Non-Revenue Sports Bruin Review and Calendar

Bumped. Thanks again to Rye for keeping us plugged into the whole world of UCLA athletics. GO BRUINS. -N

Women's Soccer

The #3 Bruins polished off non-conference play this weekend with a pair of home wins. First came a 1-0 win over Pepperdine where Lauren Cheney found net in the 5th minute and the Bruins held on to win. Then came a 3-0 thrashing of 19th ranked San Diego that moved the Bruins to 9-0-2 on the season, extended their nation's best home win streak to 42 and extended their shutout streak to 10 games. With non-conference play done UCLA will begin their conference schedule this week when they host the Washington schools on Friday and Sunday.

Men's Soccer

The men's team also played two games this weekend and extended their unbeaten streak to four. Their only problem is not one of those four has been a win. UCLA came away with two draws this week, a 2-2 draw versus #22 UCSB and a 3-3 draw versus San Diego St. in their conference opener. The Bruins (2-3-5, 0-0-1) will have to pick up their play this week if they want results versus #10 Cal and a tough Stanford squad.

Women's Volleyball

The #8 women's volleyball team went north this weekend to play the Oregon schools and came away with a respectable, but somewhat disappointing split. On Thursday the Bruins dropped a tough four set match to #11 Oregon, but they were able to bounce back and pick up a tough five set win over Oregon St. on Saturday. The schedule does not ease up for the Bruins (11-3, 1-2) as they continue play in the always tough Pac 10 with home matches versus #10 Washington and Washington St. this weekend.

Men's Water Polo

Another Bruin team kicked off conference play this week as the #2 men's water polo took on #7 Long Beach St. in their MPSF opener. The Bruins took an early lead and never gave it up on Saturday as they disposed of the 49ers 10-4 at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center. Eight different Bruins scored, Scott Davidson picked up a hat trick and Chay Lapin made 15 saves in a total team effort as the Bruins improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Bruins host their first match of the year at the Sunset Rec. Center this Thursday when #6 Loyola Marymount visits, then they will take place in the SoCal Invitational, hosted by Pepperdine. The Bruins will play Bucknell in the first round and the winner of the #7 Long Beach St.-#10 UC San Diego match in the 2nd round. 16 teams are in the tournament's field, including the nation's top 11 teams.

Cross Country

The men's team took place in the Bill Dellinger Invitational in Oregon this weekend and came away with a respectable fourth place finish. Drew Shackleton led the Bruins with a 17th place finish as the Bruins raced without one of their top runners, Alex Crabill. Neither the men nor the women will run again in competition until the Pre-NCAA Invitational on the 18th.

Men's Golf

The nation's top team heads back onto the course today as they begin the Cal Poly Intercollegiate at Monarch Dunes Golf Club.

Women's Rowing

The women's rowing season begins this weekend with the Marina Challenge in Marina Del Rey.

That Cal game will be tough

After seeing them against Maryland in Drake earlier this year, I wouldn’t give us too much of a chance to get anything out of that game. They have a very solid defense and take advantage of their chances they get on the other end. Pretty much the opposite of the way our team has been going of late.

The 3 goals against San Diego are a pretty good sign for the women’s team after their (relative) problems in the last couple games. They really should have scored more against Pepperdine (they hit the post twice and had one cleared off the line), and didn’t put any in against Santa Clara last week. Hopefully that little rough patch has passed.

This Info is Great- Question re Water Polo

Thanks Rye. This info is excellent.

Does anybody know if men’s water polo championship is still 4 teams only, while women’s championship is now 8 teams? Any reason for the disparity?

With 4 teams, the Bruins need to win either the MPSC tourney or regular season- no room for error. 3rd best in conference = 3rd best in country = no trip to championship round. Any sense from people at Saturday’s match whether the Bruins really are 6 goals better than the 7th best team in the country (which would be great)

men's soccer beats cal

ucla won 3-2 on PK in overtime over 5th ranked (per Cal website) cal in berkeley. looks from box score like bruins played a man down for last 13 minutes of regulation and for overtime. sweet.

Wow, that's great

Woulda been a crap game to go to though… how anticlimactic is a golden goal on a penalty kick?
