Center Court: Ben Ball (Michigan) Open Thread
Michigan Wolverines at UCLA Bruins, Nov 20, 2008 6:40 PM PST
Let’s get it on.
How big is this UCLA-Michigan matchup tonight in NYC? Well it’s big enough that our friends from MGoBlog and Maize n Brew took note of it in midst of their Holy (tOSU) week.
As discussed all week, the Wolverines under their second year head coach John Beilein will be fired up to take on our Ben Ball warriors tonight. So here to JS, MR, AA2 and rest of their team-mates bringing their A game on DEFENSE:

For our notes on Michigan Wolverines please go here, here, and here. The tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 pm PST. It will be on ESPN2. You can also track it on our official site.
As always if you are watching the game, share your instant thoughts/commentary here in our game thread.
Fire away.
GO BRUINS.

Hello from MSG/NYC
Hey fellow Bruin fans,
Finally getting that rare chance to watch my Bruins live here in New York City. Just watching the Duke-SIU game and can’t decide whether I want Duke to win or lose. What do you all think? BTW, mobile posting from an iPhone seems to work. :)
Go Bruins!
I'm rooting for Duke
I’ve never hated Duke like a lot of other people seem to and I’d rather us get the tougher test (and RPI boost) should we win.
by Ryan Rosenblatt on Nov 20, 2008 5:32 PM PST up reply actions
Hmmmm
As a College Basketball fan, I’m rooting for SIU. As a UCLA fan however, I’m rooting for Duke.

I hate Duke
Always have, always will. Something about them just doesn’t sit right with me, maybe the way they feel like they’re entitled to a top ten ranking every year

As we get closer to tip can you let us know how many UCLA fans are there? I’m curious what kind of turnout we’ll have in NY.

great...I just realized I have
math tutoring half an hour into the game, at least I’ll have my blackberry

O.A.
Watching the Pistons-Celtics right now
AA saw a lot of playing time last night against the Cavs with a very tough assignment: LeBron. Doug Collins reports that he did quite well, and his +/- of +12 (highest on the team) does back this up.
SC has a lot of athletes
but they’re not quite sure where to go and how to work together yet. It looks like chaos at times out there for them. You can see their potential, but also how far away they are from being a really strong team. They’re going to be interesting to watch as the year goes on.

Not at all
and how did they manage to take a 5 point lead into half despite turning the ball over 17 times?
by Ryan Rosenblatt on Nov 20, 2008 5:49 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah
I have been channel surfing a bit. Seems like every time I was watching, the Salukis were taking it straight to the rack without facing any defense.
Duke doesn't have anyone in the middle
If they think Zoubeck (sp?) is going to be their force in the middle, they’re going to be in trouble.

I have class from 6:30-9:30 tonight. Ah the life of a UCLA student :(
Hopefully, I’ll be let out early so I can catch the end.
When I was in school
Basketball took priorities. I had couple of those 6:30-9:30 classes too. IIRC they were history discussion sections. I left in the middle off those classes few times because I told the professor flat out … had to go to Pauley.
Preach it brother
I feel the same thing.

Hey ryebreadz,

Getting excited seeing the Bruins warming up
Seems like a decent Bruin fan turnout so far.. Several hundred probably
Go Bruins!

UCLA cheerleaders in the house!
Too bad I forgot my camera and the iPhone camera sucks.
Go Bruins!
remember guys, this season is all about development
More than half of our starters have never been regular starters before. And we depend a lot on freshmen for significant bench players.
Tonight could be a “schooling” in the wrong direction.

Me Too
Young team. Road game. Against a D we’ve had trouble with before.
Let’s be realistic. We can win this game and until it’s over, I’ll believe that. But, we can lose it, too — and frankly, it will have no impact either way.
I want to come out of all this pre-season stuff with some chemistry amongst those who will play all year and NO injuries. Wins and losses are secondary to both in my mind.

I like that Keefe is playing with confidence
That 3 was no hesitation. Asserting himself down low for position on rebounds.
2nd to, this is what we were afraid of
2 straight turnovers as we execute badly against their zone. Is school now in session?
last 30 seconds
Have not been good for the Bruins. I think they got a bit overconfident during the timeout

But I really like the way we’re rebounding right now.
The difference is athletic ability is clear
If we can hold onto the ball and stay out of foul trouble we should be okay.

We need to tighten up our offense a bit
DC has looked a little undecisive too … plus Beilein is mixing it up between 1—3—1 and man-to-man defense.
to, 18-12
Jerime continues to have problems at pg, can’t make a pass.
I worry that JA’s confidence is starting to suffer. We might be asking too much, too soon from him.
This will be a big issue long term for resting Darren.
Don't think so
I think JA is slotted for 4-7 mins this year.
RW didn’t get more than 9 mins his first year. I wouldn’t reach conclusions after watching few mins of our first nationally televised game.
Maybe, maybe not
Jrue Holliday is more of a PG than SG – if JA doesn’t come along then wouldn’t Coach Howland shift Holliday to our backup PG?

Just getting ready for it early on
and enjoying him this season (same mindset I had for KL last year).
I love DC
but SHOOT THE BALL. He’s shot over 50% from 3 in back to back years yet he passes up open shots. I understand that he wants to initiate the offense, but we need him to score more this year. if he gets the open shot, he needs to take it.
by Ryan Rosenblatt on Nov 20, 2008 7:20 PM PST reply actions
I've never understood
Why a guy who can shoot like he can takes so few 3s. I would think it would make the rest of his decisions easier when they have to respect his shot.
This is what I was exactly referring to in my preseason post
He sometimes get a little too unselfish/indecisive.
Quick release
I wish DC had a quicker release, that will allow him to take more shots and not worry about them getting blocked. Even with his awkward release, it is very accurate.
by UCLA Championships Made Here on Nov 20, 2008 7:35 PM PST up reply actions
Name of game? Turnovers
We are outshooting them and out rebounding them. TO’s are the reason it’s close.
sjh
Michigan doesn't have any big guys of note
and they like to move side to side. Morgan isn’t in great shape yet and would struggle in this type of game.
by Ryan Rosenblatt on Nov 20, 2008 7:22 PM PST up reply actions
tightening up as expected
as competition gets better, it’s tougher for the frosh like JA, Drew and Malcolm. But Jrue seems to be very comfortable with this game.
Don’t see as much comfort in Josh or Darren yet.
I’d say Alfred has been pretty solid.
Last year
we attacked the zone with some lobs because their was only 1 guy on the back line; it helped that we had Love, Mata, and LRMAM. It looks like our guards are trying to do too much today, hence the turnovers.

Turnovers are the difference.
That’s probably to be expected with so many young players. Don’t find who has the turnovers in the box score I’m looking at. Anyone know?
sjh
Warts and all ...
No inside presence.
Lots of freshmen playing and making mistakes.
Not much from Alfred, Josh or Roll.
Darren has made several bad plays.
- James has played with energy and purpose
- Jrue is unbelievable; his first block on Harris set the tone for that match-up, has the guy even scored yet? Then his second block in the paint showed really quick ups!
Go Bruins!
Not much from MR?
You must be watching a different game. He has 4 rebounds and has been very active.
Agree re DC, AA2 and JS.
yup, forgot those rebounds! Good work, Mike!
But in the offensive sets, he had as much trouble as everyone making the right pass at the right time. Guess that’s what made the impression on me. It must be really tough to work against a really good zone!
Also, DC is too hesitant to fire his 3pt shot. He passed up several open looks.
not sure if anyone's mentioned this
but Texas Tech scored 167 points tonight. It was against some ridiculously bad school, but 167 points? That’s just absurd. I thought only their football team was high scoring lol
I don't know if you're aware of this
but he shot that one from behind the NBA three.

bad play by srs to start half
josh gets nailed for j right in his face

we’ve given them an opening. Now they have some confidence which is scary. We need to come out of the timeout strong.
