get ready to square off Friday (Notre Dame is #1).

The men are back in the polls at #23 and Cal is ranked as high as #8.

Out here at Drake Stadium

our #3 women’s soccer team and #2 Stanford are scoreless roughly half way through the 1st half.

GOAL!!!!!!!! UCLA!!!!!!!

DiMartino strikes from distance to put the Bruins ahead 1-0. I believe Wilmoth picked up the assist, but don’t quote me on that one.

The Bruins now have to hold on for 13 more minutes.

#3 UCLA- 1, #2 Stanford- 0, FINAL

The Bruins get a big win over Stanford and take a 1 game lead in the Pac 10. A win over Cal on Sunday combined with a Stanford loss to USC and the Bruins clinch the conference title.

On a goal like that, "assist" is a little too much credit

Not intending to take downplay Wilmoth, but that was quite a shot. More of an individual goal, if you ask me.

The game finishes a scoreless draw

The Bruins now have 17 points with 2 matches left, while Cal has 9 points with 4 matches left. The Bruins hold the tiebreaker by virtue of their win in Berkeley earlier this year.

I can't honestly say I'm disappointed

Cal should have scored several times in that game, and it’s combination of some good goalkeeping and really fantastic luck that they didn’t. We missed some good chances ourselves, but we didn’t hit the woodwork twice and we didn’t repeatedly shoot into defenders who can’t have known much about the shots they blocked.

That said, there’s still two really big things that annoy me about this team (and the first bugged me last year too). One, they fiddle on the ball way too much, especially deep in the area. It gives the other team time to set up, and the ball only rarely seems to end up in a better position. Just shoot it – allow luck to happen. And two, there doesn’t seem to be very much flow between attack and defense. So often, we would go forward and there’d be a maximum of 5 guys anywhere near the ball, making it difficult to score when there are 6 or 7 defending (ie, all the time). I can see being wary as Cal’s dangerous on counter attacks, but it was really frustrating to see all the times we got the ball into a halfway decent position, only for the man on the ball to have virtually no support or options.
